Until recently, if you were reading this, you might assume that it was written by a human. Following the announcement that ChatGPT4 will soon be incorporated into upcoming versions of Microsoft 365, that certainty has evaporated. It’s an age of innocence that we might come to miss. Taking artificial intelligence from a fantasy future to everyday use has the potential to benefit humanity exponentially. It could reduce costs, counter financial fraud and help businesses make better and more productive decisions. Some speculate that it could double the rate of global economic growth by 2035. When used well, that is.

Like any other human invention, ChatGPT can be used for good or evil...and will be used for both. I do R&D in artificial intelligence. ChatGPT is but one of numerous AI platforms (ChatGPT, GPT4, Bard, etc.), much like the numerous search engines that preceded it (Google, Yahoo, etc.). Its results will depend primarily on two things: what its programmers told it to do and not do, and the nature of the source material it ingested. So there is where the issue of trust centers...who or what organization programmed it, and what information sources are the basis for its answers. My advice is find out BOTH of those factors before you trust the answers you get. "Trust but verify," as a wise former President suggested.

The essence of this problem is contained in the statement of Elon Musk in an interview with Tucker Carlson. "Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk revealed in an interview with Tucker Carlson that Google co-founder Larry Page once told him he hoped to build an AI super-intelligence that Musk described as a “digital god." Whatever you think about the Bible I strongly encourage you to investigate the statement in the New Testament, "Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." The Bible foretells the time of a totalitarian world government to come that is in direct opposition to God. Much to be said of this, but any hope of escape is contained in the Scripture above. Very sincerely.

simply build fool proof suicide switches into the computers power supply. At the first sign of insanity shut it down and don't restart it. It's a tool. If the idiots build Frankenstein's monster than storm their castles and burn them to the ground along with their monsters. Works in the books and movies.

AI is marketing hype, mostly a scam with some clever, in-depth programming pretending to be "intelligent". It is not. It cannot do the simplest real tasks. Note that they are not pushing the self driving cars any more....they CANNOT be made to function safely in a general roadway situation. But they ARE pushing them on us in aircraft cockpits and a good number of airline crashes are due to excessive automation in the cockpit and the automation fooling the piots, or the pilots in several cases being literally unable to do the very basics so flying that were taught to 5 hour student pilots 30 years ago, and even today to student pilots in simple private aircraft. Too much "automatic" or "AI" gets accidents and problems outside of narrow, carefully scripted conditions. Program a robot to weld, and give it the same work pieces every time, oriented correctly and clamped correcly by a human, and it can make great weld after great weld. It cannot pick up a pile of parts, alighn them and clamp them and weld them. The hardest thing is for a robotic system to look into a bin of 100 identical parts and identify one, in a jumbled, random orientation and pick it up. AI is a scam.

“The U.S. lost track of 1,475 immigrant children last year. Here’s why people are outraged now.” That was a Washington Post headline from May 2018, one of many such pronouncements in nearly every mainstream news outlet – all decrying these missing children as evidence of the “cruelty” and “inhumanity” of President Donald Trump’s border security policies. “It’s just wrong. It’s wrong,” Joe Biden said at one point. “Cruelty is the point. It’s their only point.” But under President Biden’s allegedly more humane border security policies, the federal government has lost track of 85,000 children who crossed the border unaccompanied by their

Americans expecting a better economy to emerge three years after the COVID shutdowns will no doubt be disappointed by the first quarter’s GDP gain of just 1.1% with higher inflation. And it’s even worse than it looks. Of course, President Joe Biden denied the worsening news, saying, “Today, we learned that the American economy remains strong, as it transitions to steady and stable growth.” “Strong”? Really? No one believes that. As recently as late March, economists were looking for a first-quarter GDP growth number exceeding 3%. Instead, they got 1.1%, down from 2.6% in the fourth quarter and 3.2% in last year’s third quarter. See the trend?

In one of the most memorable presidential debate moments, Ronald Reagan asked voters if they were better off in 1980 than they were when Jimmy Carter was elected in 1976. The obvious answer was, for most, a resounding “no.” Whoever runs against the Democratic nominee next year needs to bring back that question, because it’s a certainty that in the fall of 2024, we’ll still be worse off than we were in pre-pandemic 2020. And for that, we can thank, or rather blame, Joe Biden. In a poll taken earlier this year, 41% of Americans said they were financially worse off

Now that Joe Biden has announced his plans to run for reelection, the question that must be weighing on the minds of Democratic Party officials is “Can he possibly win without COVID?” They must know that without the pandemic, Biden had no chance of defeating Donald Trump in 2020. When he announced his candidacy exactly four years ago, the economy was booming and optimism was rising. Trump’s approval rating was edging upward. The only reason he had for running, he said, was because Trump

It’s been said we live in one of the most divisive and bitterly antagonistic political eras in our nation’s history. That’s certainly true for some of the public debates over tough issues we face today. But data from the latest I&I/TIPP Poll show there’s one policy issue about which both major parties have near total agreement: school choice. Fed up with substandard public schools and feeling trapped, Democrat and Republican voters heartily support greater school choice by more than 2-to-1, according to April’s online I&I/TIPP Poll. The survey, taken March 29-31 from a national sample of 1,365 adults, has a margin

Saturday will mark the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day, one full spin of the globe in which we are expected to celebrate the modern environmental movement. Yet that great cause, if we may paraphrase Eric Hoffer, became a business, then degenerated into a racket that not only became a haven for grifters but also a platform for scolds and eco-religion zealots. We strongly suggest that rather than spend a day exalting the inanimate Gaia, the West should mark it with recognition of how far human progress has brought us. Closely related to Earth Day is Earth Hour,

Vermont’s self-described socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders is a nonstop cheerleader for a minimum-wage hike. Recently, in Britain’s Guardian newspaper, he once again called for a huge increase in the minimum wage. Sounds generous, until you realize it would in fact hurt most the working poor, those who supposedly would reap the greatest benefits of a boosted minimum wage. “Whether they are greeting us at Walmart, serving us hamburgers at McDonald’s, providing childcare for our kids or waiting on our table at a diner in rural America, there are too many Americans trying to survive and raise families on $9, $10 or $12 an hour,” Sanders wrote.

Is the country separating itself into two distinct camps? One increasingly leftist and the other trying desperately to cling to traditional American values? Census data seem to show that it very well could be underway. Last week, we commented on recent population data showing that people have been fleeing urban areas, noting that these are mostly Democratically controlled, and we’ve pointed out that people have also been moving from red states to blue. But we wanted to go deeper and get more precise numbers. So, we matched Census net migration data from mid-2020 through mid-2022 for all the nation’s 3,000-plus

Every time the cranks in Congress and the kooks on campus talk of the grand premiums of socialism, they always explain that it’s the benevolent and neighborly democratic socialism of Scandinavia that they want the U.S. to follow. If that’s true, then why is the U.S. becoming like East Germany of the miserable 1960s? The United States since the New Deal has not been that far different than the Norways, Swedens and Denmarks of the post-World War II era. All have employed welfare-state policies that were fed by the prosperity of capitalism, the balance between the two adjusted from time to time, especially in the Europe and nations

New Census data show that, from 2021 to 2022, more than 2 million people moved out of urban areas that are largely controlled by Democrats and relocated to exurbs and more rural areas that largely voted for Donald Trump. Los Angeles County, for example, had a net ex-migration of more than 363,000

President Joe Biden is dispatching 1,500 soldiers to the Southern border to stem the surge of illegal immigrants that are expected to follow next Thursday’s expiration of Title 42, a pandemic-era public-health measure that allows Border Patrol to immediately expel illegal immigrants. The active-duty Army units will assist Border Patrol and will be armed, though they will only be permitted to use their weapons in self-defense. Following a request by the DHS, the Department of Defense agreed to “provide a temporary increase of an additional 1,500 military personnel, for 90 days, to supplement CBP efforts at the border,” an unnamed US official said in a statement provided to CNN.

Four years ago, Jill Biden was hesitant about her husband making a White House run, fearing the toll it could take on him and the family. In the months before Joe Biden formally announced he’d make a reelection bid, she had no such reservations. Privately, the first lady encouraged her husband to run again while giving him the space he needed to process the decision in the way he traditionally does: with extensive deliberations, consideration of the burden it would place on his family, and a bit of classic Biden hemming and hawing. She was involved in all the high-level discussions around the decision, giving counsel when she felt it was necessary.

Researchers led by the glaciologist Evgeny Podolskiy have found that the chorus of crashing and splintering noises in the high-altitude glaciers is a result of sharp drops in temperature after dark that causes ice to crack. The team pinpointed the cause of the sounds in 2018 after spending more than a week trekking through the Nepalese Himalayas to test the seismic activity of the Trakarding-Trambau Glacier system there.
