After Tuesday's arraignment of former President Trump, Republicans rushed to defend him against the political persecution of Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg. However, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and his top allies stayed silent.
McConnell, who reportedly hasn't spoken to Trump since December 2020, refrained from making any statement responding to Trump pleading not guilty to 34 felony counts.
In fact, the Republican has not said anything regarding the indictment of Trump overall.
"If we issue a statement, we will let everyone know," is all McConnell's top spokesman, David Popp, said following the arraignment.

Department public information officer Ryan Wilbur said three Marines heard a struggle between three other males and explained how they intervened.
“On April 1st at approximately 1:41 p.m. Deputy E.E. Donkor responded to a disturbance at Chick-fil-a, located at 25 Dunn Drive,” he said. “Witnesses advised one male was approached by two others. The three got into a brief argument before a physical altercation ensued.”
Wilbur said one of the two males pulled a knife on the victim.

RedState’s Nick Arama has had Alvin Bragg’s number for quite some time, predicting that the 34-count indictment would amount to charge stacking and that there could be nothing a serious lawyer would put their name to in it (and she’s written a new analysis now that we have the actual indictment, here).
I wrote earlier that once we saw the indictment we knew why Alvin Bragg wanted it to be sealed as long as possible, and that according to one reporter who was in the courtroom Trump’s attorneys laughed when they read it. Trump’s attorney Joseph Tacopino seemed to confirm this with an answer during a press conference after the indictment:

Donald Trump’s arraignment in a Manhattan court on Tuesday was carried out with the minimum amount of fanfare — considering that this was a historic first grand jury indictment of a former president.
However, the court proceedings in the wake of ostensible felony leaks to the press about the sealed indictment did produce a curiosity: How was radical activist Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg able to elevate charges that are misdemeanors past the statute of limitations and stack them into 34 felony charges, when the facts of the case did not show there was a cover up a more serious crime?

Thursday evening the “news” was released smack in the middle of the afternoon drive news cycle.
For maximum effect the disgraced Manhattan’s DA office confirmed the former President Donald J. Trump would be facing an arraignment on charges stemming from a new “hot off the presses” indictment.
Already likely the worst kept secret in Manhattan for the better part of the last two months, this move gave the media, rivals and opponents to the former President, and most significantly the current administration,a moment to clink their glasses and raise a toast to the fact that they had finally “gotten him.”

My introduction to San Francisco came in the late 1970s, when I spent a lot of time there as a young lawyer. For a Midwestern guy, the San Francisco of that era was a revelation: great restaurants, famous hotels on Nob Hill, fog drifting in off the Bay. But today’s San Francisco is, sadly, something else.
The San Francisco Chronicle has a long, long article about the city’s demise: “Downtown S.F. on the brink: It’s worse than it looks.” And it looks really bad. The numbers are grim:

They are weak and, most important, political.
As such, they are shockingly-blatant punishment for Trump daring to become president. In this sordid case, the letters D.A. stand for Democrat Attorney.
The charges are the crime.
