A mental health advocate has launched a furious defense for the 6'6" boy, 17, who attacked and knocked a teaching aide unconscious after she took his Nintendo Switch away from him.
Sue Urban - whose 17-year-old son Nicholas graduated from Matanzas High School before taking his own life - has responded to the incident where a 17-year-old special needs student, who weighs 270 pounds, attacked his teaching aide on Tuesday.
Neither the student nor the teaching aide's names have been released publicly.
'This is not this child's fault. He is not a threat,' Urban said in an emotionally Facebook Live. 'This is a mental health issue.

Inclusion has ruined the public school system.
Everything now revolves around the lowest common denominator.
Normal kids are getting the short end of the stick now.

If he can't control himself he most certainly is a threat. Do we have to wait until he kills someone before institutionalizing him?

And that in a nutshell is EXACTLY the problem. Raised without discipline and not learning that behavior carries both consequences and when appropriate, punishment, young men remain incorrigible children and we all suffer at their hands.

Ok. So who’s fault is it? I’m going to guess that it’s the fault of the total failure of the public education system in this country that cannot access risk, cannot manage to provide safety to teachers or students, and who are far more invested in catering to woke liberal philosophies than caring about education.

FTA: “most times these children do not understand the consequences of the behavior.”
This makes them a certain threat! I don’t have a doubt that the school system may have failed him…along with his family. But that certainly doesn’t relieve him of any responsibility.
He’s a threat to society, period!

Sue Urban's quotes: "most times these children do not understand the consequences of the behavior." and "he did not know he was doing wrong.
The animal's quote to the police: "I don't want to go to jail."
He obviously understood the consequences of his behavior. Throw the book at him, until he no longer poses a threat to society.

IF he should now be sent to a mental health facility rather than a Jail?
He should have been in a mental health facility instead of a school.
I'm also a tad bit leery of the massive size of that facility/special needs school...separate from the normal school. Vast areas, a dozen workers, few students in the video, am assuming a budget that matches.
Maybe the young man can be sent to a farm where he can tend rabbits, though they might want to keep Curly's wife away from him.

That kid was no gentle giant. As the police escorted him out of the building he yelled, I’m going to kill you, to the victim. Most special needs kids would be crying. This looked more like possibly a low IQ kid with learning disabilities along with some major anger issues. Pair that with his size, and common sense tells you, he is a possible threat to others.
Decades ago there was a movement to integrate special needs kids into public schools. Parents were actively pursuing policies that would make it mandatory for their children to be mainstreamed in the classroom. They did not want them in classes geared for whatever special needs they had. They started bringing them into the class with personal aids. Most of the time it was successful, but not always. Clearly, some were not safe to have in class. There are horror stories that teachers could tell you that would shock you, but the system insisted they remain in class being disruptive and sometimes violent. School authorities fear lawsuits more than they want to protect their staff and students.
Of course, we want to be compassionate to special needs children but we have to balance that with the safety of those around them. A 6’6”, 270 lb. special needs “child” is a threat because they may get frustrated and angry and become a threat to everyone around them because of their sheer size. Most men could not handle a student that large.
If you have watched the video of the attack and seen the response of the man casually walking toward the attack, seeing that the woman is being viciously pummeled, it will turn your stomach. The student would have killed her and you could see that every adult that approached the situation was afraid of him.
However, this psychologist is off base. Of course, he most likely had poor impulse control, probably no impulse control, and they, no doubt knew it, but they were willing to risk other children and staff because the school authorities were afraid to deny him access because of the lawsuit that would be filed.
It is never good policy if innocent children and staff are put at risk because of any unruly child, special needs or not. Parents are not willing to withstand the verbal abuse they will receive if they advocate for their child when another child is put in their class with potential mental issues without the proper protection needed for the rest of the class. Clearly, it is financially impossible. To send a woman to be an aid to anyone of his size is irresponsible. Therefore the best course of action is to pull them out of the public school. I shutter to imagine what would have happened if this kid had gotten angry with a child. Compassion must always be tempered with safety of others in mind. If not, you will have more of these incidents and it could very well end in the death of an innocent child or staff member. Sadly, the only way to get the attention of school authorities is to sue the school. I hope this aid does so. Maybe the school officials will think twice about putting their staff and children at risk because they refuse to stand up and say no to what everyone could see was a potential risk.

This is the very problem that all the major democrat cities are seeing today. People with significant mental health issues living on the street endangering other people. NYC has them living and killing in the subway. This young adult does not belong in this school. He belongs in a facility that can has a controlled environment for young adults with behavior issues that could kill someone.

One of my nephews started down this path after high school. He got into drugs and simply took what he wanted, often from family members. He simply did not connect the dots between actions and consequences. After multiple incidents, including an arrest, him mom went down the tough love path and told him he was on his own. After three months of working to feed himself, walking to work, having no money to spend after expenses, and no family members to talk to, he finally figured it out.

The "threat" is the idiot woman who says this monster is not a threat.
He should be institutionalized in a place where his impulses can be properly contained.
That is decidedly NOT a school with normal kids in attendance.
The overused metaphor "time bomb" is appropriate in this context.
And while you're at it, put that silly woman in a safe place too.

Not to say that this 6 foot something "child" should not have "help" at a place that can either help or care for him, but somehow along the line the victims of these assaults have been forgotten....our country is being run for the felons, the vicious, those with mental issues, and not for the rest of us, the vast majority. Mainstreaming the mentally disabled into public school classrooms makes those who support it feel good but they are dead wrong about the reality of the situations they have created. There is no way the teacher's aides didn't know this kid was a ticking time bomb, but they are helpless to protect themselves from misguided policies like mainstreaming.

I wrote in another post the other day when this video emerged that nothing will happen to him. He is protected with extraconstitutional rights not available to regular students. See, he's special needs, has an ironclad Individual Education Plan with all kinds of get-out-of-jail-free stipulations. I guarantee he has terrorized staff and students for years. Nothing is done because the LAW protects him. He special.
Every public school has at least one of these kids, male and female, that absolutely destroy the learning environment such as it is. These are the kids that on their 18th birthday enter the system and are eventually incarcerated and/or homeless.
Run, don't walk, to the nearest sane learning alternative. Your children are the only thing you leave on the earth that matters. They reflect your values, your wisdom, and your dreams.

The perpetrator here who is obviously devoid of any sense of self-restraint is not any sort of child. I know that for sure. When I was 17 years old I bailed out of a broken and poor family situation and never even thought of punching out a school teacher. After that, still at the age of 17 I was in the Army infantry “humping the Yamas” along the DMZ in Korea for over a year carrying an over 20 lb Browning automatic rifle (BAR), ammunition, and other needed equipment, at that time nobody called me a child or a kid. Following that I also spent the entire year of 1968 on the ground in Vietnam during the time that over 15,000 US military members were killed in combat there, with additional hundreds of thousands wounded there. Nobody ever called me a kid there either. I was also on Guam when the liberal Democrats who started the Vietnam War in the first place, pulled the plug on Vietnam and bugged out of that country. I watched as hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese adult and child refugees passed through on their way to the USA. I still don’t know why we were in Vietnam in the first place! Recently about the same happened during the Biden called Afghanistan bug out. The USA should return to reality as a 17 years old male who is 6 foot 6 inches who weighs 270 lbs who who violently attacks a woman is not a kid in the real world.

Another delusional moron. Put it mildly, the woman is a freakin jerk. No, it wasn't that kid's fault, he's just another special needs student who can lash out against anyone who triggers his violent inner self. No different than a violent pit bull who is great while in its cage, but, as soon as it gets loose, he tries to kill anything near it. Sad part is, this kid, all 6'6" and 270 pounds of him will eventually kill someone, but it will not be his fault, it's your fault. t's never their fault. Sounds like he has a mental health issue that makes him not suitable for that school/facility. He probably needs to be in a mental institution. And from what they describe he may need to be there for the rest of his life. I have a relative that has spent his life in an institution. It was recognized that he needed to be there by the time he was 5 years old. And it is where he needs to be. We take him out for rare family visits but we have to be careful because he can become an uncontrollable danger in an instant.
This thing of putting mental health cases into everyday life where there cannot be professionals to care for them needs to end. It is not compassionate to take the mentally ill out of institutions and let them live on the streets in filth. I fully believe that if he had killed the teacher there would still be people saying he needed to stay in that school and not in a mental institution. Bring back mental institutions and involuntary committal.

At 17 and 6' 6" this 'child' not only is still growing but due to his large size and weight is stronger than most adults let alone a woman who is twice as small as him. He could've killed her and in his diminished capacity plus inability to control his rage impulses probably believes he's not at fault. I'm sorry to inform the leftist mental health apologists but he's totally at fault and needs to be dealt with according before he does kill someone.

Sorry, but it IS his fault. HE is the one who kicked and punched someone much smaller than himself. If he had that little self control and no sense of right and wrong, he should have been in a mental institution instead of a public high school.
