Bar staff beware! Biden's IRS proposes
crackdown on TIPS by making servers report

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) proposed a new rule this week that would crack down on taxing the service industry's tips.  The Service Industry Tip Compliance Agreement (SITCA) proposal would be a voluntary program between the IRS and employers that the IRS says would 'decrease taxpayer and IRS administrative burdens and provide more transparency and certainty to taxpayers.'  The proposal is now open to public comment until May 7.  The program would monitor employer compliance based on actual annual tip revenue and charge tip data from an employer's point-of-sale

A nightmare for the employers in an additional cost which of course will be passed on to the consumer. Remember…businesses DO NOT pay taxes, they collect them. The costs of running a business are a part of the price of their product or service.

Tip of the pun intended. They are going after the gig economy. Your Hispanic lawn guy, your handyman who works for himself. Your barber you pay in cash. The guy you pay to clean your gutters or anybody working for himself and self reporting his income if he even files a tax return. I am not defending these tax dodgers but it’s why I support a sales tax and no income tax. You get everybody that way. The drug dealer buying a Cadillac Escalade and anybody who buys anything. The problem is that the Dems might want that but keep the income tax. A 20% sales tax will soon be 25%, then 30% etc, etc.

It's a disgrace. In NYS, if a waiter/waitress is audited, the audit ASSUMES he/she makes an 'average' amount of tips based on hours worked. That is a major SCAM. Each person does not make an 'average'. It depends where they work, when they work, (time of day, days or nights, season, etc.), and if they asked to do other jobs as well as wait on customers ( bus the tables, help in the kitchen, and so forth ). These are facts.

I've never worked in the food and drink industry but I was under the belief that the IRS automatically demands 15% of the wages of these people, forcing them to file, even if it's cash. Can anybody confirm? The strategy is to go after the low wage earners because they can't afford lawyers or tax accountants.

@23, when we owned a restaurant, we had to collect taxes based on the hours worked at actual minimum wage which was higher than the required wage to pay tipped employees. Often times, their actual net pay would equate to about $1-2 per hour after taxes, so it was obviously all about the cash for the good ones. The onus was on the employee to declare tips that exceeded that amount but in 35 years in the service industry I never heard from a bartender or server that the IRS ever pressed the matter.

Outlaw tipping, and have the service industry starting pay at minimum wage of 7.25 instead of $2.13. Otherwise, leave these wage earners alone, and just get the VAT going, and do away with income tax.

#25, I agree with you on the VAT but I’ll tell you what happens when servers are paid minimum wage…in Australia, you don’t generally tip because the server is paid a minimum of $25 per hour. Your “tip” is figured into the cost of the food and the prices are ridiculous. On a visit there in 2014, I ordered fish and chips which in the US would have cost around $18. The price there was $35.

Given that most tips come in the form of cash, I don't see how they can monitor that without some pretty severe intrusion on the employer. They won't be satisfied with just the card style payment for long.

"Both our nations' strong democracies have been tested of late -- very much tested -- and our institutions are put in jeopardy," Biden said. A document with classified markings was removed from former Vice President Mike Pence's Indiana home Friday during a search by the FBI, according to Pence spokesman Devin O'Malley. Six "additional pages without such markings that were not discovered in the initial review by the vice president's counsel" were also removed, O'Malley said. Pence is currently on the West Coast with his family after the birth of two grandchildren, according to his spokesperson. The FBI is also expected to search Pence's office in Washington, DC, in the coming days, sources told CNN.
