NEW YORK — As the day approaches, a number of New York lawmakers have pushed the state to recognize Lunar New Year as a public holiday. Assemblymember William Colton introduced a bill on the subject in the 2021-2022 legislative session. He and Assemblymember Grace Lee, who was elected in November of 2022, have pushed for the calendar change. Colton plans to reintroduce his bill in the next legislative session. He’s said declaring Lunar New Year as a public holiday will promote increased awareness of both Asian history and tradition. “This bill is personal to me as an Asian American and

There's already been 2 holidays this month and now they want another. How long before Ground Hog's Day and Obama Day are paid days off too?

You know, this might not be a bad idea. More holidays mean less time for government bureaucrats to muck stuff up. And I'm all for making those holidays on Monday. That means a lot of them will take off Friday and possibly the following Tuesday and make a long weekend of it. As they used to say, no one's life, liberty or property are safe when the legislature is in session.

In many countries and some states Easter is an official holiday. I love it because it irritates atheists. January 1, Lunar New Year, Chinese New Year, etc are ridiculous. Nowhere on the Earth's orbit does it say start here. Some companies give you the standard holidays and your birthday. The only holiday I object to is Labor Day which isn't connected to anything important.

Yea, that's it, just add in another holiday. There's a reason our kids are uneducated. They're never in school. About 20 holidays along with 2 months off for summer recess, a week for Thanksgiving, a week between Christmas and New Years, a week for teachers convention and a week for spring break. Then you can always count on a week or two for a teachers strike because they are so overworked. Pathetic..

I, for one, welcome our new Chinese overlords. Snarky Simpsons references aside, it's fine to increase awareness of Asian history and culture. But not to adopt it in place of our own, nor to blend it with ours, unless that's part of a return to the "melting pot" vision of immigration.

U.S. customs officials are cracking down on egg smugglers. With egg prices soaring in the U.S. over the last year, more Americans are crossing into Mexico to buy the food item and trying to sneak cartons of raw eggs along some areas of the southern border, including California and Texas. "We are seeing an increase in people attempting to cross eggs from Juarez to El Paso because they are significantly less expensive in Mexico than the U.S.," U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Roger Maier told CBS MoneyWatch. "This is also occurring with added frequency at other Southwest border locations."

Democratic leaders in major cities nationwide have already moved forward with bans on natural gas stoves even as the Biden administration has pumped the brakes on similar regulations at the federal level. Cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and New York City — which are collectively home to more than 10 million Americans — have enacted varying restrictions on natural gas hookups impacting gas-powered furnaces, ovens and stoves. Leaders of the Democrat-led cities have argued that transitioning away from natural gas would help achieve climate and net-zero ambitions. "New York City is proof that it’s possible to

Shoppers across the nation have been scrambling for months to keep up with soaring egg prices. Prices continue to skyrocket – up 60% in December from a year earlier. Last year, the average price for a dozen large Grade A eggs in the U.S. was $1.93 in January. By December, when egg demand peaked, the price surged to $4.25. The high prices prompted a "He went to Kroger" meme, with an egg in place of an engagement ring in the "He went to Jared" jewelry advertisement. Here's when we can expect egg prices to drop and what we can do in

Behind the five-decade low US unemployment rate of 3.5% lies a 2.6 million-person mystery. That’s roughly how many more Americans should be working or looking for jobs if the economy’s labor force participation rate was the same as before the Covid-19 pandemic. But something’s still off, leaving everyone from mom-and-pop businesses to Federal Reserve economists scrambling to answer a crucial question: Where are these workers? Economist Raj Chetty and his big-data experts at Harvard University’s Opportunity Insights lab went looking for these missing people. Their research relies on an innovative method of tracking the economy, built in the early months

San Francisco’s reparations committee has proposed paying each Black longtime resident $5 million and granting total debt forgiveness due to the decades of "systematic repression" faced by the local Black community. The San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee, which advises the city on developing a plan for reparations for Black residents, released its draft report last month to address reparations – not for slavery, since California was not technically a slave state, but "to address the public policies explicitly created to subjugate Black people in San Francisco by upholding and expanding the intent and legacy of chattel slavery."

Other spaces such as countertops also tested positive for lower levels of the drug and will require specialized cleaning, he said. The larger-scale remediation work will include removing tainted surfaces, walls, ductwork and exhaust fan equipment. The city

So Joe Biden is finally, officially in trouble for something. While many in the media are eager to point out that Biden’s classified document scandal isn’t as bad in some ways as Trump’s classified document scandal, some realists have admitted that they’re similar enough that there’s probably not a lot to be gained here.
