Dear GOP Establishment: It’s You, Not

In what may be the most misleading narrative not originating with a leftist source about House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s recent trials National Review Editor-in-Chief Rich Lowry argues the Republicans’ “Fight Reveals the Party of Self-Loathing.” Although this diatribe may please some of Lowry’s sponsors, it bears no connection to what went on in the House last week. The fact that the GOP revealed disunity does not in any way prove that “it is a party that to some significant extent loathes itself.”

Rich Lowry, besides being a jerk, is an openly UniParty supporter. The concessions that the Freedom Caucus obtained from McCarthy through 14 ballot challenges were a restoration of the House rules before Evil Pelosi changes them to make herself the dictator. At least 3 days to read bills? How novel! Allowing a single Representative initiate a vote to vacate the Speaker chair, as it was pre-Pelosi, rather than a Majority of the House to initiate the vote? How extreme! It was like that pre-Pelosi. And the rule change about requiring an annual budget (as required by law) and PAYGO policy is just common sense. There is no guarantee that the rule changes will be adopted by the House, but just that McCarthy will try to bring things back to "normal order."

I have not claimed to be a Republican for over a decade, I am, rather, a Constitutionalist. I loathe all those, in both parties, who ignore the Constitution and stand only for reelection.

The media implies that the democrats love each other because they all voted like birds on a wire under the wicked hammer of gasbag Pelosi. The one guy who defied them did it to save the principal industry in West Virginia and they nailed him to the wall the first chance they had. This kind of "loyalty" was enjoyed by Adolph Hitler and many dictators around the world today. At least the republicans can have different opinions and not be crucified for it - yet.

Last week, Pope Benedict XVI was laid to rest. The world media were forced to cover the event, barely containing the vitriol they always had for the man. Why was such a kindly and humble scholar always the subject of such scorn? Most of it, I think, was that worldly commentators so hated his predecessor, but St. John Paul II's charisma simply washed over everyone, like a tidal wave. So they took it out on his successor. There is also a lot of academic jealousy by insiders.

The gleaming promise of new technology and its uses blinded us to the insidious extent imperiled elitists would go to protect their unmerited power, wealth, and status. We were naïve. Yet, even if one could have foreseen the metastasizing tyranny brought about by the digital age, it would have strained credulity to watch Americans—especially the young—not merely acquiescing to it, but embracing it. Though we are now inured to its novelty, it bears recollecting that from the late 20th century to the present, we have lived through a worldwide communications revolution. Profoundly affecting the individual and society, the full impact of this revolution remains unclear.

Dozens of prominent conservatives, including a former attorney general for the Reagan administration, released a letter Wednesday in support of the 20 House Republicans standing between Rep. Kevin McCarthy and his bid for the speakership. “Months ago, these members made clear that this established way of doing things was no longer acceptable,” the Conservative Action Project letter said. “Rather than engage them in a good faith negotiation, Rep. Kevin McCarthy has instead maligned both the requests and the messengers. He has publicly and through proxies leveled attacks against members of his own party, including threatening to deny committee assignments for those who continue to oppose him.”

The United States Army took a serious hit to recruitment last year, something they’re trying to come back from by expanding a program to prepare out-of-shape applicants for basic training. As the world stares down Russian and Chinese aggression, military preparedness is at the forefront of the country’s mind. Unfortunately, 2022 saw the Army fail to meet its 60,000 soldier enlistment goal by a shocking 15,000. In an effort to bolster its numbers, top brass announced the expansion of the Future Soldier Preparatory Course, a boot camp for out-of-shape recruits who want to meet the fitness requirements maintained by the military.

I was thinking yesterday that we haven’t heard much about this recently. Today the Wall Street Journal reports there has been some progress in narrowing down the list of suspects but still no definitive conclusion. A day after the draft opinion was published last year by Politico, Chief Justice John Roberts assigned the Supreme Court’s marshal, Gail Curley, to investigate the leak. The court has released no information regarding the investigation since then. Little has emerged elsewhere, apart from a demand from investigators in June that justices’ law clerks sit for interviews and surrender their cellphones, prompting several of the three-dozen clerks serving in May

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the U.S. will hit its debt limit on January 19, at which point the Treasury Department will take “extraordinary measures” to avoid default. She called on Congress to raise the debt ceiling as soon as possible, with the government on track to max out on its $31.4 trillion borrowing authority next week. Without intervention, the government could be left unable to pay its bills by June. “It is unlikely that cash and extraordinary measures will be exhausted before early June,” she wrote in a letter to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) Extraordinary measures include delaying some payments, including contributions to federal employees’ retirement plans, to free

In one of their final acts in power, House Democrats secretly passed through a rule change that will see lawmakers in the lower chamber get a $34,000 pay raise.  The new rule, proposed by Democrats on the House Administration Committee, allows House members to be reimbursed for the cost of lodging, food and travel while on official business in Washington DC. It was tucked into the House's internal rules, rather than in annual spending bills, and therefore was not debated on the House floor, according to the New York Times.

A third batch of classified documents was found at President Biden's residence in Wilmington, Delaware, the president's attorneys announced Saturday. Special counsel to the president Richard Sauber disclosed in a statement that five additional pages of documents with classified markings were found at Biden's home Thursday evening, making a total of six classified documents retrieved from there. Sauber explained that when Biden's personal attorneys identified one classified document at Biden's home on Wednesday, they "immediately" stopped searching for additional documents because they lacked the security clearances necessary to view those materials.
