Amazon unveiled its new ‘Sparrow’ sorting robot that could soon replace some human workers in its warehouses. The robot is designed to identify and sort specific products along Amazon’s fulfillment line, a task that previously could only be done by humans. “Sparrow is the first robotic system in our warehouses that can detect, select, and handle individual products in our inventory,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement alongside the product’s debut during Amazon’s Delivering The Future conference near Boston on Thursday. Warehouse workers fear the robots will make them obsolete, with one telling Insider that Sparrow “will take my job.”(Snip) the company plans to roll it nationwide as soon as next year.

Having had a career in the automation field but knowing little about Amazon, i'll say this, sometimes the increased efficiency of automation in one area of an operation creates jobs in another area.

Even "unskilled" workers have got to eat. Not everyone can be a computer genius, or even mentally keep up with the ins and outs of inflation and $5 or $10 gasoline. But go ahead and be snarky about it. Bread lines may well be in the near future for a lot more Americans.

Part of the reason companies are going to robots is that they are having a hard time finding people willing to work. In Japan, companies are turning to robots for that reason as a result of lower birthrates and a shrinking population. I don't know whether that is the reason in the USA, but I know we are having a hard time finding workers. I heard recently on the radio that working age men in the 20s and 30s are increasingly turning to casual work (i.e., temporary and/or part-time), couch surfing in friends' living rooms, etc. These trends aren't good for people. People need to work. It gives us dignity. Enough of the video games, dammit!

I don't suppose any governors who gave Amazon tax breaks to build warehouses in their state required the company to employ a minimum number of people along with the caveat that should those employees be replaced by robots, the tax breaks are rescinded.
