Power Line's Lexicon of Leftist Locutions

I’ve been promising to collect our own lexicon of the real meaning of key leftist terms—an undated version of Ambrose Bierce’s Devil’s Dictionary, for a while now. So here goes. Readers are encouraged to propose additional definitions and terms in the comment thread, and we’ll update this lexicon from time to time. Populism: When the wrong person or cause wins a free election, like Brexit, Trump, or a Soros DA recall. Racism: Any opposition to the agenda of the left. Democracy: Any institutional design or voting system that enables the left to get what it wants. Threat to democracy: When Republicans win an election. Equality: Outmoded idea from the Declaration of Independence.

Equality = Special privilege for groups deemed fashionable and helpful to the leftist cause. Racism = Failure to implement the privileges required to meet the definition of "Equally ".

Nice idea. Except the Left tends to say whatever they think will get affirmation, claiming they were misunderstood if what they say has the opposite effect. They manipulate the language whenever it suits them, so any dictionary is (at best) a snapshot of something that is constantly in flux.

Calling the fattest category of people 'morbidly' obese is offensive, woke researchers said today. And they urged doctors and scientists to stop referring to unsuccessful attempts to lose weight as 'failures'. Terms used moving forward should include 'ineffective' or 'insufficient' weight loss, or even 'secondary weight regain'. No specific suggestions were given to replace the phrase 'morbid', however severe is often used instead. Critics today slammed the recommendation, published in a leading obesity journal, saying it was 'odd' given morbid obesity is a clinical term. But industry experts agreed that 'less stigmatising' language was crucial in the battle against the bulge, saying 'words truly do matter'. Joe Nadglowski, president of the Obesity Action Coalition, said:

It is no surprise that Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) dislikes President Donald Trump. After all, no man has done more to denigrate the Iraq/Afghan War strategy that her father crusaded for than Trump. He not only opposed Cheney’s approach to war, but he also mocked it mercilessly. As the former Vice President’s oldest daughter, with her own dose of less charm and less savvy, Liz Cheney has now entered on her own crusade. She stands athwart the House floor denouncing Trump, all his pomps, and all his evil works. Instead of Holy Water, she will sprinkle the tears of fellow Republican failure Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) on the TV cameras.

Of all the crazy policies we see implemented around us, from decriminalizing theft to teaching children to change their “gender,” perhaps the craziest is government’s determination to force us to drive electric vehicles. EVs like the Tesla are perfectly fine cars, or would be if they weren’t subsidized or mandated. But they are terrible for the environment, and the conditions under which their materials are mined raise serious ethical questions. Ronald Stein makes excellent points in his column titled “Is it ethical to purchase a lithium battery powered EV?” "The lower image is just one lithium supply mine where entire mountains are

In April, a black nationalist terrorist named Frank James opened fire on the downtown N subway train in Manhattan. While the racist gunman had a large stockpile of weapons, he happened to use a Glock pistol that he had bought over ten years ago. Now Glock is being sued. James bought the gun in Columbus, Ohio in 2011. So he quite clearly didn’t purchase it, intending to shoot up a New York City subway train. Nevertheless the lawsuit blames the gunmaker for having "contributed to creating and maintaining a public nuisance in the State of New York" even though the gun wasn't even sold in New York.

Of all the shortages that I have reported in recently, a possible coffee bean shortage must be ranked among the most dire. It turns out coffee bean reserves have plunged to their lowest since the 2000s. …Stockpiles of high-end Arabica beans, a favourite of artisan coffee shops and chains such as Starbucks, totalled 1.078 million bags, or about 143 million pounds, according to data released Monday by the ICE Futures US exchange.” Brazil is the world’s top coffee producer. By the 1820’s it was already producing thirty percent of the world’s coffee. Today, it produces a third of the world’s coffee with 40 to 60 million bags annually.

Speculation is rife concerning the possible presidential candidates representing the two major parties as the nation approaches the 2024 elections. Everyone has an opinion, and the pundits are competing in the expertise sweepstakes. What can we say with some degree of plausibility? The Democrat roster is, by all accounts, dramatically uninspiring. Biden, who speaks in tongues, is plainly beyond redeeming; the question is whether he will manage to survive the year, let alone stumble, lollop, and whiffle to the end of his first term. Kamala Harris belongs in vaudeville or farce, given her talent for provoking laughter. Both will have to be retired in favor of an electable candidate. But who?

The radical left has been falsely accusing Trump of inciting the Capitol riot for over a year now, and their upcoming televised hearings later this week prove that their main objective is to keep the riot in people’s minds even though Americans have long since moved on. But the Democrats and RINOs on the committee are still hoping they can exploit the riot and get people to blame Trump and the Republicans. In the year the committee has been active, they’ve failed to produce any evidence of Trump’s culpability in the riot, but that’s not stopping them from claiming otherwise. In fact, one committee member is even saying they “found evidence”

The White House served up Hollywood star Matthew McConnaughey to lecture us on the virtues of assorted gun control proposals yesterday. He emotes more effectively than press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, but what does he have to offer? He is a native of Uvalde. He feels strongly about the Uvalde massacre. He doesn’t think too much of the Second Amendment. He has a superficial above-it-all take on the culture war. He is a tool of the Biden administration. Are we seriously supposed to believe that he “feels” more strongly about the massacre than you or I do? That he’s a better person? That he “cares” more? Even if so, which I doubt,

President Joe Biden has scrapped Donald Trump's red, white and dark blue color scheme for the new Air Force One planes, citing the additional costs it would require. That means the Biden administration is keeping the light blue and white scheme that goes back to the Kennedy era. The new Boeing 747-8s, which are being modified into flying White Houses, aren’t expected to fly until 2026. The Air Force revealed earlier this week there's a design flaw in Trump's color plan
