A 74-year-old golfer lost his mind on Sunday when he saw a man walking his dog on Delray Beach, Florida, golf course, but he didn’t just yell at the guy. Instead, he reportedly broke out a gun and started shooting at him. Then he attacked with a club when he ran out of ammo.
Certainly, it is against the rules to walk a dog on the golf course. That goes without saying. But the golfer’s reaction is extreme, to be sure.
According to a report at WPBF TV, witnesses alleged that 74-year-old golfer Robert Levine went ballistic when he saw 64-year-old Herbert Merritt

Golf does at times drive you insane. Levine will not be playing any more. The world will be better off. That being said, I suspect Merritt will not be walking his dog on any golf courses in the future. Dog didn’t defend his owner?

The next hole that Levine will be playing is the one that Spike will be enjoying.

The caddy should have picked the 3 wood. Grumpy Old Men Cady Shack Happy Gilmore and Grand Torino all balled up into one.

What got into the perp? Good grief. I know better than anyone else that golf can be frustrating, but when I got angry on the course, 99.9% of the time I stayed calm, not even appearing outwardly angry. Rarely, I took it out on my equipment, not on myself or anyone else. Intuitively, I understand the momentary satisfaction of putting a disobedient golf club across my knee and separating the shaft into two halves. Breaking a club may be in bad taste--it usually is--but it's not a crime. Occasionally, it's funny. Clubs can be reshafted. In this loony time perhaps Robert Levine was self-identifying as Gen. Jack D. Ripper, who as you remember carried a machine gun in his golf bag. Huston's article didn't mention Levine's saying anything about precious bodily fluids, but where he's going after his conviction for this comprehensively crazy action--attempted first degree murder--crazy talk won't matter. What an odd way to lose one's freedom. He went a little funny in the head. You know, a little ... funny.

Talk about reinforcing the image of the obnoxious New Yawker. I grew up in South Florida but all these northern transplants are ruining the state.

"get off my lawn!" Isn't it strange that out of 330 Million Americans not one picked up a weapon and went berserk over our entire Democracy being stolen before our eyes, but if you step on an old man's grass or, cut in line at the drive through, or draw a cartoon of Muhammed... things get violent. People are strange,

I usually carry a machete in my golf bag.
If anyone makes a sound while I'm lining up a putt - - I whip out my weapon and cut them off at the knees. Why risk breaking a good golf club - - when a sturdy weapon is more effective?

How many people take a gun to a golf course? Sounds like somebody has a few loose hinges.

I was walking my dog in a park very early in the morning because I needed to go to work later. My dog was trained to walk in the heel position and we walked on the waling path. A very large man came up to me and starting screaming at me about my dog. My dog who was never off the leash and always walking beside me -- so what's the problem? My dog was an extremely friendly pit bull who had pass advanced obedience and won several obedience trials -- I'm a dog trainer. This dog was completely friendly and loved all people. Anyway, when this man came at me with the yelling the dog squared off and took a step forward (she had never done this before) -- and that's when I knew she saw him as a threat. The crazy man noticed it too and I think that's why he kept his distance and moved on. The man was clearly mentally off. My dog and I had only walked calmly along the path (with her leashed) and there was no other person (besides the crazy man) in sight. I'm a woman and I never walk in a park without my dog and my dogs are always friendly and trained dogs BUT they are tough dogs.

Several years ago, while visiting Carmel California, I made a visit to Pebble Beach. Pebble Beach golf course is a world-famous public golf course surrounded by homes worth tens of millions of dollars. Professional golf tournaments are played there every year. At the time, green fees to play were approaching the $500 range what with taxes and all. While I didn't play, I was able to walk the course. The numbers of people walking their dogs on the course was amazing. Most dogs were not on any leash. They just let the dogs run free, and nobody cared. Even the grounds people didn't pay any attention to the doggies running around. Maybe this 74 old golfer just stepped in dog dodo. As for carrying a gun while golfing. It's Florida. Those water holes have an extra hazards in them called gators. In Florida, if my golf ball gets within 10 or 15 feet of the water hazard, I just drop another ball and play on.

Cop: "Mr Levine, we want to get your side of the story. How many shots did you take?"

Played golf at St. Andrews, paired me with people I didn't know. One guy was terrible and after hitting a shot into the berm he threw a club, the caddy we shared in his heavy Scottish accent looked at him and said:
"Arg, ur not gud enof to trow ur club, laddie."
I lost it.

Thanks for sharing #17 of your visit to ‘Pebble,’ as the natives call it. Hope you enjoyed your visit and some of the fine dining at the many venues, on those picturesque hillsides of the three different golf courses. And you are correct, the homes there are amazing! A friend is the sommelier at the Italian restaurant there.
Carmel, next to where the Pebble golf courses are, is well know as the most dog-friendly community in the US, thanks to Doris Day who lived there until recently when she passed away. Clint Eastwood, the former Mayor of Carmel, helped protect its beauty and hospitality. Most businesses have water bowls out front in ‘hilly’ downtown Carmel, and lots of loose pups each morning at the dog beach. My new 7# Yorkie was welcomed by all the dogs off leash, and surprisingly, most all the pups were very well behaved! She was always welcome on the patios of the many lovely restaurants. Reminds me of Europe and all the pups under the tables as their owners dined!
