Portman gets it wrong on Jackson nomination

Original Article

Posted By: Harlowe, 4/6/2022 10:33:25 AM

Rob Portman has gotten good at finding reasons why only Republican presidents should be able to appoint justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. Portman, Ohio’s junior U.S. senator, did it in 2016 following the death that February of Justice Antonin Scalia. Portman joined his fellow Republicans in insisting that the seat shouldn’t be filled during an election year. Thus now-Attorney General Merrick Garland was denied even a hearing on his nomination to the high court by Democratic President Barack Obama. Instead, we’re stuck with Justice Neil Gorsuch, an appointee of Republican President Donald Trump.

Comments:

This editorial is so sophomoric it is embarrassing—as if written by a teenager having a hissy fit. The editorial begins by making comparisons of Democrat versus Republican nominees to the high court indicating from the get-go that the essence of the editorial is emotional/political rather than intellectual. Accusations of Republican justices “mirroring” the activism/legislating “deeds” of Democrat justices neglects citing chapter and verse for such Republican “deeds.” Further, college credentials are one thing, but application of intellect, reason and morality are quite another. Senator Portman’s reasoning for not supporting Judge Jackson is not partisan.

With a wave of their hand, the Chronicle-Telegram summarily dismisseds concerns about Jackson's soft-on-pedophile rulings and anything else the republicans might have gleaned from their questioning. Good to see they're so openly wearing their leftist positions on their sleeves.

Garland's actions as AG clearly show that he should never have been nominated to SCOTUS. This editorial board shows just how lacking in intellect and integrity so many of the media and editors are today. For them, it is all politics -- facts be damned.

Periodically, in what seems like a never-ending assault on our basic values and the rule of law, good news emerges. The good news now is the unanimous decision of a panel of three judges on an Ohio Court of Appeals, supporting a jury decision in favor of Gibson's Bakery in its case against Oberlin College.(Snip)The decision is worthy of our attention because it shows just how troubling the situation is at our colleges and universities.(Snip)The nation is indebted to the Gibson family for refusing to be intimidated by left-wing dogmatists at Oberlin and for standing hard and fast for what is true.

As with many other small businesses, student shoplifting was epidemic, as we covered, Student journalist: Shoplifting at Gibson’s Bakery was part of Oberlin College’s “Culture of Theft”

The possibility of an appeal means Christianity and free speech are still at risk in the Western country ranked No. 3 globally for its commitment to the rule of law. VATICAN CITY (RNS) — As Pope Francis continued attempts to mediate the conflict in Ukraine, former Vatican envoy and outspoken papal critic Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò released a letter Monday (March 7) blaming “deep state” forces in the United States, the European Union and NATO for triggering the current war and demonizing Russia. The archbishop said in his letter that Putin has been cornered by an aggressive NATO, backed by the United States, which is seeking to escalate the conflict for its own gains. “This is the trap for Russia just as much as Ukraine, using both to allow a globalist elite to bring its criminal plot to fruition,” Viganò wrote.

Pope Francis, a leading advocate of Doormat Christianity, is at it again, trying to reverse nearly two millennia of Christian doctrine, by preaching total passivity—even against violent aggression. On March 18, 2022, Francis declared before an audience that “A war is always—always!—the defeat of humanity, always. We, the educated, who work in education, are defeated by this war, because on another side we are responsible.” So far, all well and good, if only because such lofty but impotent words are expected. But then Francis went so far as to say, “There is no such thing as a just war: they do not exist!” That is a remarkably dangerous claim, of similar naïve thinkers—
