On Sunday evening, Hungarian PM Viktor Orban secured a fourth term after his Fidesz party won an overwhelming victory at the ballot box. Just a day prior, CNN had proclaimed “Top Putin ally facing tough reelection fight in Hungary,” a take that aged like spoiled milk. Once it became clear that Orban had won, CNN then put out a story entitled “Viktor Orban, Hungary’s authoritarian leader and key Putin ally, calls Zelensky an ‘opponent’ after winning reelection.” Hungary’s authoritarian leader and longtime Russian ally, Viktor Orban, clinched a fourth consecutive term in power on Sunday, after a landslide election win

When various state and municipal governments started giving away money and other incentives for the vaccine-hesitant to get their shots, I raised what seemed to be an obvious question. The Oklahoma Legislature passed a law Tuesday that makes performing an abortion in the state a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. The governor is expected to sign the bill into law, and it would go into effect this summer.
Once in place, the law would have major regional impacts. More Texans have sought abortions in Oklahoma than in any other state since a Texas law banning abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy went into effect Sept. 1.

The post mortem reports following the November election are going to be extensive, but even prior to the mid-term elections taking place, which promise to sweep Republicans back into power, you can already see the glaring mistakes being made. Certainly, Democrats have a messaging problem, with some of that being by choice and the rest due to the failures of their policies.
Things like inflation, gas prices, foreign policy disasters, and the border crisis can’t be massaged away with lofty language. On that front, there’s little Democrats can do to change the political dynamics. Joe Biden and his party have to own their boondoggles, whether they want to or not.
But then

As it turns out, two key constituencies are not all that happy with President Joe Biden, leading to concern ahead of a predicted red wave in November. On Monday night we watched discussions with two different subgroups of partisan Democrats assembled by the firm: “Black Base, Always vote for Dems, Ages 25+” and “Youth Base; Always vote for Dems, Ages 25 – 39.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russian troops of indiscriminately killing civilians "for their pleasure" in an emotionally-charged address to the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, a day after he visited the Kyiv suburb of Bucha, where shocking images of bodies in the streets emerged over the weekend.
Zelensky described the aftermath of Russia's retreat from Bucha in horrifying detail, describing entire families killed, people with their throats slashed, women raped and killed in front of their children. He said Russia's actions were no different from those of a terror group, except that Russia is a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

A certain amount of caution is recommended about reporting and commenting on the Ukraine War, mostly because solid facts are hard to come by (the “fog of war” and all that), and judgment about what to do is in equally short supply, especially inside the head of our president.
A few things appear certain. First, the Ukrainians have fought with great skill and effectiveness, and surprised the world with their resilience and ability to land counterblows, including, apparently, an attack on an oil storage facility inside Russia. There are several hundred dead Ukrainians in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha. This is an incontrovertible fact as independent news sources have confirmed and Western media has been trumpeting it for the last two days. What isn’t being mentioned nearly as often is that there are also several hundred dead Russian soldiers along with dozens of destroyed armored vehicles in the town.
Bucha was the scene of horrific battles — especially after Russia began to withdraw from the area. You can expect civilian casualties on an urban battlefield. Neither side is ever as careful as they are required to be by the Geneva Convention, and civilians always pay the price.

Washington - Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney say they will vote to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s “historic nomination” to the Supreme Court, bolstering bipartisan support for the first Black woman to be nominated for the court.
The senators from Alaska and Utah announced their decisions Monday evening ahead of a procedural Senate vote to advance the nomination. They join Sen. Susan Collins of Maine as Republicans who say they will support Jackson.
Jackson, a federal appellate court judge, was nominated by President Joe Biden to replace retiring Justice Stephen Breyer.
