Our Ukraine Dilemmas

Original Article

A certain amount of caution is recommended about reporting and commenting on the Ukraine War, mostly because solid facts are hard to come by (the “fog of war” and all that), and judgment about what to do is in equally short supply, especially inside the head of our president. A few things appear certain. First, the Ukrainians have fought with great skill and effectiveness, and surprised the world with their resilience and ability to land counterblows, including, apparently, an attack on an oil storage facility inside Russia. They may yet hold off Russia’s army, or convert the war into a stalemate. But as I look at the reliable maps

One of the best analyses of the issue that I have seen recently. Not always a fan of Powerline, but this time, I think this is right on the money.

The greatest mistake by the Western allies after the collapse of the Soviet Union was not disbanding NATO as an anti-Soviet/Russia alliance. It's not that the alliance had to end immediately, but a window of a certain drawdown and extinguishment time, with a hand out to the "Commonwealth of Independent States" (CIS), which was largely the old Russian empire. The West was too steeped in Cold War rhetoric, and the military deeply afraid of losing its influence in these Western nations. The US is example #1. The Euros were somewhat smarter, engaging the Russians in trade, lessening their military forces, and delegating the US to be their "defense umbrella." Everyone knew there was never going to be a Russian attack through the Fulda Gap. (The Russians knew they couldn't get that far with what they had, anyways.) When the Russians rebuilt under Putin it was hardly different that the usual US defense build-ups used to hype the national economy, provide employment, and build national pride, especially after the Soviet Afghanistan debacle. NATO expanded, taking in former Warsaw Pact nations, underscoring its anti-Russian purpose. Still, the heavy lifting fell to the self-appointed "Leader of the Free World", a monicker Americans love. Putin's Russia will continue to be portrayed as this dangerous renegade among nations. It is our necessary "traditional" adversary to hype a threat for the US to continually respond to, despite its well-known and now highly exposed military flaws. Historically, Russia is a failure at offensive wars. It's very good at pursuing exhausted foes, and that's about it. Putin being accused as a war criminal joins such company as LBJ, Nixon and Bush41 and 43. All have had indictments sent on them to the Hague. It's just the way the world turns these days.

A judge has issued the first outright acquittal of a defendant charged in the Capitol riot. Following a two-day bench trial in U.S. District Court in Washington, New Mexico engineer Matthew Martin was acquitted Wednesday on four misdemeanor charges by U.S. District Court Judge Trevor McFadden. Martin claimed that he thought the police had allowed him into an entrance near the Capitol Rotunda on Jan. 6, 2021. McFadden said that, based on video of the scene, that assertion was at least “plausible” and that prosecutors failed to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

The FBI remotely accessed and disinfected US-located devices running a powerful new strain of Russian state botnet malware, federal authorities said Wednesday. Those authorities added that the Kremlin was using the malware to wage stealthy hacks of its adversaries. The infected devices were primarily made up of firewall appliances from WatchGuard and, to a lesser extent, network devices from Asus. Both manufacturers recently issued advisories providing recommendations for hardening or disinfecting devices infected by the botnet, known as Cyclops Blink. It is the latest botnet malware from Russia’s Sandworm, which is among the world’s most elite and destructive state-sponsored hacking outfits.

Ten days after Chinese authorities locked down the city of Shanghai due to a surge in Covid cases, videos are beginning to circulate online showing residents begging for essentials like food and medical supplies and being met with uncaring resistance from the authorities. While Shanghai’s 26 million residents have been confined to their homes since last Sunday, cases in the city remain high. Authorities recorded 17,077 new Covid cases on Tuesday, but reported just 311 of those as symptomatic, according to the Associated Press. Footage circulated on Chinese social media app Weibo purported to show a drone flying over apartment buildings where residents stepped out onto their balconies

Sacramento - Sunday’s eruption of gunfire near the state Capitol, which left six dead and a dozen wounded, appears to be a result of a fight between rivals that caught bystanders in a crossfire of automatic and semi-automatic weapons fire, law enforcement sources said Tuesday. Police also announced two arrests, including one man with a long rap sheet who is currently hospitalized with bullet wounds. That man, Smiley Martin, 27, will be booked at Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of “possession of a firearm by a prohibitive person and possession of a machine gun” as soon as his medical treatments are complete, police said.

The Walt Disney Co. has named Kristina Schake as its new lead spokesperson. The political operative who worked as an aide in the Obama White House and again as deputy communications director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign will start immediately. The appointment comes after President Joe Biden tapped Schake last year to lead the coronavirus vaccination campaign at the Department of Health and Human Services, where she was counselor to secretary for strategic communications. She departed at the end of 2021. Schake also co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which challenged the state’s ban on same sex marriage and was ultimately overturned with a Supreme Court decision in 2013.

Will Smith isn’t the only Hollywood star facing career backlash in the wake of a public outburst. On March 30, Warner Bros. and DC executives held an emergency impromptu meeting to discuss Ezra Miller’s future with the studio following The Flash star’s recent arrest for disorderly conduct and harassment. According to a knowledgeable source, the consensus in the room was to hit pause on any future projects involving Miller including possible appearances in the DC Cinematic Universe. The studio has more than a year before it has to make any hard decisions about a potential sequel to The Flash. Warner Bros. also has avoided making any key decisions

If you don’t live in states such as California, Georgia, or Wisconsin, you may have been unaware there were various elections going on last night. A mix of local and special elections took place, including the first step in a special election to replace recently retired GOP Rep. Devin Nunes. Given what we know about the current electoral environment, namely that it’s terrible for Democrats, the results weren’t shocking. But they did provide more evidence of a coming red wave as November’s mid-terms approach. In CA-22, The Republicans cleaned up at levels not seen in years.

President Joe Biden's pick to serve on the Federal Election Commission is representing Stacey Abrams's nonprofit and Raphael Warnock's church in a lawsuit that challenged the validity of Georgia's 2018 election due in part to the state's use of "unreliable" electronic voting machines. In November 2018, election lawyer Dara Lindenbaum signed on to a federal legal complaint on behalf of Abrams's Fair Fight Action. The complaint challenged the constitutionality of Georgia's 2018 election, which saw Abrams lose to Republican governor Brian Kemp in a race she never conceded. Warnock's Ebenezer Baptist Church joined the suit in early 2019, just months before the Democrat entered Georgia's 2020 Senate race.

When various state and municipal governments started giving away money and other incentives for the vaccine-hesitant to get their shots, I raised what seemed to be an obvious question. What would happen if desperate people, particularly the homeless, began showing up at multiple pods and getting multiple vaccinations just to cash in on the money or other rewards? Had anyone actually studied what would happen to patients who received far more than the CDC recommended number of injections at the prescribed intervals? We may be about to find out. One guy in Germany was arrested after reportedly going for as many as 90 injections. He wasn’t trying to be

The governor is expected to sign the bill into law, and it would go into effect this summer. Once in place, the law would have major regional impacts. More Texans have sought abortions in Oklahoma than in any other state since a Texas law banning abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy went into effect Sept. 1. “Oklahoma is going from a state where we’ve been a haven for refugees who’ve needed support to a state that has chosen to make refugees of its own citizens,”

Barack Obama was at the White House yesterday, making it clear, as did others at the reception held in Obama’s honor, that Biden’s presidency is over. Watching Obama suck the oxygen out of the room made me wonder if Obama is planning a comeback, something he can easily do. (snip) The reception in Obama’s honor, though, hinted that the event’s real purpose was to signal to Democrat apparatchiks that Biden is now shark chum. The chumming process began when Obama referred to Biden as the “Vice President,” adding, after a long pause, “that was a joke.”

Former President Barack Obama tweeted support for President Biden Tuesday evening shortly after an embarrassing video emerged from a health care event the two hosted earlier in the day. Obama visited the White House, for the first time since leaving office in 2017, where he and Biden hosted a health care event in which they touted the Affordable Care Act and discussed options for making health care more affordable. The former presidential duo was united again under the White House roof, but pictures and videos of the event showed people adoring the former president, even to the detriment of the man currently serving in the White House.
