A 14-year-old boy visiting from Missouri fell to his death late at night from a 430-foot-tall thrill ride at an amusement park ride along a busy street in the heart of Orlando's tourist district, officials said Friday. Sheriff's officials and emergency crews responded to a call late Thursday at Icon Park, which is located in the city's tourist district along International Drive. The boy fell from the Orlando Free Fall ride, which opened late last year.
Orange County Sheriff John Mina on Friday identified the teen as Tyre Sampson, who was visiting central Florida from Missouri with a friend's family. Detectives investigating the death will look into

Other reports have stated that the 14-year-old was well above the maximum safe weight (about 275, or twenty stone) for this ride. If the ride operator had noticed the passenger's weight and not told him he was above the allowed weight, there might have been a problem. So he stayed silent, if he knew. Negligence in more than one way. How big a problem now?

Was it negligence, #2, or fear of either being assaulted by a huge kid or of being accused of discrimination?

Re #4: My second sentence in Reply #2 contained an error. Please subtract the not.
The operator, if he was aware that the boy was well above the maximum weight allowed on the ride, was probably willing to let it go because he didn't want any controversy. However, there was a reason for the weight limit. What a way to go. Kinda splash.

Number 4 is absolutely spot on. In this WOKE universe there can be no criticism or denial of anything said or done by a person of color without harsh back lash. The safest course is to allow people of color to say and do whatever they desire and not get in the way, hoping that there will not be undue consequences. So if a morbidly obese black teen knowingly insist on riding without a seat belt then no way are we going to deny his wishes. Note that the teen expressed his personal concern to his friend indicating that he knew he was taking a risk. Now hundreds of people will be out of work because of our fear of inciting an ugly incident.

Happened last week. He was a giant at age 14 and should not have been allowed on the ride. You have to wonder if the staff allowed him to ride to avoid a confrontation based on race.

Regardless, I can't imagine the horror of sending your kid on vacation with friends and then this happening.

No worries I am sure the ride owners have good insurance. Lawsuit on the way. Bust out your checkbook.
Over the shoulder straps were insufficient, and they need a three-point system with a web between the legs as well as both shoulders all tied together.

6ft 5in/340lbs at the age of 14yo...there is NOTHING in this world designed for such a person, everything needs to be custom made.

#10 - That happened to our neighbors thirteen years ago. Their 18-year-old daughter, just graduated from high school, went with a friend's family to Lake Tahoe. She was killed in a jet ski accident. The trauma is tremendous, and her parents have never really "recovered". No matter the externals, this is a tragedy for the parents, family and friends.

FWIW He didn't fall 400+ feet. The ride would fall unchecked from maximun height, slowing heavily at the end. That's when the kid slipped out, guessing from video of the incident -- 50-75 feet.
The kid was remarkably soft, local tv has shown pics of him in a locker room. Securely cinching up that kind of shiftable mass would have been next to impossible. A three point restraint would have created its own peril, considering the hard braking at the end of the ride's fall.
And yeah, he should never been allowed on the ride. One can imagine the pressures on those who would have said "No" so there's just a lot of blame to go around.
The kid knew something was wrong at the top of the ride, nearly panicked then he told his friend "Tell my parents I love them if I don't make it". This story from his father.

Writeup says that passenger can unfasten his own harness. I'm guessing that's exactly what he did, a bit too early. His father is already counting the money.
