MINNEAPOLIS — The judge who sentenced white former Officer Kim Potter on Friday to two years in prison for killing Black motorist Daunte Wright cited the difficult job that police face — and Potter’s remorse — as justification for giving her a light sentence. Hennepin County District Judge Regina Chu choked up as she described the difficulty deciding on a sentence for Potter, who said she meant to use her Taser but mistakenly fired her handgun into Wright’s chest as he tried to drive away from a traffic stop in April. Wright’s family and attorneys angrily condemned Chu, who is

Comments:

For some reason they specifically point out the judge is Asian, as if that matters. Not everything is about race. The officer made a terrible mistake and will spend time in prison, and likely have no future career.

'Daunte' [he must be French or something] had a warrant for illegal gun possession. The police were obligated to arrest him. Instead of going along peacefully and meeting with an attorney at the police station, he decided to resist arrest. This led to the officer's screw-up. He is at least partially at fault.

This was a tragic mistake and the police officer is paying dearly for it. If this had been my child I would not be consoled by that and I understand. But as soon as they pull the race card our ears shut off. It’s been overplayed to the point that it’s meaningless.

Stop basing everything on race. That is BS. it's all about behavior. Behave like an uncivilized savage with no regard for others and it will eventually come back to bite you. As long as all accidental deaths are treated the same, no problem. What is the average sentence in a case like this?

Of course, the mother nor father accept responsibility for the upbringing of Wright, whose criminal (long rap sheet) activity brought about his arrest, and his resistance to arrest made possible the accident that killed him. Clearly his raising was deficient. Those parents of Daunte Wright are POSes to be sure.

In a story about this on the local Mpls news tonight, they put on screen a picture of Daunte smiling in a baseball uniform - you know - the all-American boy. Yes, there was indeed looting at some businesses in the Twin Cities after the sentencing...including the Burlington Coat Factory...because..you know...ya gotta dress warm for the next peaceful protest. Surprisingly, AG Keith Ellison supported the judge's decision.

A little off topic. As I read the article I thought about another killing. i.e. Baldwin shooting that film director. In both cases the shooter seems to have believed they were not using a deadly device. Baldwin thought the gun did not contain a bullet; Potter thought she was firing a laser. The Judge's remarks about the sentence seem very sensible to me.
