Audit: IRS lost more than $400 million
because of broken mail machines

The IRS cost the government more than $400 million over the last three years because it didn’t bother to fix broken mail machines, the agency’s inspector general said in a new report Thursday. The machines are supposed to automatically identify which envelopes contain payments to Uncle Sam, so they can be quickly processed and deposited. But the 20-year-old machines are in such disrepair that they kept missing envelopes with remitted payments. Employees shut them off and resorted to looking for payments by hand—a much slower process. The delays meant checks were deposited more slowly, costing the government hundreds of millions of dollars in lost interest payments, the inspector

Comments:

Within the first week in office, a benevolent dictator would close the IRS entirely. No one else dares touch this massive time-wasting drag on the economy, which also harms our competitiveness internationally, because too many people make money on it. There's the IRS itself, the postal service, tax attorneys, tax accountants, the makers of Turbo Tax et al, and who knows who else, let alone countless soul-crushing hours wasted by people doing their personal taxes, and otherwise irrational moves made by companies and investors simply to work around the ever-changing and unpredictable tax rules.

Wow, I can't believe I actually admire the IRS for this. The IRS lost a Hades of a lot less then our military did in Trashcanistan.

20 year old machines? The IRS has a huge budget squandered away on useless personnel, union meetings, personal business, political business, nice offices for the headmasters, seminars in Vegas, unnecessary vehicles, padded expense accounts, salaries 50% above the private sector, days off 3X the private sector. No money for machines.

Well, the good news is that the IRS employees performed the work manually instead of sitting on their hands, waiting for the machines to be repaired.

Go to a national sales tax and we won't need the IRS. That being said, I am sure that the IRS had plenty of money for parties and bonuses.

Atlanta—A federal cybersecurity agency is reviewing a report that alleges security vulnerabilities in voting machines used by Georgia and other states and says the document shouldn’t be made public until the agency has had time to assess and mitigate potential risks. The report has been under seal since July in federal court in Atlanta, part of a long-running lawsuit challenging Georgia’s voting machines. Its author, J. Alex Halderman, said in sworn declarations filed publicly with the court that he examined the Dominion Voting Systems machines for 12 weeks and identified “multiple severe security flaws” that would allow bad actors to install malicious software.

Houston’s main transportation authority has been slammed on social media for its “performative” tribute to Rosa Parks. Texas’ Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County—better known as METRO—revealed last week that they were placing a yellow seat at the front of each of their public buses to mark what would have been Parks’ 109th birthday. The statement was accompanied by a photograph of one of the seats, inscribed with the words “Dedicate to the Memory of Rosa Parks.” METRO stated that the seats would be a permanent addition on their buses as a way to honor Parks’ “act of courage.” Parks become a leading figure in the Civil Rights

Washington—U.S. regulators on Friday put the brakes on their push to speed Pfizer's COVID-19 to children under 5, creating major uncertainty about how soon the shots could become available. The Food and Drug Administration had urged Pfizer and its partner BioNTech to apply for authorization of extra-low doses of its vaccine for the youngest children before studies were even finished—citing the toll the omicron variant has taken on children. Next week, FDA advisers were supposed to publicly debate if youngsters should starting getting two shots before it's clear if they'd actually need a third. But Friday, the FDA reversed course and said it had become clear

City officials are still determining how many municipal workers will be fired for refusing an order to get vaccinated against COVID-19, Mayor Eric Adams said as the deadline arrived Friday. “This morning we had a call to do the analysis. We are going to come out with the full numbers over the weekend,” Adams said during an unrelated news conference in Brooklyn. The mayor said the number of public employees on the chopping block remained unclear in part because “some people had their vaccine, took both their shots, yet they did not turn in their information.” The city has said that nearly 4,000 of the Big Apple’s approximately 400,000

Europe's medicines watchdog today announced it will probe thousands of reports of women suffering menstrual changes after getting Covid vaccines made by Pfizer or Moderna. The European Medicines Agency's drug safety committee is investigating both cases of heavy bleeding and missed periods following vaccination. It will look through all the reported incidents in the EU and clinical trial data, as well as review the scientific literature. The EMA's panel previously investigated the connection between irregular periods and Covid vaccines but could not establish a firm link. It is reopening the case after receiving 'spontaneous reports of menstrual disorders' more recently. Women around the world have reported an irregular period
