Accused Times Square subway shover should
never have been on streets, sister claims

The sister of the deranged ex-con accused of fatally shoving a Times Square straphanger told The Post on Monday that her sibling never should have been free to walk the streets. Josette Simon wept as she recalled she once even begged a hospital to keep her troubled brother locked up after his life was derailed by mental illness.(Snip)“Somehow, in his 30s, something happened and he lost it,” she said. “He kept seeing and hearing people after him.(Snip)“I remember begging one of the hospitals, ‘Let him stay,’ because once he’s out, he didn’t want to take medication, and it was the medication that kept him going,”

Government officials know that it's much cheaper to let people with dangerous mental illnesses (homeless and otherwise) roam the streets than it is to keep them institutionalized, where they'd pose much less danger to themselves and to others. Addressing the cost of care is beyond their limited abilities, but somehow they have unlimited amounts of our money to spend on everything else that we don't want.

Well what in the hell were we going to do with him? The damn liberals decided about 20 years ago that the mental asylums were cruel, so they pushed and pushed until now they are pretty much all gone. Normal hospitals do not have the facilities to warehouse the mentally insane or care for them. Thanks again, liberals. You F up every single thing you touch.

It's a lot farther back than 20 years. The blame rests squarely on Lady Bird Johnson who being a follower of an idiot 'expert' pushed the closure of mental health sanitariums and the residents onto our streets. The idea that outpatient care and residential homes could take the place was ludicrous since such facilities weren't in existence and were never built. Add in idiot judges who looked at mental health meds as something everyone had a 'right' to refuse unless you could be proven an immediate risk to self or others and our current homeless nightmare flourished. The modern 'Soros' prosecutor malfeasance makes even violent felons impossible to keep locked away.

A radio talk show host I listen to (will keep it anonymous) once revealed that he has a sister who lives on the street. Despite efforts by the family to put her up in her own room in their house she repeatedly leaves. Been raped, robbed, and mugged and knows it will happen again but that's her mindset. With all of the surveillance technology available today, institutions could be made much safer for those kept there than they were before shutting down.

Here in NY, the reason the mental health system has been reduced to a skeleton system is very simple, they don’t vote (themselves) and they don’t contribute to the proper “candidates..”
