Baseball operations president Erik Neander said in a statement posted on the team’s Twitter account late Tuesday afternoon that it was an “unexpected and difficult loss.” The Rays provided no other details. Could be drugs, could be congenital heart defect, could be vaccine. If either of the first two, we'll hear it immediately. If the third, we'll hear crickets.

When I read 'dies unexpectedly', my BS detector goes into overdrive. I am frankly shocked at the number of 30-50 year olds dying locally these days in my little town. I have seen no less than 4 people in the last two weeks in that age range. All died in the hospital, none of accidental death, though you cannot tell by the obit exactly what the cause was. Normally, you see an obit for a young person once every few months around here, and its almost always a car accident or something like that. The COVID meter for the country doesn't go up, but they are dead just the same.

The Secret Service improperly redacted hundreds of pages of records related to Hunter Biden’s overseas travel—and apparently withheld information about trips to China, Russia and other countries, two leading Republican senators claim. In a Tuesday letter to Secret Service Director James Murray, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) alleged the agency “hid names and other information contained in email conversations regarding Hunter Biden without any proper legal justification.” The senators specifically noted that documents turned over at their request “do not show whether [Secret Service] personnel or Hunter Biden traveled to Kazakhstan in May or June 2014” during a trip to Paris.

The Department of Defense reportedly wants to allow people who identify as nonbinary to serve openly in the military and is hiring a Washington, D.C.-area think to study the issue. The Pentagon asked the Institute for Defense Analyses to “quietly” determine how it can open up military service to troops who identify as neither male nor female and often use “they” or “them” as their pronouns of choice, according to the online news outlet military.com, which cited three advocates familiar with the request. Lt. Col. Bree Fram, a transgender Air Force officer, told military.com that speaking with nonbinary military personnel is a “great first step”

Senior Senate Democrats are insisting that universal mail-in ballots and voter drop boxes, measures included in their election overhaul legislation, help to fight racism. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota Democrat and chair of the Rules Committee, said the federal voting measure is needed to counter what she called efforts by some states to suppress the vote. “They’ve rolled back things that they’ve changed during the pandemic, like witnesses for mail-in ballots in South Carolina,” she said. “No matter which way they did it, it all adds up to one thing. And that is voter suppression and limiting people’s freedom to vote.”

The Carhartt apparel company is the latest to find itself in the middle of the COVID-19 wars after an internal memo informed employees the company would forge ahead with its vaccine mandate despite a Supreme Court ruling striking down President Biden’s testing requirement on unvaccinated workers. In a letter that circulated online, CEO Mark Valade said workplace safety is key and the ruling “doesn’t impact that core value.” It also said an unvaccinated workforce represents a risk the company is “unwilling to take.” The letter kicked up dust in the Twitterverse, with #BoycottCarhartt trending for days, while some said they’d double down on orders in support of the company.
