Remembering Gelly on My Melancholy Christmas

I fooled around and fell in love. No, not that kind of “in love.” Guys like me who marry up don’t make that mistake if they know what’s good for them. No, I fell in love . . . with a puppy. And since I lost him a few days ago, there’s a hole in my heart this Christmas. My friend Jonah Goldberg is about the best writer I know. With that kind of touched-by-God talent, you would think the first thing he’d want you to know about him is that he’s a writer.

Comments:

This is beautiful. Merry Christmas, Ldotters.

If Jonah Goldberg is your friend and you consider him to be "about the best writer I know"... You must not know any other writers. A second grade, crayon clutching, drooling scribbler is a better thought out and concise writer than Goldberg. What an insult you are to intelligent people, Andrew.

He used to be one of the best Andrew. Then unfortunately, he seems to have lost his way. Might have been about the time we decided we wanted to choose our own nominee for president, rather than the one the cucks wanted. Sorry you lost your dog though Andrew. A beloved pet leaves a big hole that aches for a very long time.

I feel your loss, but unlike you, I have been blessed to have had several dogs while growing up. And now, my husband and I have during our 54 years of marriage, our 6th and 7th dogs. Each one was special and each one took a piece of our heart when they passed away, but love for another one fills the void in a special way. So this Christmas season I want to remember: 1) Snoopy 2) Coke, the beverage 3) Joker 4) Buddy 5) Liberty 6) Justice 7) Freedom All were black Cocker Spaniels, except Buddy who was a red Cocker..and they all have an ornament on our Christmas tree. Merry Christmas to all and hug your four-legged friend real tight.

This really hit home for me. I always loved animals. After marriage, hubby and I decided to get a dog. We had good friends who raised Great Danes ….big, regal, lovable Danes. We chose one and she was our baby. Sadly, they don’t usually live more than 7 or 8 years and when her time came, it absolutely broke my heart. I still can’t think of her without crying. A dog is your best friend, loyal, loving, playful, empathetic. My condolences to you, Mr. McCarthy, but consider yourself blessed to have enjoyed the love and companionship of the finest animal God ever created.

I lost Peanut four years ago. I still miss him, and his pictures are still hanging around my home. As a firm believer that all dogs go to heaven, I believe in my heart that I will see him again.

In the course of our marriage - 4 dogs, at least a dozen cats and 3 horses - ever one of them took a piece of our hearts with them. I’m a big believer in the Rainbow Bridge and know that I will be reunited with them when the time comes. We celebrated Christmas by taking our two greyhounds on a long walk on the beach yesterday afternoon. Sunny, 68 degrees and a nice breeze blowing. And they loved every minute of it.

We lost our Doberman at only 6 years old and after two years our hearts are still broken for our baby boy. One of the most heart wrenching dog stories is Rescuing Sprite, by Mark Levin. He also is a great dog lover. My condolences to McCarthy even though I have lost some respect for him.

We lost our Tolliver this past year, the third pup my husband and I have had to say goodbye to together. He loved Christmas! Would tear into every present under the tree with joyful abandon and play with his new toys all day, just like a kid. So to honor him we bought, and wrapped, gifts for every dog in our local shelter last week. I like to think Tolliver was beside them all, helping to open the presents cuz he was a shelter rescue too.

McCarthy does something unusual here. While talking about his dog (whom he had for apparently a short time) he reveals a great deal about himself. Having watched and listened to him on Fox (and never really warmed to his remote, rather cold personality) his tale of his life experiences and his reaction to them came as no surprise. Even ice blocks melt. But now he has stepped back again. Won’t allow himself to be vulnerable again. Quite a case study.

Washington — Starting Saturday, private health insurers will be required to cover up to eight home COVID-19 tests per month for people on their plans. The Biden administration announced the change Monday as it looks to lower costs and make testing for the virus more convenient amid rising frustrations. Under the new policy, first detailed to the AP, Americans will be able to either purchase home testing kits for free under their insurance or submit receipts for the tests for reimbursement, up to the monthly per-person limit.

Princeton University in New Jersey will forbid students from leaving the school’s host county once the new semester starts due to rising COVID-19 concerns. Barring “extraordinary circumstances,” students can’t venture beyond Mercer County and Plainsboro Township beginning on Jan. 8 through at least Feb. 15. The restriction does not apply to sports teams. Citing a surge in COVID-19 cases, the school delayed the return of students to the Ivy League school by a week.

In the latest edition of the theater of the absurd, White House COVID coordinator, Jeff Zientz, had some “stark” words for the untouchables, i.e., the unvaccinated masses. At the December 17 press briefing, Zientz commented on the incoming Omicron wave, sounding rather ominous and depressing, “. . . the Omicron variant is more transmissible and our medical experts anticipate it will lead to a rise in cases,” said Zientz. “But unlike last winter, we now have the power to protect ourselves. We are intent on not letting Omicron disrupt work and school for the vaccinated. You’ve done the right thing, and we will get through this.

Mollie Hemingway has written a blockbuster book about all the strands of deception and falsehoods that converged to take down Donald Trump on Nov. 3 and 4 and beyond (and before) in her book: Rigged: How the Media, Big Tech and the Democrats Seized Our Elections (Regnery, 2021). I twice asked two Barnes and Noble stores in two weeks whether they had it in stock, and each time -- no. So I finally had to order it online. It has ten chapters, plus a prologue and an epilogue. The total number of endnotes is 1,243 (I added them up), many having extensive commentaries.

This year marked the 25th anniversary of my arrival in the United States, and as the cliché goes, it feels like yesterday. Memories of war and life in a refugee camp penetrate my consciousness daily. The life of cruel suffering, being witness to genocide, and struggles as a refugee and later as an immigrant are part of my ontological makeup. Such events change you in previously unimaginable ways—fostering emotional strength but also existential fatigue. I left Bosnia at the end of 1992, almost a year into the war.

"We cannot pump it anywhere because it just comes right back into the freeway." I-94 is still flooded from east Dearborn to east of I-75.

LANSING — A Michigan chemical company that arranged for Gov. Whitmer's reelection campaign will pay PVS Chemicals of Detroit for the $27,521 cost of the flight to visit Whitmer's father, not a nonprofit corporation that Whitmer controls, as announced earlier, Whitmer campaign attorney Christopher Trebilcock said in a letter obtained by the Free Press.

Most people look at the choice of Kamala Harris for Vice President and scratch their head. “Why would anyone pick a person so wildly devoid of political talent or even the basics of likability?” they wonder. The conventional wisdom is that she checked the right number of boxes to fulfill left-wing interest group demands, which is partially true, of course. Overlooked, however, is how there is one more, rather good and important reason Joe Biden, or really any politician, would pick someone like Harris: because by comparison, you’ll always look better. Harris is such a singularly grating personality that she polls lower than lemon juice on an open wound.
