Despite rave reviews, Disney’s Encanto, an animated musical with songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, took a nosedive at the holiday box office.
Lol.
As of Thursday, this tale of a magic castle in Colombia (or something) is expected to gross just $26 million over three days and an anemic $38.6 million over the full five-day holiday.
First off, no one can blame streaming. This is a theatrical-only release.
Secondly, no one can blame the pandemic. Plenty of movies are opening just fine.
How bad is this?
Oh, it’s bad.
By comparison, one of Disney’s biggest bombs, The Good Dinosaur, grossed $55.4 million over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend.

I live in flyover country... And like he said.... I've never heard of Lin-Manuel Miranda. I don't think I'm missing much.

I live 90 minutes from Disney and have never heard of it! Gratefully uninterested and uninfluenced by them!

More woke BS from Disney. I guess they figured all those illegals coming across the border would head to the movie theaters.

This article is the first I've seen about Lin-Manuel Miranda (whoever the heck he or she is). I'm not even interested enough to google the name.

A new Spin and Marty movie in black and white would blow the doors off this garbage spewing out of Disney today.

Disney has been infiltrated by Marxists. The worst of the worst. That has filtered down to ABC and ESPN. You never thought you’d see it. Commies using a children’s platform to suffocate our freedoms, our liberties.

Perhaps, not that many people are interested in watching computer-generated schlock where the characters look like peoples' facebook avatars. Notice, the critics liked it.

I'm loving this implosion of all things Disney. Nobody deserves it more. Apparently the perverted one percent of the population is not generating the revenue they expected.

Beg to differ on one point. Disney’s woke problems didn’t start with Star Wars. They started back in the early 90’s with the cartoon movie “Pocahontas” and the anti-white, anti-European theme song, “Colors of the Wind”. If you don’t remember it, look up the lyrics. We did not allow our 5 year old daughter to see the movie or have the video.

Exactly, #14. We did take our kids to see Pocahontas and then never went to another Disney movie again.

Here's the take of a Disney aficionado: the so-called Disney Imagineers have run out of ideas. I look at the trailers for Encanto and all I see is a remake of Coco (which was a fabulous ), similar to how Soul was derivative of Inside Out. They're completely devoid of any new idea, so they're reduced to either repeating themes, making bad sequels, or producing live versions of animated features. Give me something original and creative and I'll gladly pay to see it. But I'm not spending money on retread ideas.
And in regards to #14's comment, I've only seen Pocahontas once. The problem with it for me had nothing to do with race. As a Virginian who grew up just a few miles from Jamestown, to see her frolicking around mountains and waterfalls was just a deal killer. That area is extremely flat. It may have made for some nice animation scenery, but it failed the reality test. Same reason why I will never watch the culture appropriating Miranda's Hamilton. We all know who the Founders were, and to turn them into minorities is just offensive to someone who knows his history. If you're going to deal with history, do it correctly or don't do it at all.

I believe this movie was made to appeal to Hispanics as the movie is set in Colombia. This is probably why the low box office appeal. Lin-Manuel Miranda was in the musical Hamilton.

I was a huge fan of Disney. Some of the old movies are in my library and I trot them out and watch them to this day. But the wokeness has been driving me away. Haven't seen the new 'Star Wars' movies or the Marvel movies. Took a chance and watched the 'Jungle Cruise' - because it was a favorite ride at Disneyland when I was growing up. The plot was a rehash of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies with one blatantly woke scene wherein one of the characters waxed sorrowfully over the need for him to stay in the closet because he would not be accepted by then British society. Spoiled the rest of the movie because it seemed to foreshadow a subsequent, jubilant gay coming out scene that never happened. scene was completely unnecessary to the plot and was clearly a token tossed to the woke crowd. Pretty done with DIsney. I'll have to have a 'woke free' certification before I'll watch a new production.

Castle in Colombia? The movie could have been more real if it was a story about the Colombian drug cartel. And no, I won't go and see it.

Isn't it sad that this once-wonderful, family oriented, moral company, was hijacked and leftified by unscrupulous billionaires who would have the whole world under socialism, with THEM, of course, pulling the strings. WAKE UP, AMERICA! It's YOU they're after.

People are learning to stay away from anything with "Disney" on it. Just the opposite of the 50s through 70s, or even 80s when anything Disney was going to be wonderful.
Now it is going to be leftist, racist crap.

Every action movie today has a girl as the "hero". She is super strong and kicks all the guys' butts -- which is about as unrealistic as it sounds. And more and more of them are failing horribly since you can only push this horrible and unrealistic ideology so far.
I honestly can't remember the last time there was a boy hero in any of these horrible and totally unrealistic movies and TV shows.
Just more of the femi-nazification of our society -- giving girls unrealistic expectations and tearing down boys at every turn. As a woman and mother of both girls and boys, I find this horrible and fear for how this is going to destroy our country in the not-so-distant future.

There is no Walt Disney in DISNEY INC.
The fun and entertaining animated movies of years past are GONE. Everything they do now is to make MONEY and LOTS OF IT.
They absolutely RUINED the Star Wars franchise but re-hashed "A New Hope" by making "The Force Awakens", and then re-hashing "The Empire Strikes Back", and finally having the heroine "Rey" believe that Kylo Ren still had good in him and bringing in (very quietly) George Lucas to give them ideas to save "The Rise of Skywalker".
Now they are pushing one last Harrison Ford (who is 79) movie to end the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" franchise. Even at a loss, they own so many other media concerns they will make money and raise prices at their theme parks to unreasonable and unbelievable prices!
Its next to impossible to avoid Disney who gets glowing reporting, but even the very talented Lin-Manuel Miranda got criticized for being a Hispanic who "was not dark enough" to portray a Hispanic character, so they are turning on themselves as not ______________ enough.
