Impact of forest thinning on wildfires
creates divisions

Original Article

Firefighters and numerous studies credit intensive forest thinning projects with helping save communities like those recently threatened near Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada, but dissent from some environmental advocacy groups is roiling the scientific community. States in the U.S. West and the federal government each year thin thousands of acres of dense timber and carve broad swaths through the forest near remote communities, all designed to slow the spread of massive wildfires. The projects aim to return overgrown forests to the way they were more than a century ago, when lower-intensity blazes cleared the underbrush regularly and before land managers began reflexively extinguishing every wildfire as soon as possible.

Comments:

Internet denizens who live elsewhere regularly slam California for not managing its forests (many of which are federal lands). It’s a bad rap. Blame the envirowackos and their “dueling studies”… Read on and be informed.

Environmental wackos, John Muir-types and the Sierra Club are all Democrats that want more, more, and more government intervention in everything we do, hear, see or smell. Take that as a clue in reading this story. Forest thinning makes sense, but...logging companies, lumber merchants and homebuilders might benefit along with the general public in lower fire risks in vulnerable areas. Increased fire safety mean lesser insurance costs for homeowners and businesses. Environmental wackos/Democrats cannot allow this to happen so fake news about the hazards of thinning is promoted. The Democrats must inject politics into everything the rest of us do hear, see or smell. oh, and what we eat, too.

Ask them about "Recycling Waste" and they will run on for hours...mention that the Billion standing dead trees from beetle kill are "Waste" and that getting them out of the forests, is recycling, that turning them into furniture, buildings, cardboard, even decks and hottubs "Sequesters" their carbon more effectively and permanently than letting them rot does...while at the same time saves the healthy trees from not only death and disease but also FIRE! They get downright huffy, stuttering, stammering and sputtering about how YOU don't understand forests, trees, or nature at all. Add to the debate that the residual waste from those harvested already DEAD trees can be and was..burned in Clean Energy Biomass power stations contributing 23% of California's energy until Enviros shut them down. NOW burning forests pollute at 100 times the rate per year as the power plants ever did in their entire operating life..

Drive through South Georgia's huge timber farms and you will see big firebreaks cut through the forests and no underbrush. Here private companies are allowed to manage their own timber. They don't want fires either and do everything they can to minimize damage.

I don't know beans about forest management, but I've been building camp fires since I was a Boy Scout in the 1950s. My unscientific observation is that more wood equals more fire. And if you lay a log a couple of feet away from the fire it doesn't catch fire, but if you lay it a couple of inches away it does. Seems that there should be a corollary somewhere in that.

I was in the Black Hills a couple of years go and was shocked to see square miles of fallen trees killed by beetles and wondered why the wood wasn’t being put to some use instead of lying where it fell. Lots of it lay on hillsides, so maybe erosion would have increased with removal of the trees, but it would seem the risk of large fires would be very high with all that fuel at hand.

Central Maine Medical Center, a key hospital for regional healthcare, issued a dire warning about the need to shut down critical care services last week if they are forced to fire or lay-off all the unvaccinated workers. The hospital appealed to the Governor’s office, Democrat Janet Mills(snip), for a testing option to avoid losing some of the most important care providers in their system. Today, the hospital quantified their issue and announced they were going to suspend pediatric admissions as well as heart attack and trauma admissions, because they just will not be able to operate.
