Most people haven’t heard of James Zimmermann, but most have heard him. A decorated musician with a long string of acoustic accolades, Zimmermann, 39, has made the sound of his clarinet difficult to avoid. He played at President Barack Obama’s second inaugural, has recorded tracks for best-selling video games, and helped create Walt Disney World’s new theme. Zimmermann was also the principal clarinetist of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra for more than a decade—that is, until the orchestra fired him last February over accusations of racial harassment.

Who cares if the orchestra sounds any good? An extra squeak here, an out of tune toot there with an extra blast or two thrown in…as long as all the performers are diverse and the right colors in perfect proportion.

They eventually get around to eating their own, don’t they? Thanks to being virtuous, Zimmerman is out of a job and the Nashville Symphony has an unqualified oboist. I wonder if the other musicians will have anything to do with “Affirmative Action” Titus? I don’t. This is called a Pyrrhic Victory for Titus. He won the battle but will lose the war.

Apparently, after he was let go, he learned how/got certified to code and then got himself hired as a tech for Salesforce! Sweet revenge.....ha!

The musicians who rise to the level of principal chair in even a midlevel symphony orchestra are the rarest of talents. They dedicate unbelievable hours to practice and preparation on their instruments. The audition process is brutal and inherently designed to intimidate even the most gifted musician. To even get invited to audition is joyous and to be selected is life changing. To lose this time honored process to political pressure is a monumental tragedy.
Yet, symphonies run on donations and season ticket holders and if these wealthy elite turn on the symphony executives for whatever reason they can shut them down and put a lot of great musicians out of work. Hopefully, Zimmerman can still get another symphony gig but if he's viewed as a PR liability it may be too late.

Affirmative action hires sometimes get people killed. At least this incompetent only harms ears and the folks who tried to help him.
No good deed goes unpunished.
To the extent that a country moves away from a meritocracy, it will fail. Move away a little, fail a little. The USA has been running away from merit for decades, and many institutions are failing because of incompetents in positions where they have no abilities.....like the California Whore as an obvious example.

I’ve played numerous orchestras. There is nothing worse than a crummy oboe player! When they are good there is nothing more beautiful! In the wrong hand, however, the entire sound of the group can be destroyed! I’m a trumpet player and bad oboe makes everyone cringe!

The principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic, Stanley Drucker, retired several years ago after more than 60 years in the position. The replacement had to be black. He's good, but he's not principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic good. There are many better clarinetists and I would be surprised if none of them auditioned. In spite of that, the new affirmative action hire is the toast of liberaldom. You can see him interviewed by Alec Baldwin on Youtube.

This is what you get when you live by the politically correct rules. Merit means nothing anymore. Remember the mediocre are always at their best.
