Oscar-Winning ‘Star Wars’ Editor Blasts

Marcia Lucas, who won an Oscar for her editing work on Star Wars (1977), ripped into Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams and their new Star Wars trilogy. Interviewed in a new book, she doesn’t hold back: I Like Kathleen. I always liked her. She was really smart and really bright. Really wonderful woman. And I liked her husband, Frank. I liked them a lot. Now that she’s running Lucasfilm and making movies, it seems to me that Kathy Kennedy and J.J. Abrams don’t have a clue about ‘Star Wars.’ They don’t get it.

Can anyone tell me: what's gonna make the Sith happy? They like to destroy planets and every single person in the galaxy? Really? Who will make their capes and footwear? It is not simply two warring tribes going to war. It is one nihilistic demigod brute force that wants to kill everyone. Including on its own side. Does that make any logical sense?

I agree. Disney just wanted to milk more $$$$ from a cash cow. It got so bad they had to call George Lucas back in to find a way to wrap up all the damage done by the Disney story arcs. Nothing against female Jedi-- they are cool! Just too many things that never seemed to add up. The Mandalorian series was much better and more well thought out-- Wondering what they are going to do with Obi Wan series...

Star War grew into all about selling action figures. The first several movies were entertaining because the characters were entertaining but the science of the whole thing became ridiculous. Life sabers to fight with? The technology is 21st century. Ewoks, using trees to destroy a force that uses machines to traverse hundreds of light years. Jar Jar, a mentally deficient being capable of flying one of these machines. It just got too unrealistic even for SciFi.

While I definitely agree with #14 on the low tech vs. high tech lack of reality with light sabers and ewoks's weaponry, I have to observe that the Taliban defeated the highly technical and well-equipped U.S. Army. It is called the will to fight, even to the death.

Unfortunately, all these “girls’ power” movies are sending messages to our daughters and granddaughters that they are expected to be real badasses. Two things are happening. The first is that it is spawning some really nasty females, and the second is that some girls see the desired image but can’t live up to it. You know what the trend is among high school girls now? It’s self-mutilation by cutting.

Biden Falls into the Trust Trap 2 replies

The American public is not a fan of President Biden’s new pandemic mandate, which strikes many as draconian. Expect loud dissent and open flouting of the order. Republican governors will provide many with the necessary cover. Americans’ low trust in institutions and high political polarization may further weaken our confidence in public health authorities. This public distrust is not irrational. Political officials have repeatedly violated their own rules. The CDC has made absurd recommendations and yet effectively declared COVID defeated in May. The FDA has been far too slow to approve vaccines, refusing to take reasonable risks to improve public health.

First-time filings for unemployment benefits jumped to the highest level in a month last week, coming in well ahead of the 320,000 claims that Dow Jones predicted. With 351,000 jobless claims, the week ending September 18 saw the highest total claims since the week of August 21, the Labor Department reported Thursday. The figure marked a climb from the previous week’s upwardly revised 335,000 claims. In total, 2.8 million Americans were receiving unemployment benefits during the week of September 11, an increase of 131,000 from the week before.

The prognostications about the 2022 election have begun and rightly so, given the current collapse of the Biden administration. Historically, unpopular presidents lead to mid-term wipe-outs for their party, and Republicans appear to be in their best position since the conclusion of the 2020 election. Ironically, a poll out of Virginia that doesn’t actually ask anything about the 2022 election may be the best barometer yet, though. Glenn Youngkin, the Republican candidate for governor has now taken the lead over Democrat Terry McAuliffe with likely voters. That election will happen this year and will represent a major marker in how public opinion is shifting in even blue states.

Thousands of Haitians are sleeping under a border bridge in South Texas as they try to illegally make a home in the United States, the latest example of a desperate group of people seeking haven in America. The fresh humanitarian crisis snagged Washington’s attention this week as photos and video of Border Patrol agents on horses chasing down Haitian migrants got national attention. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said he was “horrified” by the images, and fellow Democrats have been outraged over how the Biden administration is handling these Haitian migrants at the border. Much of the analysis surrounding Joe Biden’s downfall has centered on national approval ratings. RedState has covered that issue extensively, noting that the president appears to have no support floor. That makes him much more like George W. Bush and less like Donald Trump. But underneath the national discussion lies the environment that truly matters as we head into 2022, and it’s not looking good for Biden and his cohorts. Biden faces dismal job approval ratings in several battleground states, including Michigan, Virginia, and Iowa, where the president garnered the lowest score since George W. According to The Hill, Democrats are facing a myriad of issues such as a fundraising gap a mile wide when compared to the Florida GOP. This is on top of the fact that the voter registration advantage that they’ve held for years has effectively been destroyed, going from 700,000 more registered voters in the state to just 23,551 over the course of 2008 to today.

The Democratic-controlled House passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling through 2022 and temporarily fund the government until December 3. But the measure has to be passed by the Senate as well, and Republicans in the upper chamber have dug in and refuse to budge on supporting either a debt increase or a continuing resolution funding the government.
