American Collin Morikawa found it hard to grasp the scale of his historic achievement after holding off Jordan Spieth to win the 149th Open on his championship debut at a sun-drenched Royal St George’s.Morikawa, who won the 2020 US PGA Championship on just his second major start, held his nerve superbly on the closing stretch to become the first player to win two different majors at their first attempt.A closing 66 gave the 24-year-old a winning total of 15 under par and two-shot victory, with Spieth also returning a 66 and world number one Jon Rahm doing likewise to share third on 11 under with 54-hole leader Louis Oosthuizen.

I was pulling for Louis. But Spieth and Rahm acquitted themselves well. (Rahm seems to have grown up since his baby.)
ANYONE but Brooksy.
Congratulations, Collin. Well done!

Morikawa made no bogeys today and putted very well. He deserved to win. Like Morikawa, Spieth shot 4 rounds in the 60s. Those boys played outstanding golf.

Enjoyable tournament, even if the sunny, cloud free, windless 80 degree weather lowered the course's defenses. When the Open Championship is contested, as a spectator you sort of hope for BBO weather, not GGO weather. BBO (Bloody British Open) weather means lashing rain, high wind, and cold, more prevalent in Scotland than in England. Years ago I read a comment by a caddie at Carnoustie, maybe the toughest course in the Open rotation, when asked what the winning four round score would be that year. "Oh, maybe 300," he replied. "And if the wind blows, maybe 400." LOL.
Steve Stricker's American Ryder Cup team will be impressive in September; a solid reason why is that Collin Morikawa, already #4 in the world before today, is going to be on it. I'm as impressed with Collin as I was with Brooks Koepka (who has shown a propensity to win majors in bunches, and incidentally shot 65 today). Morikawa, a cool-headed 24-year-old professional with the aplomb of a burglar, is just getting started. What a career he has in front of him. His front running victory in the Open Championship tells us everything about him. Classy fellow, too. I was sorry for Oosthuizen, who is also a nice human being and has, hands down, the best swing in golf. Keep hammering away, Louie. You never know when your winning streak might alight.
It was nice to see Jordan Spieth get some of his 2015 and 2017 mojo back. Absent the bad finish yesterday, he would have been in the final group and might have won. But he's back, and he's a finisher when he's on. Seeing him miss the 2-footer on the 54th hole yesterday was startling from Jordan. But it happens to everybody sometimes. I have foozled twenty-inch putts myself. Makes me sick in the old boilerroom. I never like to see cases of the yips. Makes me shudder inside. In the 1960s the great Argentine pro Roberto de Vicenzo went through the yips and fixed his problems with a new mallet-headed putter and a lot of practice. But before that happened, I still remember Roberto's lament. (From memory) "I not make three-putts. I make four-putts. I look at the hole and she look like a little spike mark, and I tell myself, 'Roberto, you no can put the ball in there.'" I know what he meant, and loved Roberto de Vicenzo, who won the Open Championship at Hoylake in 1967.
Anyway, it was a good tournament with a great champion. Congratulations to Collin Morikawa. And keep it up!

It was truly a fun tournament to watch. I was pulling for Spieth, but am very happy for Morikawa, who is an impressive and gracious champion. Some great young golfers to follow.
I just pray the PGA doesn’t destroy the sport and attack their fans like the NBA, NFL and MLB have done.

Back in 1977 - - Woody Allen drew big laughs when he created a character named Allison Porchnik. The contrast of a hip American first name like Allison - - with the traditional Jewish last name of Porchnik - - created a very funny piece of irony.
But - - that was 44 years ago - - and nowadays no one even notices the irony of someone named Morikawa having a first name like Collin.
Anyhow - - he seems to be a really nice, All-American kid. But - - whatever happened to two young phenomena of just a few years back - - Ricky Fowler and Jason Day? They seemed to have vanished into the troposphere.

It was an exciting match.. This young man is so very mature for his age. Here is a bit more about him:

I was especially pleased to see the two sissy boys - Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy - play badly.
