President Biden has been more freewheeling with his remarks in the last few weeks, leading to slip-ups the White House has had to clean up. The most recent example came Friday, when Biden accused Facebook of “killing people” because of the misinformation spread on the social media network about coronavirus vaccines. It was a striking statement that triggered a furious response from Facebook. And on Monday, it became clear Biden had gone further and been more biting than he intended. Less than three days after his initial remarks, the president reversed course, saying Facebook “isn’t killing people.” “My hope is

There are several signs in the market for newly built homes that point to a potential slowdown for the nation’s homebuilders. Data released Tuesday added to the evidence that builders are pulling back. Single family housing starts continued to rise in June, many of those for homes already sold. But building permits, an indicator of future construction, fell more than expected last month to the lowest point since August and were about 100,000 units below the six-month average, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. “The single family market in particular desperately needs more new homes, especially on the lower end

A majority of likely voters lack confidence in Vice President Kamala Harris's readiness to be president, according to a new poll. A survey administered by Convention of States Action and the Trafalgar Group found 58.6% of respondents said they were "not confident at all" that Harris, who would succeed President Joe Biden if he were to vacate office, is ready to be president "based on her performance as vice president." Five percent of those surveyed said they were "not very confident" in Harris. Only 36.4% of the more than 1,000 people surveyed said they were "very confident," "somewhat confident," or

The 2020 polls were off by an "unusual magnitude," missing the national results by the biggest margin in 40 years and erring in state surveys by the greatest amount in at least 20 years, according to a new study released Monday by the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR). "There was a systematic error that was found in terms of the overstatement for Democratic support across the board," said Vanderbilt University political scientist Josh Clinton, chair of the 19-member task force. "It didn't matter what type of poll you were doing, whether you're interviewing by phone or internet or

House Democrats are trying to use a massive climate and infrastructure bill to change how Americans get around — by breaking states’ decades-old fondness for building highways. Legislation the House passed this month is the biggest advance yet in Democrats' efforts to bake climate policies into transportation, addressing the largest single contributor to the United States’ greenhouse gas output. It would also represent an historic shift away from the roads-first approach to federal transportation spending that has reigned since Dwight Eisenhower created the Interstate Highway System. But the bill is riling up opposition from two potential allies of the Democrats'

Three Democratic members of the Texas House of Representatives have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the Texas House Democratic Caucus. The three lawmakers are among House Democrats who fled to Washington, D.C., earlier this week to stave off GOP priority voting bills during the special legislative session. The three members who tested positive all have been fully vaccinated, which helps protect against severe illness. On Friday night, one member tested positive for the coronavirus and immediately alerted colleagues, who, in addition to staff members, took rapid tests. On Saturday morning, two additional members tested positive after taking rapid

A hot air balloon pilot died this week after he became trapped underneath the balloon's basket and fell to his death, the Vermont State Police said. Longtime pilot Brian Boland, 72, had left Post Mills Airport in Vermont with four passengers when the balloon started to descend rapidly and touched down in a field. The basket tipped and one of the passengers fell out but wasn’t hurt, police said. Boland then became tangled in gear affixed to the balloon and got stuck underneath the basket as it went back up. He fell from an unknown height and landed in a

Ryan David didn't expect the modest one-bedroom apartment he owned in Dupont, Pennsylvania, to set off a bidding war. But when David listed the second-floor unit for rent in February, he got 160 applications in only a few days — about five times what he'd normally expect. One would-be tenant offered to pay an entire year's rent upfront. Another who had recently moved to the area, offered to pay $650 a month — $50 more than David was asking. (Snip) After dipping last spring, rents around the U.S. have not only recovered but are now blasting past their pre-pandemic levels. In 44
