France is sending a second Statue of Liberty to be erected on Ellis Island, across the water from the original on Liberty Island.The 10-foot “little sister,” one-sixteenth the size of the original “New Colossus,” was taken out of France’s Museum of Arts and Crafts in a ceremony on Monday, a day after the 77th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.“We want to send a very simple message: Our friendship with the United States is very important, particularly at this moment. We have to conserve and defend our friendship,” said Olivier Faron, the museum’s general administrator.

Top cops say they fear that the US could be hit by a horrific summer of mass shootings—with four states alone witnessing gun atrocities within the last 24 hours. Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter Jr and Chuck Wexler, from the Police Executive Research Forum, said a recent explosion in the number of shootings appears to be a long term trend, rather than a blip. My colleague Jennifer Oliver O’Connell reported earlier on a mass shooting in Austin, Texas, late Friday night.
Fourteen people were wounded, with at least two critically-injured during a shooting in downtown Austin.
Two men are suspected of being involved in the shooting, according to the initial reports; although the police later said the number was unclear, but there was a description of one of the suspect.
But it’s what the Austin American-Statesman said about that suspect that is causing a lot of talk today.
