A tourist visiting Manhattan with his family was stabbed with a screwdriver while riding a train Sunday night, police and sources said. The 43-year-old victim from Ecuador was on the southbound 2 train when he was randomly attacked by a 26-year-old man at about 7:50 p.m., according to cops and sources. Using a screwdriver, the suspect, Peterson Merant, stabbed the man in his chest and left arm as the train was approaching the Chambers Street station, police and sources said.(Snip) Merant was charged with attempted murder, second-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon, cops said.

Taking a page from the old "Virginia is for Lovers" tourism campaign, NYC could do, "Come to New York and Get Screwed." Or maybe, "I visited the Rotten Apple and all I got was this lousy screwdriver."

"A twenty six year old man"...Hmmm. Lets see. The description rules out a Swedish Lutheran grandmother from Minneapolis (which has its own problems god knows). Amish perhaps? Nah...

A good Samaritan pulled the attacker off the tourist and stopped the attack. Warren Wilhelm Jr, aka Mayor Bill De Blasio, says the subways are safe and that naysayers are merely trying to undermine the recovery from Covid. Subway passengers say otherwise, citing crime as their top priority, and it seems adding hundreds of new police officers isn't having much of an effect as they can't be everywhere, and as crime is openly tolerated when attackers are set free right away. https://pix11.com/news/local-news/manhattan/tribeca-tourist-stabbed-chest-screwdriver-subway-attack/

I did a quick search on the Internet. The only Peterson Merant I find is not white, redneck-looking bloke in camo clothes and an Amish beard. Perhaps this is a different Peterson Merant. Is this one of folks Michelle Obama says are afraid and are now speaking out? Is this a person who should be afraid of police? If you’re stabbing people, you should be afraid you’re going to be arrested and do time. But I’m not convinced folks are.

Take public transports advise the environmentalists. Only slightly more chance of getting mugged, stabbed, hammered, or pushed in front of oncoming trains than getting the covid. 100% chance of encountering rudeness and unpleasantness.

Why would anyone go there voluntarily? It's like hiking in Kenya with a slingshot in your backpack. If the animals don't get you the people will and there are very few people left.

The level of waste and fraud in unemployment benefits during the pandemic is staggering, even by Washington’s wasteful standards. The federal government has squandered at least $60 billion on fraudulent or improper unemployment payments in the past year, the Labor Department estimates. That amount is roughly equal to the entire annual budget for the Department of Homeland Security and, according to congressional Republicans, about $1 out of every $10 spent on unemployment insurance during the pandemic.(Snip)The jobless payments, including an extra $300-per-week federal benefit that Democrats extended through Sept. 6, have been paid to death row inmates in California and fraudsters in Nigeria

Pentagon officials are mulling ending its JEDI cloud-computing project, caught up in litigation from Amazon, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. Amazon, which was seen as a front-runner to win the $10 billion JEDI project that went to Microsoft in 2019, has argued the contract process reflected undue influence from former President Trump. A US Court of Federal Claims judge last month refused to dismiss Amazon’s claims alleging the Trump administration interfered in the Pentagon’s award. Last year, the US Defense Department completed a comprehensive re-evaluation of its contract proposals and determined that Microsoft’s submission still represented the best value for the government.

San Francisco's high school seniors will return to school for just one day so the city can qualify for $12million in state funds. The deal between the district and teachers union, which has been described as a blatant money grab, will see the class of 2021 not even receive any in-person instruction from teachers but will instead have 'in-person supervision'. Most students will not return to their own schools as only two high school sites are being made available to seniors who will be welcomed back 'for at least one day before the end of the school year'.
