The massive container ship blocking the Suez Canal was straightened and partially refloated early today nearly a week after it ran aground on the vital shipping route and brought billions of dollars' worth of trade to a standstill. Egyptian canal authorities said the 220,000-ton Ever Given had been turned '80 per cent in the right direction' after the stern of the vessel was moved by 335ft and rescue teams vacuumed up sand from the canal bank. Footage showed tugboats blaring their horns and a captain giving a thumbs-up as rescuers celebrated their breakthrough after taking advantage of a high tide brought on by the supermoon to partially refloat the ship.

And the captain will keep his job? Just more proof we need the Keystone pipeline and Saudi Arabia can drink their own oil

I keep hearing and reading of this ship referred to as "Ever Given". Photos show "Evergreen" clearly printed on its side. Any explanation?

Now raise your hand if you believe this was accident, and will not happen again.

#2. “Ever Given” is the name of the ship. It’s on the stern. “Evergreen” is the name of the ship line.

#2. Evergreen is the name of the owning company. Each of Evergreen’s ships has her own name printed on the stern along with the port of registry.

Canal is still blocked. Maybe they should hold off on the celebration and get back to work. For the billions lost wouldn’t it have been a financially sound move to just blow it up? That would inspire them to be more careful in the future.

Agree with #3. This does not pass the smell test. Shutting down the Suez canal would be a great way to disrupt things.

The Suez canal is 160 years old. Yes, started before the US Civil War. Its time for another lane.

1. Trump would have gotten that ship out in a couple days. You know it's true.
2. We have now heard that in fact it was Biden that was piloting the ship.

The ship was going 13.5 knots, which is about 15.5 mph, where the maximum permitted speed in the canal is just under 8 mph, basically doing double the max safe speed.
And, the ship did not choose to engage tugs for assistance, which can dramatically help keep the ship straight in the high wind conditions that existed, and a situation which more sensible captains chose to wait until the winds subsided, or hired tugs to assist them and avoid an accident.
So - the captain chose to go in extremely high wind conditions, refused to use tugs for safety, and then went screaming through the canal at high speed, double the speed limit....which does help steerage a bit, but also dramatically increases the bow wave 'suction' forces which come from the billions of tons of water pushed aside by the huge hull bouncing back from the bank and literally steering the ship.
Severely stupid captain on several different levels. I'd be surprised if he wasn't fired.

#2, the ship's name is Ever Given, owned by the Evergreen company.
They name all their ships similarly.
EverGentle, EverGrade, EverGlory, EverGovern, EverGlobe, EverGreet and Ever Given.
