Part 2: Whatever Happened to Writing?

In Lee Child’s thriller Personal, his audacious hero Jack Reacher lays down the four attributes of good spycraft: hard work, attention to detail, lateral thinking (“outside the box,” as the phrase has it) and unconventional or creative adaptations to circumstance. These are precisely the traits that characterize the mindset and practice of the good writer in any field or genre. Apart from the pragmatic aspects of, let us say, writecraft, one may add, as Ernest Hemingway did in A Moveable Feast, a moral component as well. “All you have to do is write one true sentence,” Hemingway said. “Write the truest sentence that you know.” The rest follows.

David Solway is a literate kindred spirit I met on the pages of Lucianne. Since making his acquaintance here, I have bought and read several volumes of his poetry (translations and original) and essays, and have enjoyed his songs, guitar playing, and singing. He's all North American if not specifically American. (He's Canadian.) I'm as much of a linguistic purist as Solway, and strive--not always successfully--to write good sentences and paragraphs. Sloppy thinking breeds sloppy writing. Beginning in 1975, my apprenticeship to WFB, one of he best thinkers and writers in the business, pointed me in the right direction. Clear writing requires clear thinking. Write good sentences--sincere, in Hemingway's argot--but beware of being too much of a perfectionist. Yes, perfection can adorn a phrase if not an whole sentence, but obsessive pursuit of literature's lost chord can be perilous. Hemingway himself was a victim. Hugh Kenner (known to readers of NR forty years ago) is probably best known for his scholarly work on important modern artists Ezra Pound and James Joyce. In his intellectually shimmering Joyce's Voices, he states: "...(S)incerity--Joyce is telling us--can damn. Not long before he blew his brains out Ernest Hemingway recalled how decades earlier in Paris he had used to overcome writer's block. '...All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know.' Remembering where this led can give one the shivers. By the time that he'd used up the true sentences that he knew (how many does anyone know?) he was getting famous, and the enterprise of being Ernest Hemingway--doing things so that true sentences could be written about them--had to be conducted in public. Constantly being watched, by the world and, more disconcertingly, by himself, he was soon evading himself as systematically as Poldy evades Molly [two character in Joyce's Ulysses]. His subject had become Ernest Hemingway, and he had to keep developing the character. 'How do you like it now, gentlemen?' was the false-jocose lineLillian Ross heard him say over and over, about his role in some uninteresting goings-on. The famous Style became performance, began eyeing itself, imitating itself. It developed formulae: flat nouns, short clauses linked by 'and.' The day came when he could live with none of this any longer." Coldly true.

When you are planning to trick your opponents, it’s best not to tell them in advance how they are going to be gulled into committing to path whose destination they abhor. Maybe it was the congenial environment of NBC News’s Meet the Press, where Chuck Todd would never voluntarily do something that would harm the Democrats, but Senator Chris Murphy (D-NJ) accidentally let us know the strategy the Dems have to slide us down the slippery slope of gun control, even if the filibuster isn’t busted. Joe Biden’s focus on ensuring populism never rises again in America through the institutionalization of mail-in voting, social media deplatforming, gun control, and Curleyism may have to compete with challenges from the global world. The Democratic Party has “near enemies” but it also has “far enemies.” As Gideon Rachman of the Financial Times points out, Biden, in a Foreign Affairs article, saw Washington as leading not only America but the global world. To capture Washington was to capture a global empire. If that empire is lost, then a Democratic domestic “permanent majority” would be hollow. Joe’s problem is that the world he wants to recover has broken away,

In a case that's drawing a lot of attention based on the insane level of leniency shown, two 14-year-olds who bullied, murdered, danced on the body of, and filmed a helpless 13-year-old, have been let off with the mother-of-all-slaps-on-the-wrist by a Riverside County Superior Court Justice. According to local radio station KTLA: "Two 14-year-old Southern California boys who beat a fellow student in 2019, causing his death, won’t go to jail but must undergo anger management therapy, a judge ruled. A federal court on Thursday ruled that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) cannot classify bump stocks as machine guns. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit further indicated that the federal ban on bump stocks, which are devices that can increase the rate of fire for semi-automatic weapons, is likely unlawful and should be placed on hold. The ban on the devices was implemented following the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting that left 58 people dead after the suspect used bump stocks. The Department of Justice issued the 2017 ATF rule “to clarify that [bump stocks] are ‘machineguns’ as defined

In a recent monologue on HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher called Americans a “silly people” for allowing themselves to be mired in culture war struggles, such as the politically correct cancelling of children’s books, while our superpower competition China is laser-focused on political, economic, and military dominance. “You’re not going to win the battle for the 21st century if you are a silly people. And Americans are a silly people,” Maher asserted. He then referenced the latest “cancel culture” controversy – the woke mob’s targeting of children’s author Dr. Seuss over purported racism in his books: “Do you know who doesn’t care that there’s a stereotype of a Chinese man

I know I will upset many readers with this column, but I speak from experience. Women should not be combat soldiers on purpose and should not have combat commands, either. This has suddenly become a pressing matter because Biden just nominated women to those positions. I used the phrase "on purpose" because we can't always predict where fighting will occur. Women in the military must, therefore, be trained and equipped to fight as effectively as possible. However, we must not throw them into harm's way as a matter of course. Yes, I sound sexist and chauvinistic, and some will say I hate women.

There used to be a saying that any country called the “People’s Democratic Republic” was the reverse. Nothing illustrates the semantic inversion better than the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, also known as North Korea). It is neither a democracy nor a republic; in fact, it is actually the only Communist aristocratic dynasty in the world. But their Communist majesties are a royal family on the cheap. That makes them deceptively comical. The Nokor version of “Game of Thrones” featured the assassination of Kim Jong-un’s half-brother in Malaysia, which resulted in the entire DPRK embassy being recently expelled.

Brooks testified at a House Armed Services Committee hearing on “Extremism in the Armed Forces.” She cited the current and former members of the military who had been arrested in conjunction with the Capitol riot and argued

Not even five minutes after the announcement of a mass shooting in progress in Boulder, Colorado, social media erupted into the blame game. It would be hilarious if it weren’t so damn predictable and tragic. Liberal pundits wasted no time in condemning all white gun owners as tools for white supremacy. Without a shred of evidence or reporting, they immediately pinned the horror on a white man with a gun. It was obvious pretty quickly that the man was not white — when the suspect was apprehended, the usual suspects in the media had not yet reported on his race, his social media posts, or his red hats

At Asia Times, I argue that the weird, disturbing and unhinged behavior of Biden’s top officials is due to the sad fact that no-one’s in charge. The president is the man who isn’t there, and it’s every man, woman or nonbinary for his/her/their self. America has had good presidents, mediocre presidents, and bad presidents, but we haven’t no president (except perhaps for Woodrow WIlson’s last months in office in 1919-1920). The Biden administration and private firms are reportedly developing a ‘vaccine passport’ that will allow Americans to return to pre-pandemic activities like travel and shopping by showing proof they’ve been inoculated against COVID-19. The ‘vaccine passport’ is considered key to meeting the administration’s goal of emerging from the lockdown and returning to a semblance of normalcy this summer. It will in all likelihood be available for free through smartphones. Vaccinated Americans will be able to flash a scannable code while those who do not have phones could print out a code on a piece of paper, according to The Washington Post.

The call follows actions taken by several states to lift mask requirements earlier this month and ease business restrictions, such as Texas and Mississippi, which drew sharp criticism amid early-stage vaccine rollouts and the spread of highly transmissible coronavirus variants.
