Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) has criticized West Virginia Governor Jim Justice's plan to introduce major tax cuts, after the Republican took aim at Manchin over the latest COVID-19 stimulus package. Justice complained Monday about a clause in the American Rescue Plan that prevents states from using relief funds to offset revenue losses from tax cuts.
The governor wants to eliminate personal income taxes in the state, phasing them out over the next few years, beginning with a 60 percent cut in January 2022. The lost income tax revenue would be recouped through increases in other taxes but would still leave the state with a $90 million shortfall, according to The Intelligencer.

JEFFERSON CITY — If Missouri wants a share of the new federal pandemic relief aid package, Republicans may have to delay their quest to cut state taxes.
The $1.9 trillion stimulus package heading to President Joseph Biden’s desk contains language saying states cannot “directly or indirectly” reduce tax rates if they want the money.
The aim of the provision is to bar states from cutting taxes and then back-filling the revenue hole with federal dollars meant for relief.
At stake for Missouri is an estimated $5 billion in relief that is designed to help pay for government services and help businesses, families and schools weather the ongoing pandemic.

Sources report that overcrowding at Border Patrol facilities increases daily. At one Border Patrol Sector in Arizona, Tuesday’s detention figures show 500% occupancy over the COVID-19 adjusted capacity. According to sources, the detention capacity recommendations are made to provide the safest environment for front-line agents and migrants during the pandemic.
Until recently, most migrants entering the United States illegally were swiftly returned to Mexico under a CDC emergency order. Many migrants, including family units and unaccompanied children (UACs), were returned within two hours of crossing. The Biden Administration is watering down the application of the CDC order, resulting in the reported overcrowding.

This is the second time in the last two weeks that a top U.S. immigration official has resorted to begging people not to come. I think it might be all they’re willing to do by way of “enforcement” to deter child migrants from entering the country.
You can tell border czar Roberta Jacobson is eager for this clip to circulate in Mexican and Central American media: The border is closed, she says. This is not the time, and is never the time, to try to enter the U.S. irregularly. (“Irregularly” may be a Team Biden euphemism for “illegally.”) But the border isn’t closed.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's government is worried the new U.S. administration's asylum policies are stoking illegal immigration and creating business for organized crime, according to officials and internal assessments seen by Reuters. Ever since President Joe Biden won the White House vowing to undo the hardline approach of his predecessor Donald Trump, Mexico has both looked forward to an end to migration burdens imposed by Trump, and braced for a new influx of people. Detentions on the U.S border have surged since Biden took office on Jan. 20. Mexico has urged Washington to help stem the flow by providing development aid to Central America

Today is the day – Texas is fully reopening. Governor Abbott’s order goes into effect today. Businesses may fully reopen and there is no more statewide mask mandate. Just in case anyone gets too giddy about this milestone, there is news that the most contagious of the COVID variants is spreading in Texas. Curb your enthusiasm, Texas. Houston is the first city to report the presence of all of the known COVID variants. That’s not really a distinction that any city wants. The U.K. variant is the most contagious variant and is spreading in Houston. Public health officials are concerned that Texans will let down their guard

The New York Times reported this week that the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion “coronavirus relief” bill includes $86 billion for failing pension funds.
The Times reported:
Tucked inside the $1.9 trillion stimulus bill that cleared the Senate on Saturday is an $86 billion aid package that has nothing to do with the pandemic.
Rather, the $86 billion is a taxpayer bailout for about 185 union pension plans that are so close to collapse that without the rescue, more than a million retired truck drivers, retail clerks, builders and others could be forced to forgo retirement income.
The bailout targets multiemployer pension plans, which bring groups of companies together with a union to provide guaranteed

California Governor Gavin Newsom gave his “State of the State” address last night and decided he wasn’t giving his opponents and advocates for his recall enough ammunition. So he obliged them by choosing to frame his campaign for “equity” as a question of not going back to “normal” when the pandemic ends because “normal accepts inequity.”
Telling people that things will not “return to normal” after what they’ve been through is not a way to win friends and influence voters. It is, in fact, another reason to sign a recall petition and vote the incompetent governor out of office.

House Democrats passed a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill on Wednesday, sending one of the biggest stimulus plans in U.S. history to President's desk.
The president hopes to sign the bill Friday after Congress formally sends it to the White House, which can take days for large bills. Biden will check off his first major legislative item as the U.S. tries to ramp up Covid-19 vaccinations and jolt the economy.
Here are the proposal's major pieces:
It extends a $300 per week jobless aid supplement and programs making millions more people eligible for unemployment insurance until Sept. 6.

Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Chapek was questioned by shareholders about Gina Carano’s firing from “The Mandalorian,” when cruise ships would set sail again and the future of Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy at the entertainment giant’s annual shareholders meeting on Tuesday.
It’s been a tumultuous first year atop Disney for Chapek, who took the reins from Bob Iger in February 2020, shortly before COVID-19 upended the entertainment landscape. And yet, it’s also been a 12-month period that saw Disney’s shares surge on the growth of its streaming offerings. Chapek noted that Disney’s stock went from $79 a year ago to above $200 this week.

The Department of Homeland Security has chosen a most odd time to take down the F-word and ACAB-festooned fencing and jersey barriers protecting the federal courthouse in Portland.
Last May, after a fentanyl-addled George Floyd was held down for an agonizingly long time (nine minutes) under the knee of Officer Derek Chauvin, riots broke out in his name, at first in Minneapolis and then across the country, especially in “woke” Portland.
Fast forward to now, when Chauvin’s trial is underway. Minneapolis has spent $1 million to secure buildings already trashed in last year’s rioting and looting. But Portland,

An unprecedented flood of migrants heading for the United States from the Mexican border has created a dangerous crisis that has the Biden administration scrambling to react.
And when CNN is the one reporting it, you know it must be very bad.
US authorities arrested and encountered more than 100,000 migrants on the US-Mexico border over the past four weeks ending on March 3, according to data obtained by CNN, marking the highest levels for the same time frame in five years.
The number of migrants arrested on the southern border has been increasing in recent weeks, causing alarm among officials as they scramble to provide resources
