Job cuts in media topped
30,000 in 2020

The media industry was racked by a record 30,711 job cuts in 2020 — a stunning increase of 201 percent from the year earlier when 10,201 jobs were lost. The figures, which were rolled out Thursday by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, included jobs data from the news industry, advertising, television and movie production. Last year’s dismal results topped the previous all-time record of 28,802 jobs lost in 2008 at the height of the Great Recession. And cutbacks in newsrooms, whether broadcast, digital or print, accounted for more than half the losses, or some 16,180 cuts.

Can you imagine the job cuts that could quickly occur within the so-called White House Press Corps if they try to treat Biden as they did Trump and ask anything more than what color socks that Biden is wearing that day. One call from the Biden crew to those reporter’s bosses who are all partisan liberal Democrat supporters will ensure that that offending reporters are out of the White House and most likely out of a job.

Amazon on Wednesday pledged to spend more than $2 billion on affordable housing efforts in three regions where big chunks of its workforce live. The e-commerce colossus said it will use the money to create and preserve more than 20,000 affordable homes in and around its home base of Seattle and its hubs in Arlington, Virginia and Nashville, Tennessee. Amazon plans to distribute the funds in the form of low-cost loans, lines of credit and grants to finance housing for low- and moderate-income families. The company expects to have at least 5,000 employees in each of the three areas in the coming years. The so-called Housing Equity Fund

Macy’s said Tuesday it will close its store in Water Tower Place as it trims its roster of department stores across the country to adjust to online shopping. “The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, and Macy’s Water Tower Place has been honored to serve its customers on the Magnificent Mile for 45 years,” said Andrea Schwartz, senior director of media relations. The store was damaged during looting sprees last summer. Schwartz said the decision stems from a store review Macy’s began in early 2020, which she noted was before COVID-19 and civil unrest disrupted retail operations.

A simple treatment for COVID-19 could be cheaper than 20 bucks — and familiar to most grade school nurses. Head lice drug ivermectin is being explored as a potential treatment for the coronavirus following a promising new study that showed an 80% reduction in hospitalized COVID-19 patient deaths. Just 8 out of 573 patients who received ivermectin passed away, compared to the 44 individuals out of 510 who died after being given a placebo. An earlier study of the antiparasitic prescription drug, which costs between $17 and $43 for a course of treatment, according to GoodRx, revealed promising results in April — by removing all viral RNA within 48 hours of a single

Proposed changes to the rules of the House of Representatives would “honor all gender identities” by eliminating such specific terms as mother and father, son and daughter, and aunt and uncle. Instead, only gender-neutral terms such as “parent,” “child,” “sibling” and “parent’s sibling” would be allowed in the text of the House rules, according to the proposed changes. The proposed changes — which also include the establishment of a House “Office of Diversity and Inclusion” — will be voted on after the House convenes Sunday for the new 117th Congress. Another rules change would prevent Republicans from amending a bill at the last minute, the Washington Examiner reported.

Mr. President, it’s time to end this dark charade. We’re one week away from an enormously important moment for the next four years of our country. On Jan. 5, two runoff races in Georgia will determine which party will control the Senate — whether Joe Biden will have a rubber stamp or a much-needed check on his agenda. Unfortunately, you’re obsessed with the next day, Jan. 6, when Congress will, in a pro forma action, certify the Electoral College vote. You have tweeted that, as long as Republicans have “courage,” they can overturn the results and give you four more years in office. In other words, you’re cheering for an undemocratic coup.
