It’s a hair-raising situation.
A breed of hairy caterpillars — considered the most poisonous in the US — have recently been spotted in Virginia.
The state Department of Forestry is warning residents to be on the lookout for puss caterpillars, which look soft and furry — but have hidden sharp spines that can stick to human skin.
“The ‘hairs’ of this caterpillar are actually venomous spines that cause a painful reaction if touched,” the agency wrote on Facebook.

Do not touch ANY hairy caterpillars. Most sting like the dickens and leave big welps.

Somehow the phrase 'most poisonous caterpillar' doesn't strike fear in my heart.

Puss Caterpillars . . . the new face of the Democrat Party. Soft and furry. But they stick to human skin and cause a painful reaction when touched. I've heard they sniff the hair of little girls too.

Those look like what we always called asps. Every kid is warned from the day he can walk not to touch the hairy ones. And no, there's nothing funny about them.

Co-worker got nailed by one of them. He said it was some of the worst pain he ever felt, and he wasn't some soy boy either.

As a child, I was fascinated by this big fuzzy, velvety, red ant-looking insect. Learned later why they’re called “cowkillers”.

I see a couple of those a year, #12.
They'll make a squeak if you prod them, don't do that.

What a hideous-looking caterpiller. We never had these in my birth state of Illinois. Just a gazillion mosquitoes, spit bugs, and June bugs.

I had some of those in my yard a couple years ago. They are so unusual looking that I looked them up right away. I was surprised at how easy it was to find information and pictures of them. The common advice was "don't touch those caterpillars." Also, they are worse some years than others. It has something to do with weather conditions.

OMG! Run for the hills! Shut down the state! Full body armor hand full face motorcycle helmets mandated for the next two weeks (wink...wink) “to flatten the curve”! Shut down all commerce in the state! Anyone caught outdoors will be arrested and sent to prison to teach lessons! An army of angry spinster Karens have been hired with absolute authority to impose their will on the “plebs”... err...strike that...”free people of Virginia”...yea that’s the ticket! Excellent! We are back in charge baby...muwahahahahaha!

That's quite a nice blonde pelt on that caterpillar! Same as #12 I also had an encounter with one of those big red velvet ants. Yow! The prettier they are, the deadlier they are.

May you live in interesting times, goes the Chinese curse. Well, in 2020 we got the Chinese bioweapon, Nancy's impeachment article against the President for a telephone call to Ukraine, riots and chaos all across the country, murder hornets, and now fuzzy but highly venomous caterpillars. Now we are bracing for the fallout from the November election. May Heaven help us.

Living in Virginia, haven’t seen one of these. However the small, about an inch long usually, harmless looking white hairy caterpillars are very common, and will sting like a hornet or yellow jacket. Best advice, don't try to pet bugs, or raccoons.

Our son came back from a park in north Texas with one on his shirt. Fortunately, no one touched the little beast. They hang out amidst brush and trees.
