Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has officially informed her Democratic Party caucus that the House of Representatives could decide the presidential election — and has urged them to focus on winning races that could decide the outcome.(Snip)Pelosi has done the math, and expects the new Congress to handle the presidential election — if it comes to that.
Therefore, she has told Democrats to focus their resources on winning in states where Republicans only control a slim majority of seats.

I despise Pelosi, but this is a necessary piece of preparedness. It won't be necessary, however.

Can anyone unwind this for me? Without getting into the absurdities it would take for this scenario to be triggered, that 'immediate' vote on December 14 by the CURRENT Congress - has nothing to do with who wins what to take their seats in January. Right? So there is nothing they can do to stop Republicans in the House from electing Trump. Right? In the state/by/state 50 vote scenario Republicans have a solid lock in the House right now. What don't I understand?

They must be sensing that things aren't as rosy as they have tried to fool people into thinking.
And, have not seen those hyped polls lately either, which might mean they realize things have turned Red.

If the Dems go crooked in the House after some crooked dealings in the voting, I'll be looking for a militia to join, and I am not kidding.

One thing that you may be missing, #4, is that the TIMING and meaning of the "current Congress" could be critical and Pelosi knows that. All isn't as clear as it may seem. Our "current Congress" includes AZ Sen. Martha McSally, who was APPOINTED (not elected) to fill McCain's seat. She's now running in a SPECIAL ELECTION to see who wins the seat for the remainder of the 6 years. Her opponent, Mark Kelly, is Dem Gabby Giffords astronaut husband. He is ahead by double digits in ALL polls. If he wins as predicted, he would be seated and voting by the end of NOV---not in JAN like the other candidates. That gives the Demos 1 more vote toward anything Pelousy has up her sleeve.

I'm with #4. I don't understand unless Pelosi somehow hopes to delay a vote until the new congress is sworn in. The Arizona senate race is a mute point as the senate would not be involved.

Nanie, I rarely agree with you. But, in this case I do. If the pubbies can steal control of the House away from you, your caucus will have decided the outcome of the election.

It only gets to the House if the Electoral college ties. The election should be over on December 14th (I think) when the electoral college votes. The fight will be over the makeup of the Electoral College if some states have not certified their elections and appointed their Electoral College delegates. The rules seem to indicate that if a state doesn't send delegates it doesn't get any votes. Could be a really be shouting match.

Sorrry, the winner is the majority of the delegates appointed by the states, not 270

The Constitution spells out what to do if no candidate achieves a majority of electoral votes. John Quincy Adams was elected by a House vote this way in 1824. The losers were not happy but no liquor stores were looted and no one rioted in the streets.

Idiot woman! Each state will have one vote. Republicans outnumber the 'Rats 31/19. As Trump flips a couple of states it will get worse for them.

Wow. When they have it fully explained to them the libs aren't going to like the 12th Amendment any more than the 2nd.
...“the votes shall be taken by states, the representation from each state having one vote”...
So, the delegates vote among themselves to determine how their state casts its one vote? And simple math says Trump 26, biden 23 and a Pennsylvania push?
