Northwestern University asks Evanston residents to
report students who ignore COVID-19
precautions in off-campus gatherings

Northwestern University’s campus in Evanston is going to feel less crowded this fall, with residence hall capacity reduced to about 70% and more than half of all employees still working from home, school officials said Tuesday. But those estimates didn’t fully assuage concerns from residents that students will instead move into neighborhood apartments and throw raucous parties, potentially accelerating the spread of COVID-19 in a suburb that has so far avoided an uncontrollable outbreak. Residents raised the issue Tuesday evening during a 90-minute Zoom meeting, billed as a “community town hall,” to discuss NU’s plan for repopulating its suburban campus when classes begin next month.

Comments:

Let's say one student has it and passes it to other students at a party, how does that put Evanston residents at risk? If an infected student shops locally, they, like everyone else, would be wearing a mask and masks protect us, right?

If all young folks get it and get over it, herd immunity comes sooner. I don't see this as a problem as much as an opportunity. The death rate in that age group is about 1 in a million. Back off, Karens.

The NBA playoffs inside the Orlando bubble averaged 1.875 million viewers for the first week, down 20 percent from last season, per data from RealGM and ShowBuzz Daily. Industry insiders mostly chalk up the decline in viewership to the abnormal season, with games being played in August and often during the daytime hours, when television viewership is generally down across the board. That said, SportsBusiness Daily reported in February that ratings for regular-season games had declined by 12 percent since the end of the 2018-19 season. A New Jersey gym had its license rescinded during a town vote on Tuesday, ending a long-running saga that saw its owners repeatedly defy a state order to remain closed during the coronavirus pandemic, according to multiple reports. The Bellmawr council in Camden County voted 5 to 1 to rescind the mercantile license of Atilis Gym following an hourlong hearing that featured arguments from lawyers on both sides, according to NJ.com. I can’t remember a wildcat strike ever happening by a pro sports team, let alone an entire league, let alone during the playoffs. My guess is that it’ll alienate more people than it’ll win over, but alienation never lasts very long in sports. A million fans will vow today that they’ll never watch the NBA again and most will be back next week, or at least for the Finals. And everyone who isn’t will be back next season. The Milwaukee Bucks violated the collective bargaining agreement with the league when they decided to protest by not playing today’s game against the Orlando Magic.
