Thom Brennaman, the longtime play-by-play man for the Cincinnati Reds, was suspended indefinitely Wednesday and acknowledged his career might be over after video showed him using a homophobic slur on a hot mic earlier in the day.
The 56-year-old Brennaman was pulled from the broadcast booth by the Reds after he said, “One of the f-g capitals of the world,” on the Fox Sports Ohio TV broadcast during the first game of a scheduled doubleheader in Kansas City.
It was unclear what Brennaman was referring to. (Snip)The Reds in a statement announced the suspension and said they were “devastated by the horrific, homophobic remark.”

Really, they were "devastated" by it? I hate to see what would happen to them if a real tragedy hit their organization.

He should have said queer. I understand that’s cool again.

Not to worry, he’ll be reinstated after a suitable stretch in a sensitivity re-education camp.

Good Lord, those people must be traumatized by the dust bunnies under their beds. I have lost count of all of the silly things that are supposed to devastate and traumatize us these days. As if every other person in that locker room hasn't used that same word.

Now if he had said that about practicing Catholics, he would have his job today.

He used vulgar language, but I don't understand what he was referring to, or how it's homophobic. Anyone?

It is a Blazing Saddles reference - Slim Pickens said something to the effect of "dancing around like a bunch of Kansas City F@$$0Ts".

Someone was "offended".
The 1st Amendment explained: "It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely."
CONGRESS cannot restrict your freedom of speech, so the MEDIA MOB has decided to create law based on 'political correctness' to be the arbiter of what is right or wrong in society, EVEN IF something is offensive to others who might disagree, and ONLY their interpretation is correct and acceptable

I didn’t see the Mich Guv’ner hauled off the stage a few nights ago. Her language was raw sewage. This was just sewage. (A matter of semantics, I know)

Good luck to Brennaman. At least we know that he ''calls 'em as he sees 'em.'' Scripture is on his side for knowing what he said and for quickly apologizing. The article left out the name of the team the Reds were playing against.

Before the 1st Amendment was erased you heard that sort of thing in every locker room and military barracks in the country, pretty much all the time. You still do, but people look over their shoulders first.
I still like the word queebie. I suspect at one time it may have been "queen bee", but whatever.

Just a minute here. When someone's speech is offensive, we call in the minority group involved for THEIR opinion. I say call in the Queer Eye people immediately! I do believe they've done numerous segments of their show from Kansas City and that's probably what Brennaman was referring to. There's no doubt Jonathan Van Whatever with the swishy hair would welcome and celebrate the name "fag city."

The First Amendment is about protecting unpleasant, offensive, poor taste language. There is no such thing as illegal speech.

Everyone lives in a world of outrage and gotcha. Let's stop pretending otherwise. We have allowed this to happen as we played tit-for-tat with clowns everywhere.
It's hard to defend "slurs". Brennaman is an "old pro", he knows the game and its rules. He knows he violated one big time. He knows he may have ended his career with the Reds. Sponsors recoil in horror. And this is our world today. Later today we will be outraged over something said by those other guys, if we haven't been already.

No one, in America, has the right to NOT be offended! Offense is taken, not given. Besides, he was not addressing anyone personally. This push by the left to make words off limits, just because someone doesn't like them, must stop.
That is not to say that some words are appropriate for all occasions, but speaking them should not result in job loss. If that was an enforced law, democrats would all be fired!

Wait and see if the indefinite suspension becomes permanent. it was a foolish thing to say. Brennaman probably knew better, but thought he was off air. Have to assume every mic is permanently stuck on.
Used to be one would at most get yelled at, and maybe suspended for a few days. Now people have their careers ruined over something like this.
it will only get worse. Have to wonder if there will ever be repercussions to what is being said on the internet. Openly bully someone on some online platform, and you can be slapped with charges. The precedent has already been made.
What's so hypocritical about it is how the rules are applied unevenly. Say something racist, sexist, or homophobic, and it will come back to haunt you. Run your mouth about Christians, Republicans, Conservatives, or Trump, and you will get a pat on the back.

He could have mentioned an appropriate location, like San Francisco, Key West, Austin or Asheville, but to waste a completely good shot for nothing... what a waste.

I've been called worse. But the line is completely inappropriate. Yeah, he should bear some consequence for using that kind of language at the workplace. But it should not ruin his career.
Make him sit through a week-long sensitivity training class taught by members of the LGBT-lmnopqrxstuvwxyz community. That would be torture!
