‘Giant Warning’: Iowa State University

An Iowa State University instructor’s syllabus warned students that anti-Black Lives Matter and pro-life viewpoints are “grounds for dismissal.” Instructor Chloe Clark’s English 250 syllabus includes a “giant warning” advising students that only certain views would be permitted during her classes. “I take this seriously,” she notes at the end of the warning. “Any instances of othering that you participate in intentionally (racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, sorophobia, transphobia, classism, mocking of mental health issues, body shaming, etc.) in class are grounds for dismissal from the classroom,” Clark wrote in the syllabus, a copy of which was provided to the Daily Caller News Foundation by the Young America’s Foundation (YAF).

For those wondering (like me) "sorophobia" apparently is a misspelling of "serophobia" which is a supposedly irrational fear of people with contagious diseases, primarily AIDS, I suspect. I'd could sit in the front row and hack up a lung from my allergies and tell her it's TB and Covid, just to see.

What the Iowa do any of those things have to do with learning English? Would sharing a desire that everybody in the country learn English be considered racism? If I were enrolled in that class, I'd be tempted to write in large red letters "This is Racist -- Your own Rule Dismisses You" across the syllabus in question, and hand it in on my way to the Registrar's Office to drop the class.

If a so called "instructor" at a major university can openly declare such bias, intolerance, dishonesty, and, frankly, stupidity, then the battle is almost lost before it begins. This imbecile must have been raised in a clogged toilet to get away with such outlandish moronic points in her class syllabus. And the university that supports and defends this idiocy is as useless as chop sticks in the soup line. Is it any wonder that the democrats are calling to defund the police while they also want the public to TURN IN THEIR GUNS to cut down on gun violence in the city (Philadelphia).

I am confused. I think gay men should have the same rights I do. If they want to marry a woman I'm cool with that if the woman is. At the same time I don't think I should be allowed to marry a man and I'd apply that same standard to a gay man. Where is the discrimination in that? Where is the "othering"? On the other hand I think a fetus has the same right to live that I do, but this professor seems to find that not merely odd but evil. She seems to be the one denying the "other" the same rights she would demand for herself.

If this isn't used in a campaign commercial......when you realize the current list only has certain views, but who's to say this list doesn't quickly grow into a larger list? FTA; Instructor Chloe Clark’s English 250 syllabus includes a “giant warning” advising students that --------- only certain views would be permitted during her classes. A new consideration should be "diversity of opinion and views" on college campuses, and ensure faculty, administration and staff reflect a broad, diverse group of ideas and opinions. My wife worked at a university for 30 years, and I attended a number of functions where the faculty, in particular, felt very comfortable spewing all sorts of hate with no one countering their comments.

#21, I have a view on the matter of tenure, please correct me if I missed something. As I understand tenure was implemented to allow the free discussion of what may be unpopular option within the context of rational learning. First, I am amazed I got that into a sentence. Next, Tenure was to expand the mind without fear. This person's grant of tenure does *not* allow her to *limit* the thoughts of her students. No. The exact opposite is the entire reason. Expand your knowledge without fear of reprisal. Someone missed the point. As to 'protection' I have just laid out the case to where this is not an item covered under the concept of tenure. I'd also like to ask, why is it English profs keep going off the deep end? Mizzu @Columbia loud moth 'beat these guys up'(BTW she is now teaching at Gonzaga in Washington State..keep an eye out for her), UNoDak English prof causing grief in a small campus, and now this example of no job market for English majors. I would like to note that all three of these examples happen to be born female. Don't know if it is relevant, but facts are facts.

How can one talk about monsters and isolating and controlling others without mentioning the tactics of the left? Black Lives Matter is nothing but a rhetoric of violence.... do as we say or we will burn, loot and commit violence against you. It's unbelievable that in a communications class taught to young impressionable minds only one viewpoint is acceptable. No other beliefs are tolerated, or you will fail the class.

Merriam-Webster's site says, "The use of other as a verb is rooted in sociology: to other a certain culture or individual is to treat that culture as fundamentally different from another class of individuals, often by emphasizing its apartness in traits that differ from one's own." As an English teacher, she must be aware of that definition, right? Since some cultures, not to mention individuals, are in fact fundamentally different from others [my Berkeley Anthropology degree allows me to claim that], where's the rub?! How is that 'embracing diversity'? Idiot.

The students should dismiss her on day one, and show her what it feels like to be in the out-group--that group that thinks it's entitled to tell others what they can and can't say. And notice how she didn't lose her job, imagine if a conservative did what she did.

Polyamory recently received two glowing write-ups in one of the world’s most influential newspapers: The New York Times. Two, eight days apart. Few can purchase the kind of puff. Polyamory is a wholly recent concept, the name chosen to communicate a person’s orientation for “many loves.” It is different than polygamy, which is technically polygyny, one man, many wives. Polyandry, one wife with many husbands, is nearly non-existent in human experience and thus, evidence that there are indeed distinct binary male/female natures that remain generally constant across cultures. Polyamorists are those of any number or sexuality involved in a shared sexual, romantic, or domestic relationship.

Fordham University is under investigation from the U.S. Department of Education for allegedly violating a student’s free speech after administrators called the cops on him for Instagram posts. On his personal account, Austin Tong posted pictures with a legally obtained gun and criticized China’s handling of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Tong also posted about the death of St. Louis Police Captain David Dorn, who died trying to stop rioters from looting a friend’s pawn shop. While the school’s website suggests that students enrolled at the university will have “the freedom of inquiry required by rigorous thinking and the quest for truth,” its reaction to Tong’s posts shows otherwise.

The water filter inside a household refrigerator is a simple device: a plastic tube packed with activated carbon. Nonetheless, replacement filters for certain GE refrigerators cost a stiff $55. And they need to be replaced every six months. So it’s no surprise that many GE fridge owners seek cheaper generic filters. These fit just fine. But when the owner presses the button to dispense water or ice, nothing comes out. The culprit is a bit of engineering almost as in-genious as it is infuriating. It seems that official GE replacement filters include a small RFID chip whose only purpose is to tell the refrigerator

The "We the People"-themed Democratic National Convention, like the Republican one to follow, shows us what America has known for years: that conventions are only infomercials designed to bend reality to political will. The Democrats bend their reality toward a referendum on President Donald Trump's handling of the coronavirus, but they bend it away from any mention of growing violence in American big cities run by liberal Democratic administrations. As I keep telling you, when you hear politicians talking, pay attention to what isn't said. Train your eye to see the negative space between the dancers, because that, too, is often the story. Urban violence threatens the peace of targeted Democratic suburban voters,

"Defunding the police puts the residents in danger and it invites lawlessness into our communities," Abbott said. Standing in a room in Philadelphia, with the words “Writing the Constitution” over his right shoulder, Obama gave a speech that almost wholly ignored Biden, whom he’d ostensibly come to praise. Instead, Obama viciously attacked Trump and did a constitutional rewrite that allowed him to cast Trump as a constitutional threat. From the start, Obama was up to his old tricks.
