I'm in the COVID vaccine trials

Original Article

I’ve been called an idiot and a traitor for this. An idiot for taking a small chance on a vaccine that looks very effective and safe in clinical trials so far, and a traitor for turning against some of my tribe who think the virus is a hoax. And then there’s the anti-vaxxers. My decision is mostly for selfish reasons. As a 64-year-old man in reasonable health, I’m tired of being locked down. I want to see my adult daughters and friends without them or me worrying that we’ll transmit the virus. I used to travel a lot and I want to be able to resume that legally and safely.

Comments:

Seems rational to me.

To each his own. Must have forgotten the earlier media blatherings that the virus is mutating. So a vaccine is just one finger in the dike.

I totally share his intense desire for a return to normalcy. I’m just not sure a vaccine, effective or not, is going to matter since this disease has become totally politicized and it’s usefulness in that regard is far from over.

Pfizer and Moderna are designed with the safest approach which uses mRNA to generate the antibodies rather than an actual virus (live or dead). With this approach its impossible to actually get COVID-19. Worse case he is protected from a non-existent SARS-COVID-2 variant but with the PLA you never know what they'll cook up next year. If the antibodies recognize the current virus he should be protected with very little risk. Most of the historic risk from viruses has been from allergies to the thimerosal or similar preservatives used to maintain good shelf life for viral vaccines. With the mRNA vaccines in the trial stage they may not be concerned with long shelf life so this is not a problem. I'm hoping that they have identified antibodies that attach to the more stable parts of the virus that don't evolve rapidly so that the vaccine provides longer lasting protection. Also, it would probably be unethical to actually challenge the trial patients with real virus so they may have to wait for them to get exposed naturally over time which may delay the reporting of results.

Seems Beaton is equating anti-vaxers with people like me who would get a shot, but I want to wait until a significant sample fares well or at least isn't harmed by long term effects.

I don't have a problem with vaccines. But I would never be part of a vaccine trial. Too many unknowns. He says he wanted to do this for all the positive reasons "IF" it works. And that is a big "IF". If it doesn't work, there could be massive side effects that could destroy his health and leave him an invalid the rest of his life. Hey, I'm glad he's doing it. Somebody has to . But his "holier than thou" attitude doesn't make him a very good roll model in this in my humble opinion.

Just my tin foil hat response: the Covid Virus is part of a family that includes the common cold. For over 50 years they have been trying to make a vaccine for the cold and yet not so pretty much have succeeded. This Covid 19 virus mutates fast enough that you can get sick over and over again and your immunity doesn't last very long either. I would recommend that anyone getting this vaccine read the 30 pages of ingredients that are in the shot and understand what they can do to you first.

I don’t take adult vaccines myself, but I will be happy to see a vaccine developed, and soon. Something needs to happen to get people over their unreasonable fears about this virus, and presenting facts to counter the current narrative does absolutely no good, whatsoever. Once people feel there is a vaccine to make the feel safe, perhaps they will take control of their lives back.

Well, it could end one of several ways. Some select individuals make billions off a vaccine that works. Some select individuals make billions off a vaccine that doesn't work (say, if Trump is re-elected). Some select individuals make billions off a vaccine that is partially effective. If SloJo is elected, expect mandatory vaccinations, or you won't even be able to get gas for your car. Time will tell.

People of my generation learned to read with Dr. Seuss. Sure, there were some child-like hijinks in the doctor’s prescriptions but to many toddlers the rhyme and rhythm were music to the ears, tonic to the souls and tutors to the unschooled. Mostly, they were exactly what Dr. Seuss intended them to be – entertaining, mischievous children’s literature. Dr. Seuss succeeded for nearly a century. In that time, millions of children learned to read and Dr. Seuss was awarded numerous prizes.

If you want to be part of Joe Biden’s administration, you need to be a “first.” I don’t mean “first” like first in your college graduation class. Heck, Biden himself was only in the top 50% of his law school class according to Biden and only in the top 85% according to the school records. No, not that kind of first. After all, this is a Democrat administration and so we’re not talking about dead white patriarchal European so-called merit. What we’re talking about is that you need to be a “first” in your skin color or sexuality.

The first vaccine against the Wuhan virus was developed by a German biotech company, BioNTech, in partnership with American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. So why is the vaccination rate in Germany stuck at 4% while the American vaccination rate is now quadruple that? Throughout Europe, it’s much the same story. The vaccination rate is 4% in France, Spain, Sweden and Italy, and 5% in Finland, Greece, Poland and Norway. Only the UK, now separate from the EU, is doing well with a vaccination rate of 27% after approving the vaccine weeks before the FDA did in the U.S.

The “Flynn Effect” is the phenomena identified by intelligence researcher James Flynn. He found that average intelligence quotients, or IQ’s, as measured by standardized tests were steadily increasing through the course of the 20th century. That sounds quite natural because, after all, each generation gets better nurturing. They get better health, improved medical care, more nutritious food and greater schooling. But IQ is supposed to be mainly about nature, not nurture. Nurturing can certainly affect a person’s well-being, but in theory it doesn’t change a person’s IQ much (except of course when the nurturing is so bad that it produces negative neurological effects).

Senator Ted Cruz noted that the Democrats’ latest impeachment of Donald Trump even though Mr. Trump has duly departed from the White House is, “like Shakespeare, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” Long-time NBC journalist Andrea Mitchell purported to correct Senator Cruz. On Twitter she sniped, “No, that’s Faulkner.” But of course, Cruz was right. It’s Shakespeare. Faulkner centuries later wrote a book entitled “The Sound and the Fury” which consciously and famously borrowed Shakespeare’s line, as every high schooler knows (or used to).

The bulk of seniors who are at risk from COVID have either died of the disease, survived the disease or been vaccinated against the disease. New cases are dropping quickly. Over ten percent of the overall American population has been vaccinated – over 40 million of them – and that figure is increasing at the rate of about 11 million a week. It looks like nearly everyone who wants to be vaccinated will be vaccinated by late spring. Meanwhile, drug treatments have proved increasingly effective. Most recently, the FDA approved a drug cocktail from Eli Lilly. There will come a time when COVID masks are no longer necessary.

Elon Musk wants to go to Mars. More precisely, he wants you or me to go. It’s a bad idea. Apart from provisioning and energy problems that are potentially solvable, there are three big problems with a Mars mission: Getting there, getting back and being there. All three problems center around an insolvable radiation problem. Molten material under the earth’s mantle slowly circles a solid iron core. This produces a dynamo effect generating an electrical current and a corresponding magnetic field. This magnetic field is well known, and is the basis for the simple magnetic compass that has been used for centuries.

Suppose you’re a die-hard Democrat. What do you do about such issues as: Transgenderism in women’s sports. Do you side with persons having male chromosomes but identify as women – who happen to be overwhelmingly Democrats – when they want to compete in sports against women? Or do you side with genetic women – who are also predominately Democrats – who are concerned that subjecting genetic women to competition from persons who’ve spent most of their lives developing height, girth and muscle mass as a man with male chromosomes and testosterone levels will destroy women’s sports?

Regular Beatniks know that since last summer I’ve been enrolled in the clinical trials for the Pfizer COVID vaccine. Because it’s a “blinded” study, I never really knew whether I’d received the vaccine or a placebo. The clinic called me last week to tell me that Pfizer was unblinding the study for people in my demographic (translation: old farts) if we wished. Moreover, Pfizer was offering to administer the vaccine to those whom the unblinding revealed had received the placebo. I accepted Pfizer’s offer. They then told me I’d received the placebo.

Although they aren’t exactly scientists, the media said that COVID vaccines would take years or even decades to develop and test and that they would probably be only about 50-60% effective. It’s not clear whether the media really believed their own dire predictions, or whether they were just rooting for the virus because they thought it hurt Trump and hurt America, both of which they like to see hurt. Although (or perhaps because) they’re not scientists and not very smart, they are Democrats after all.

As we reported two days ago, Joe Biden completely made no sense when he was trying to explain the Wuhan coronavirus relief bill. It was really bad and it explains why they’re afraid to have him deliver an address to Congress or do any kind of a real solo press conference, because at this point they have to be afraid this is all going to fall apart if he does anything live and this all becomes too obvious to the American people. I’m probably second to none in my dislike for Meghan Markle. There’s something unattractive about a mature woman marrying into the British Royal family with one of the world’s most expensive weddings, hanging out with the Queen, living in insane luxury…and then whining non-stop about the horror of her life. There’s something even less appealing when that woman accuses the Royal family of race hatred. And the problem is that, when it comes to that left-wing diva, Meghan Markle, it’s hard to believe most of what she says. After weeks of hype, CBS finally televised Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah.
