Berkeley, California has approved a plan that prohibits police officers from conducting traffics stops. The plan, proposed by the mayor and approved in a virtual city council meeting early Wednesday morning, is just one part of a major "defund the police" overhaul planned by the city, Fox News reported.
The move to separate traffic enforcement from police work is believed to be the first of its kind in the U.S, according to the report. Instead of having trained officers conducting traffic stops, the new policy will send in unarmed civilian city workers to deal with traffic offenders.

Will traffic citations issued by unarmed civilian city officials be worth the paper they are written on?

Can't wait to see the video of the 1st person to receive a civilian ticket, wad it up and toss it back at the issuer. Will they get their plate number and send the police to their home to arrest them?

The second most dangerous thing that police do is traffic stops. Should be interesting when a civilian stops an MS-13 drug smuggler.

Under who's controlling authority will anyone in Berkeley be pulled over for any traffic violation then?
How about those police chases? Presuming they can't happen either, huh?
Expect speeding and traffic light violations to increase in Berkeley.

Good luck with that. I'm sure those unarmed bureaucrats just can't wait to go out and pretend to be police.

As a deputy sheriff in rural Louisiana years ago, every traffic stop after dark was conducted with my holster unsnapped. In two cases that I can recall, it was necessary for me to draw my pistol. Fortunately, in neither case were shots fired.
Where do they plan to find these sitting ducks to conduct traffic stops? Where do they find replacements for the ones who are killed or damaged during their stops? What could possibly go wrong with this plan?
Where does Kalifornicate find these idiot politicians?

I recommend that city council members who voted for this volunteer to be the unarmed civilians who do this. Furthermore, I can't imagine any union representing public workers in California would support this for their own members, even if they support this in the abstract. The teachers unions here don't want to go back to work because they might catch the flu.

at least 20% of altercations, felony arrests and recovered gun situations I was involved in were a result of a traffic stop. Not to mention 100% of dui's that resulted in pursuits and/or altercations.
It's final folks, dems have lost their minds.
I'm not even sure it's legal for a civilian to issue traffic citations.

There won’t be very many traffic stops because non-law abiding people who the civilian traffic monitors want to stop, simply will not stop.
The reason that the leftist activists do not want police officers to be able to make contact with people after traffic stops is because that’s how the police identify and arrest a lot of people who have outstanding warrants, or detect people who are high on alcohol or illicit drugs, and when it comes to the Black population, it is a safe bet that a good portion of who are violent and have absolutely no self restraint are just about always going to physically resist the police that is always the genius for bad things happening. Especially if they are on some sort of probation or parole after some previous convictions and know that they could get sent back to prison.

What could possible go WRONG with this??
Can you picture a traffic enforcement officer trying to pursue a speeding car in his/her little putt-putt meter enforcement vehicle?? And just wait until the first (unarmed) traffic enforcement officer is gunned down during a traffic stop.
This is more evidence that liberalism is a severe mental condition.

These 'civilians' will have the authority of the police if they are allowed to stop traffic. The mayor and city council are REPLACING the police. God knows with what. Whoever they are, they will not be civilians. Who is going to be in charge of hiring? What criteria will they use in hiring? The mayor and city council are hardcore lefties. Will this new police force be hardcore lefties? What rule of law will they be following? Agree that this won't end well.

arrest authority is grounded in most societies. what kind of arrest authority will the non police have? Will they have special cars? Uniforms?
Aren't we really talking about police officers without firearms?
