Members of the Minneapolis City Council on Sunday announced plans to disband their embattled police department in the wake of worldwide protests over the killing of George Floyd at the hands of cops. The nine councilmembers, who form a veto-proof majority, committed to de-funding the department and moving toward a community-based public safety model during a rally at the city’s Powderhorn Park, local reports said. “It is clear that our system of policing is not keeping our communities safe,” said council president Lisa Bender, according to Fox9. “Our efforts at incremental reform have failed, period.” “It’s our commitment to end policing

I'll bet experienced law enforcement candidates will be lining up to apply for those positions. (NOT). Instead they'll get a covey of unemployed and otherwise unemployable social science graduates. It's a better gig than pulling shots at Starbucks or drawing craft beers and wiping tables. Imagine a "holistic public safety department" with the likes of Occasio-Cortez or any mainstream media news reader.
Popcorn at the ready.

Just build a wall around the entire city because nobody is going to want to go there, and nobody will want what comes out of there.
How can people be so stupid? Maybe Trump can win Minn. after all in November - after they see what anarchy one of their major cities descends into when the left gets their way.

If they do actually abolish the police department and fire all the current and experienced officers, the law of the jungle will prevail in Minneapolis, and a lot of people and whatever businesses are left following the rioting will move away and they will lose their tax base. That will happen almost immediately if without a police force the law of the jungle comes into vogue in that leftist and liberal Democrat City, and nobody there can get any commercial or homeowners insurance to protect their assets and property.
So chances are what will happen will be another leftist and liberal Democrat bait and switch move on the low information “communities” there, with the name of the Police Department being changed to something like “The Flower Child Community Response Team” with outlawed choke holds, and with the leftist politicians then moving on until the next pretext occurs.

#7 I live in the city limits of Minneapolis. Your attempt to be funny makes me want to puke. There are normal people who live in this city who are terrified about this disaster. Move? Who would want to buy a house here? My family and I are discussing what are options are - or if there are any options.
This was once a beautiful city. Two weeks ago no one could have ever seen this coming. Laughing and blaming the victims isn't helping. The only people laughing are you and the fools in Powderhorn Park with their "Abolish the Police" signs.

"Social workers or medics could respond to situations once handled by police..."
So, for a report of a wife beating, they will just send a medic to patch her up? Actually, that should work well with Sharia Law wife beatings, but the male medic had better not touch the wife in the course of treatment or he will get beheaded and the wife will be stoned to death. In which case, they will send out a social worker to help the children deal with the trauma of community-based public safety .

I cannot fathom how this new "holistic safety department" will respond to actual, real world calls. Will they even bother gathering evidence or chasing down the bad guys? Will they attempt to "counsel" armed crazies on meth who are threatening to kill their families or hostages? What the [bleep] is this all about? These people are bonkers! #24, I really do hope that you have some firearms and some skills with them. If not, you really need to fix that. Guns are currently in short supply already, thid will make it far more difficult to find something to buy, and ammo.
If 911 won't answer, you are your own security.
Best wishes.

To ALL Minneapolis residents: STAY THERE. Do not move out and inflict you incredible stupidity on any other area of the country, unless you want to go to NYC - the vast majority of New Yorkers are obviously as stupid as you are. Those of us who live in parts of the country that as yet have not descended to your level of insanity DO NOT WANT YOU HERE. When your city falls off the cliff into chaos, run by gangs and brown-shirts, keep repeating to yourselves 'I voted for this! I deserve this! This is Utopia!' Above all, stay there; you voted for this bed of insanity, now you must lie in it.

I had friends in Detroit in the late 1960s. After the riots they joined a neighborhood watch and patrolled their block in shifts all night, every night, carrying firearms. When arriving home after work, they circled the block several times in their car to check for lurkers nearby their house, then pulled into their attached garage, staying alert and closing the garage door again before exiting the car with gun drawn and carefully entering their home.
At least they did have the option of calling the police if they saw suspicious lurkers (but this was before the era of cellphones).
Homes were worth only a small fraction of what they were selling for before the riots, if they could find a buyer at all.
A real nightmare for them.

#24 I agree. This is nothing to joke about, especially with all of the Muzlims living in MN. People can't just pack up and move. Homes will become as worthless as Detroit. To think any elected official would disband the police dept is insane.
If all of the insurance companies in Minneapolis pick up and move, a lot of tax revenue follows.
