A Memorial Day rally calling for an end to the Illinois stay-at-home order was broken up early by Chicago Police. Organizers on Monday gathered at Buckingham Fountain, calling the order to fight the coronavirus pandemic unconstitutional and demanding a reopening.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Chicago Police both said they respect First Amendment rights, but the rally posed a public health risk.
The mayor tweeted “Regarding today’s large unpermitted gathering at Millennium Park: while we respect 1st amendment rights, this gathering posed an unacceptable health risk and was dispersed. No matter where in the city you live, no one is exempt from @GovPritzker’s stay-at-home order.”

Where do the concepts "the right of free assembly" & "the right to petition the government" stand in Chicago and Illinois? I am hoping that some legal organization will take up the cases of those citizens who have been harmed by this unconstitutional maneuver and take the state & the mayor to SCOTUS!

The Chicago voters should give Lightfoot the ''Hotfoot'' and send her packing! She has caused too much harm to the city.

I'm surprised they didn't use rubber shotgun shells, teargas, firehoses, and tazers to break up the peaceful large unpermitted gathering and protest which posed an unacceptable health risk to the political future of the Chicago and Illinois politicians running things.

The mayor is not a "lightfoot." She is a heavy fist.

'no one is exempt from gov. Pritzker's stay at home order'!! Really??? Exception being the gov's wife flying to Florida or to Wisc. where they are building a new home. Or the 'mayor' who can have her hair done but not the rest of the people! What morons in this state voted this trash into office??? Rise up and disregard their stupid 'orders' unless they lock themselves in as well. Come to think of it put them in a small holding cell and carry on. Around Christmas give them some water and food. They will have slimmed down and will look much better!

After reading #3 - I did a search for "Chicago shooting this weekend." The real eye-opener was why the headlines seemed to not get the numbers correct. 6 dead 30 shot, 10 dead, 40 shot, 11 dead, 48 shot. I thought well that escalated fast. Until I realized they were headlines from different weekends.

It's time to force the hand of those elected officials who are actively denying the rights of citizens that are enshrined in our Constitution, which does not contain a "Wuhan clause" that puts the Bill of Rights on hold by progressive/media decree, as they blow right past the limits set on government by the same Constitution that even progressives office-holders have sworn to uphold. Any state's use of force to deny the most basic rights of its citizens should be met with force by those citizens and citizens of every state.

no they don't. The worst thing is the police, who should be refusing to obey these orders they know to be unconstitutional, are enforcing them. I find it hard to trust any police now.

Same template for the 1st Amendment as is used for the 2nd Amendment.
Anytime someone, anyone, starts out with 'I support the 1St ( or the 2nd ) Amendment B U T ...............................................
stop listening, they just lied to you with the first part of their statement !!!!
They can't arrest everyone. They're outnumbered by far and someday they may find out suddenly and perhaps even violently just how
outnumbered and inferior they really are. Just sayin'.

I don't see how the breakup of people protesting their government is legal. I hope the authorities that are doing this are sued for it.

So THAT's where all the cops were that should have been policing the 'Hood where the shootings happened.
Much easier to push around old, law-abiding people than a bunch of vicious young thugs.
Note NO mention of 'ethnicity' of all those murdered, or who was suspected of shooting each one.
My home in semi-rural Mississippi looks better and better each day.

There were more people in the parks than at this rally but oh no, must not protest Pritzker and Lightfoot's orders.
