Stockpile of expired masks likely to be given

A stockpile of 1.5 million expired N95 respirator masks belonging to the US Customs and Border Protection agency is expected to be deployed to the Transportation Security Administration to aid its underequipped workforce, a report said. Officials with the Department of Homeland Security decided to deliver the supply of protective masks to the TSA on a Wednesday conference call, sources told The Washington Post. The masks have been sitting inside an Indiana warehouse, the report said. While they are past their expiration date, a White House official told the paper that they still function properly. “The masks are fully capable,” the official said.

Better than nothing, especially if they are still good.

If properly stored, of course they are OK. The feds insist on an expiration date on the items. Rubbing alcohol has an expiration date thanks to the FDA. Yup. Rubbing alcohol.

Many things have an "expiration date" only to make you buy another one. This is part of the reason hospitals don't have a stockpile - if they "expire" on the shelf then they are trash. Instead they use a "just in time" system to order them. Except now there is a run on them.

So many perfectly good items with an expiration date are thrown away. It's a damned shame. IMO a 4x4 in a sealed container with an expired date is good for years past the expiration date. It's a waste to just toss these types of things because of a date on the package. I have a store close to me that buys expired bacon and other things and sells it for about half what it sells for in the stores. It hasn't killed me yet

My barber's wife is a TSA agent at the local airport. The N95 masks they have expired in 2004. Did you hear that? 2004! Now if OSHA comes to my factory, and OSHA sees expired product, we are in for FINES. But our own government can't keep current products!!! "Do as I say, not as I do." That said, the masks themselves are fine. The part that could degrade, so says the Feds to the barber's wife, is the elastic strap. Like underwear that won't stay up!!! LOL

12, Lots of things have expiration dates that are still perfectly fine many years later. What in a mask would expire exactly? Activated charcoal? Does activated charcoal expire if it is kept sealed? From a Google search - 'As long as it is kept air tight and dry, there is no expiration date. Some companies use expiration dates to rotate stock, but that is just for inventory purposes, '

"Expired"? The paper part, unless they got wet, should last decades and decades. Perhaps eventually the rubber straps may lose their stretch.

After 9/11 there was much talk of the “death of irony,” along with calls for mandatory national service and widespread support for the idea that it was time to put away childish things. Then Rudy Giuliani went on “Saturday Night Live,” Lorne Michaels asked him, “Can we be funny?” And Giuliani said, “Why start now?” The relief-laugh that followed this impeccably delivered punchline set the stage for a return to normalcy. We could be silly again. We all went to see “Zoolander.” The coronavirus has already caused far more disruption than 9/11, and figures to take far more lives, albeit in slo-mo rather than on one fireball-strewn morning.

Let us review exactly what has happened in this country over the past two months, vis-a-vis the coronavirus pandemic. On January 29, President Donald Trump created a White House Coronavirus Task Force to coordinate the federal government's response to the virus outbreak and to keep the American people as informed about it as possible.
