Top New Jersey health official Judith Persichilli
says everyone will get coronavirus

New Jersey’s top public health official says everyone, including her, will eventually contract the coronavirus. “I’m definitely going to get it. We all are,” Judith Persichilli told NJ.com. “I’m just waiting.”  Persichilli, 71, is a member of the age demographic for which the virus is most deadly. Nevertheless, she said she believed the odds were still on her side and she would most likely have a mild form of the illness.   Persichilli has become a near-household name in the Garden State in recent weeks with regular press conferences where she reads the latest figures of coronavirus infections and deaths.

Comments:

If we are all going to get it, then why all of these precautions? It's spitting into the wind!

Perschilli is your basic RN turned administrative/political hack (MA) who has cycled though exec positions in multiple hospitals. She is no scientist, nor AP nurse, nor a doctor. So if this is true, why isolate in this "martial law lite" that her boss Murphy has imposed?

The Diamond Princess event proves this wrong. Only 17% of the people on the ship contracted the illness. Even if you take into account that at some point exposure became far more limited, one would assume most of the people on the ship came in contact with the illness at some point and yet only 17% contracted it and of those people 52% showed no sign of disease at all. And this ship's population is heavily weighted toward seniors as the average age was in the 60's.

#2 is correct. Why are we shutting down the whole state if the vast majority are going to get it anyway. Looking at stats from CDC 80% of people show no symptoms and the 20% with symptoms only a few need special care. The influenza this year has affected more people and killed many more than cv19 yet no panic on this. Let’s get back to work.

As a doctor at Johns Hopkins Hospital told me over a week ago, most people may have already exposed to this virus, and didn't even notice it. They may have had a runny nose, watery eyes, and a cough, but just thought it was allergies. It's been a warm winter here in the Mid Atlantic region, and grass, trees, and other plants started blooming earlier than usual.

This virus is either turning people into idiots or exposing idiots. Or both. Why is this situation causing people who should know better, people who are in positions of authority and have a duty to the people, to say and do such idiotic things. This is a huge lie from this woman. If she doesn’t have the virus, stays home and doesn’t have contact with other people, she will not get the virus. No other virus in recorded history has behaved in the manner that these people are claiming this one will. This virus is not behaving the way they are claiming it will. This is pure lunacy.

Many people are going to get it. Some will become seriously ill and require hospitalization and some a ventilator. Some will infect medical personnel. Right now the hospitals are fairly full with people with the seasonal flu. A number of them need ventilators. If the government can slow the spread they have time to figure out which drugs and treatments work and companies can produce large quantities of the required drugs. With more time the seasonal flu will recede and more hospital resources (ventilators and staff )will be available to treat the Wuhan China plague. With a slower spread hospital workers will be infected at a lower rate and may have effective treatments available so the can get back to work to treat the seriously ill. It is not clear a all that "everyone is going to get it" but it is clear it has spread very quickly, easily and widely in China, Italy and Spain and at a rate that has or is going to overwhelm the medical resources available. Then people die in the hallways of hospitals waiting for treatment when they could have been saved. In short, slower spread means more time to figure out treatments, produce drugs, means more resources will be available for the critically ill and many more will be saved. If it goes dormant and comes roaring back next winter there may be both drugs and vaccines to kill it. It is not the black plague or smallpox, but it might be the Spanish flu. Slowing the spread may be the difference between a 3 or 4 % death rate and a .3 % or lower one. If you are one of the people who become seriously ill that will matter to you.

Bret Stephens: Hi, Gail. I don’t think there’s much doubt among reasonably sane people about what happened at the Capitol on Jan. 6. Do we really need a House committee to investigate it? Gail Collins: Well gee, Bret. Right after the debacle, there seemed to be a brief bipartisan desire to revisit the whole disaster and examine the details. But the Republican mood flipped and Kevin McCarthy, the House minority leader, suddenly decided Congress couldn’t investigate the root causes of the assault on the nation’s Capitol unless it also looked into … Black Lives Matter?

Nancy Pelosi used to point her angry finger at Donald Trump, but she leaves him for dust when it comes to busting norms, dividing Congress and causing mayhem. If anyone is to blame for the hyper-partisanship in Washington these days, it’s the spiteful House speaker. She behaves more like a Mafia don waging a gang war than a dignified, fair and honest presiding officer, which is what the speaker’s role requires. Pelosi abuses her power in ways that once were unthinkable. Her speakership has been the antithesis of Lincoln’s entreaty to “the better angels of our nature.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief medical advisor to the Biden administration, has defended the National Institute of Health's decision to give $600,000 to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in 2014 for research into whether bat coronaviruses could be transmitted to humans. In Sunday's episode of CNN's 'State of the Union,' Fauci, the director of the NIH's Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told host Jake Tapper that it would be 'negligent' not to fund the research - though some have argued it could have led to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in 2019. Fauci and Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul feuded over the subject last week, when Paul questioned Fauci

For many decades, the quadrennial Olympic games were grand moments of patriotism. (snip) Of late, though, our athletes are no longer amateurs; the Soviets are gone; we worship at the Chinese shrine; the Olympics are on every two years and broadcast 24/7, making for complete over-saturation; and too many of our Olympic athletes hate the country they’re representing. For that reason, those Americans who love their country the most have cared the least when Americans have fallen flat in Tokyo.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci said federal health officials are considering recommending that fully vaccinated people wear masks in public again. “This is under active consideration,” Fauci told CNN in response to a question about whether masks should be used again despite individuals’ COVID-19 vaccination status. Fauci, who serves as President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, added, “If we don’t vaccinate people, the model is going to predict that we’re going to be in trouble as we continue to get more and more cases.”

The ancient Greeks, whose admonitions seem evergreen, warned us that excess pride and ambition would lead those guilty of it to ruin. I think that it true of Anthony Fauci. (Snip) Playing politics with public health -- as Biden, Harris and Fauci have -- did more to undermine confidence in our public health apparatus and functionaries than any social media “misinformation,” “misinformation” which, in any event, often turns out to be as true, as was Trump’s claim the virus was created in the Wuhan lab.

A lifelong baseball fan, I abandoned the game this year after MLB sided with the Democratic Party in its campaign against ballot integrity in Georgia. It wasn’t just that: my home town team has put a “Black Lives Matter” sign and a memorial to George Floyd in right field. If I can’t escape politics at a baseball game, I’d rather go somewhere else. For the first time in decades, I haven’t seen a major league baseball game this year. Not only that, I haven’t watched or listened to a single pitch on radio or television. Then there is football. Commissioner Roger Goodell is driving the sport in a “woke” direction.
