Kenny Rogers, a longtime star of country music, died Friday night, according to a statement posted by his family. He was 81.
Known for such hits as “The Gambler,” “Lady,” “Islands in the Stream,” and “Lucille,” Rogers died peacefully at home in Sandy Springs, Ga., of natural causes at 10:25 p.m., the statement said.
Rogers later developed "The Gambler" into a series of television movies in which he starred.
In all, Rogers had 24 No. 1 hits and was the winner of six CMA Awards and three Grammys, the family's statement said.

Wow! Where have the years gone? It was only recently, he was on T.V., with the “First Edition!”

Great body of work. R.I.P. "Eyes That See In The Dark" was one of my favorites. He had a number of successful collaborations with the BeeGees.

Rogers also tried his hand in a franchise. I really enjoyed Kenny Rogers Roasters when they were around.

Great video on YouTube showing his first appearance with the first Edition and retirement appearance with Dolly. Unless you're hoarding Kleenex, too- you might want to have one handy.
Also, ( I had forgotten that he was with the New Christy Minstrels prior to the 1st Edition).

You've got to know when to hold'em.
Know when to fold'em.
Know when to walk away.
Know when to run.
Classic.

Saw the new christy Minstrels at the NYS Fair, 1966, or so. they were excellent.
Kenny rogers was a true performer - and his Kenny rogers chicken was featured in a seinfeld episode... and it was funny.

This is sad. I loved all of his songs, but my favorite is Islands in the Stream with Dolly Parton.

#17, I had not heard "Harder Cards" before, went and listened to it after your comment. Thanks.
I have a number of police officer friends, some for over 30 years, and have heard some stories and done a couple of very educational ride-alongs. Good song, no doubt.

this makes me especially sad. Kenny and his First Edition, was the first group we booked into our new "supper club" in Columbus,Ohio in 1965..We just owned the building and leased it, did not have anything with the bookings..but my Dad was very hands on with the building and knew the Lessee's well.. Needless to say, they were a huge hit....and came back several more times after they had gotten..big..just great people..and Thelma Comancho was the most beautiful creature I have even seen!! Kenny sat my toddler son on his lap..and let him "drive" a car around the parking lot after they were done rehearsing..they were all just lovely people. Now Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponys
is another matter..on stage swilling from a bottle of Southern Comfort. told her stop, she didn't and yanked her physically off the stage and kicked her out..should have known she was a lib!!! Rest In Peace, Kenny..you were one of the good guys!!

He was one of the last great unabashedly "men" singers. This in contrast to today's generation who sound like whiny little boys and fear sounding "too masculine" and offending females intimidated by "maleness."
Where are this generation's singers like Eddie Arnold, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Rich, etc.? Non-existent.
