Our concern about Donald Trump in the campaign of 2016 was not about his personal morals. ...
It feels increasingly like Americans are watching execution of a plan to take down America as a constitutional republic, and Trump as president, fed by a CIA-type psychological assessment of Trump that bet on his ‘go big’ instincts that are untethered by a deep ideological understanding and appreciation for what truly makes America exceptional and great.

Never underestimate the power of the media over the herd. Never attribute good intentions to the media. Never trust anything you hear on NPR. That's a good start.

I am skeptical Trump is being played. I am a medical professional and the stories I’m hearing from colleagues in New York, New Orleans and Seattle paint a grim picture. Though it’s not that bad yet in my city (southeast United States), in my clinic, I’m fortunate to be able to do phone consults only for the time being so my personal risk is low.

I am a physician in Chicago and only hear rumors of devastation. No one has actually seen it.
A colleague recently told me Hinsdale Hospital was getting crushed and desperate. Their actual number of cases...... 5.

Are Trump and his supporters being played? Please dont forget that, if true huge swaths of liberal supporters are also being played and have been for decades. The issue is not whether we're being played, but what are we going to do about it?
It's looking more and more likely, that we, the played, have become aware of it, and will eventually exterminate the players as they deserve.
They are creating a panic, through the media hype, that just may come back to bloodily bite them.

Beware misinformation, lies, and propaganda from deep state sources. If they think they are playing President Trump, we will give them an additional four years to do so, come November!
The democrats, RINOs and deep state people still think President Trump is a rube, since he isn't part of their ''club.'' They get increasingly angry and frustrated because they don't understand why he keeps winning.

I notice our blue state governors are wasting no time unleashing their inner fascist with draconian limits on people’s lives. I also notice a difference in how people are reacting to this virus, along ideological lines. Those I know on the left are much more willing to accept and integrate the government’s mandates, and shame those who don’t.

This author puts into words the somewhat vague dis-ease I have with this seemingly over-reaction to an ill-defined and poorly quantified problem. Trump is a great cheerleader for our nation and I adore much of what he is done.
He has been under siege and criminally attacked every day of his presidency. Now he has a chance to do something BIGLY to protect the country. Is this his most vulnerable point?
I sure don't know the whole truth but I am deeply skeptical of the need to put the country into economic meltdown. We must continue to pray for God's protection of President Trump, and for His blessing on our beloved nation.

Last night on the news, it was reported that in New York City, one person per hour is dying of corona virus. 46 people in total have died of corona virus in New York City. Are they only counting that last 46 hours? Besides that, 9 people normally die per hour in New York City.

The pandemic is real. But the hype is all that our media knows how to so anymore. Yes, we are being played but without control of the MSM anything seen as less than 'all out war' will hurt us come November. It is better to be seen running to the side of the boy crying 'wolf' than to not. Remember - WE are not the one's causing the hype.

Always looking over his shoulder. I don't think he can be had. The writer's concern is understandable but my real worry is - what happens after Trump?

I agree with #12. I can only hope that this article finds its way to the President. The available statistics on the disease don’t match the hype. Yes we can pull through this, but we can’t do it if we are under government mandate not to work. Killing the economy will kill more people than the virus and leave us more susceptible to it and future viruses and other adversities that come along. Not to mention the damage being done to our constitutional rights.

President Trump puts tariffs on China. China unleashes virus on the world and destroys US stock market and economy. Biden gets elected in 2020. Godless Chinese communists laugh all the way to the bank as Biden removes tariffs and gives them back "most favored nation" status.

Afterward, when the disease-caused devastation is found to be minimal, those who are fine with all this shutdown emergency stuff will point to it as the reason it wasn't worse. (How much Katrina political action and media coverage turned out to be true and honest?)
Let's start with the "death toll"...we KNOW the largest percentage of deaths is among those elderly and suffering underlying conditions. Today they die from their COVID infection? Or was it merely a matter of time from those other causes? No one is out calling to bring out the dead.
The Grand Princess cruise ship quarantine offers an interesting model. Isolated, full of "elderly" passengers, minimal medical resources, further quarantined after landing...and to date one 71-year-old man dead.
Make of all this what one will. Except for a nursing home in Washington, there has been no significant outbreak anywhere in the USA. Of course, it's all due to the safeguards and civic spirit we're experiencing. Or not. But it's ironic that those who proclaim regularly a distrust of media and government will take all this at face value. Is the illness a plot? No, no reason to think so. Is the political/social reaction that drove people to buy out stocks of TP and otherwise hoard canned goods and ammo while their IRA/401(k) balances were savaged? Few are allowing this crisis to be wasted...and there will be others coming along the way right up to November. Make of them what you will.

Well, #19, Huncher Biden has to make a living.
It does seem that if it is a planned operation, the chinese would have to be involved. But can they survive economic devastation of their customers? Of course, they are prepared to use much more draconian methods to control an unemployed population.
I was with my doctor yesterday for a regularly scheduled appointment and he seemed quite concerned about the epidemic. I didn’t cross examine him.

I can't help but think that this is spot on. Or it is wild conspiracy stuff. At this point, I simply don't know. Like much of the public I am erring on the side of caution. But, I can't stop thinking that we are in fact being played for a much bigger reason. My wife closed her daycare yesterday that she has been doing for 30 years. Was it a good decision, or panic? These are really strange and screwed up times for many of us.

A very well written article expressing concerns about our republic and the use of emergency powers that some think benign, that will set precedents for leaders that follow maybe not so benign. One size fits all edicts from DC do not fit the diversity of America. Many communities are already socially distant, and local authorities understand the situation better. Americans are capable of understanding and doing what is necessary, without the edicts. We have seen the orders, but the creativity of American has not yet been unleashed as to how to deal with, and work around it. I hope more ideas emerge as how to get the work done, and maintain safety, as the days pass.

There may be some merit here. This CCP flu pandemic has created the opportunity for the left to wreck the economy by causing spiking unemployment and businesses to fail by means of forced closure orders. The blame for it all will be laid at Trump's feet for his "lying, bumbling, clueless" response to this crisis. Memories are short and if people are still hurting in November (as one would assume the left hopes and plans) then some number will vote for anyone who is not Trump—even that idiot Biden.

Think we are all looking at this and are asking ourselves what is going on.
The death toll for the United States is currently at 276. The United States has a population of 328 million.
its an election year. Every politician has to be out in front of this. Not doing so is a good way to lose an election. i remember when Obama appeared with Chris Christie in New jersey after hurricane Sandy (?). There was a story that a quarter of the people that voted for Obama based their vote on how he handled the hurricane.
All I know is the Democrats seem to be getting a lot of what they wanted, and our government's reaction is not sustainable.

Yes #17. The left worldwide hates America. The left worldwide hates Trump and people like Trump. They are full of hatred for freedom and goodness and they will stop at nothing. Communism has killed millions upon millions in the last 100 years alone. One cannot deny the horrific modern history of leftists’ unhinged effort to crush freedom and individualism. So yes. They will do whatever it takes.

We don’t know yet, do we? In that respect we will have to wait until Summer for that to become self-evident. It’s the old story, we don't know what we don’t know, but you can’t put anything past the leftist and liberal Democrats and their under the covers supporters, in their quest for political power.

From the get go, I've viewed this whole virus thing as an attempt to remove Trump from office. The timing of this thing is just too perfect, and China is behind the whole thing. Notice the virus didn't appear not long after the trade deal was signed, and Trump started doing victory laps about it. The Chinese then released news they were evacuating entire cities because of this virus. Mind you, to the Chinese government, losing several thousand citizens is a drop in the bucket, but the news they were evacuating millions of people because of a virus would get international attention, and make this virus look like a global killer. Their goal was to crush the global economy, there by ruining the stock market, and remove the one huge accomplishment Trump has done thus ruining Trump's chance for reelection. Trump's America first agenda is not in line with China's global goal of being the only super power on earth. China would kill or let die millions of it's own citizens to reach that goal. At this point, something like 250,000 people on earth have the virus. The population of the earth is over 7 billion. Hardly a pandemic. More people had the flu this year in the U.S. Shutting down the economies of western nations who are dependent on Chinese made goods over this is an over reaction that will be studied by academics and military planners for decades to come.

Screwtape would make much of our actions, reactions, and interactions on how we're responding to this test from the Enemy, both in how we're living our lives during War as well as in how we're addressing our fellow Patients. Ultimately, we will recover.

Overreact versus underreact is a question that was raised.
I did some number crunching, using CDC site data for this morning. Engineers, bored at home.....can't help ourselves. Numbers are our fascination.
Deaths per 100,000 population: USA/ 0.10; Italy/6.7; Spain/2.9; Iran/1.85; Germany/0.09; France/0.7; S. Korea/0.2; UK/0.3; Switzerland/0.65; Netherlands/0.8; Belgium/0.6; Austria/0.09
Austria, Germany and the USA are outstanding at this point in time. S. Korea, UK, France, Switzerlan and Belgium pretty good. Iran is doing a lot worse, as is Spain, and Italy is doing terribly.
Some of this is policy, like how soon did borders get shut down. Some is how early they are in the course of the pandemic. Some is number of Chinese in your country. Some is health care quality. Some is 'national norms of hygiene'. Some is age distribution. Lots of factors.

The press has been trying to make this Trump's Katrina, but the statistics do not support that storyline. We had 80,000 U.S. deaths from H1N1 and we did not shut down the country. More than 50,000 automobile deaths each year could be prevented by "social distancing." and "sheltering in place," but no one would imagine going back to living in caves to avoid the risks of living in a modern industrial world. When we get through this, and we will, Trump hopefully will not be remembered for killing the patient to cure the illness. Herbert Hoover could tell him a lot about being on watch at the front end of a Great Depression,

After reading many of the posts here, I am certain of one thing. Many good folk here are now deciding to believe the media and give up their rights and freedoms. The death toll from "regular yearly flu" this season is over 20,000 deaths. I do not know the exact number on the Chinese flu but the last I heard was around 200 or so. Each and every year in America around 20k people die from complications involving the flu, I repeat, every year. I am shocked that so many good folk believe what their politicians are spewing. Home of the Brave? Not so much.

There were 39,404 deaths in auto accidents last year, and, according to CDC, 12,469 deaths in the United States attributed to H1N1 during that epidemic (2009-2010). Oddly, H1N1 had a greater effect on those UNDER 65 than the elderly.
