The brutal killing of three American women and six children a week ago in Mexico sparked outrage on both sides of the border. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has promised justice, and already set up a special task force to find the attackers. President Donald J. Trump, meanwhile, has suggested American troops be sent in to combat the rising tide of violence. Rhetoric aside, some important facts remain in doubt, with social media and tabloids generating increasingly bizarre conspiracy theories. The day after the killing, the New York Post, for instance, reported that members of the victims’ community may have been recruited

Bottomline. In my opinion they were sending a message to the U.S. With Trump in office, he has put a knife in the drug cartels profits with the wall and increased presences of military and law enforcement. Those same cartels have also branched out throughout the U.S. You can thank the left leaning Republicans, the democrats, Clinton, Bush and Obama for what is happening in the U.S. concerning violence and drugs.

Could be. Might be. My 2 cents is that their water hogging harmed the area much more than any drug activity and the gringos were not playing nice by damming it all up on their ranches. Who in their right mind sends out unarmed women and children on a long journey by car in Mexico? This is certainly a tragedy but a private dispute and a crime and not worth sending US troops.

One might be given to wonder that if the slaughter of women and children (infants, in fact) is not reason for our rulers to take action against the killers then just what is?

When you lie to me about something I care about my response is to seek an explanation that follows the Occam's razor simplicity model to putting the puzzle pieces together. The initial lie is the seed of theory, conspiracy theory if you prefer that term.
My BS alarm spit out the initial mistaken identity story triggering the thought process.
I'm now integrating the attempts to make the victims less sympathetic characters by interjecting the irrelevant which I see serving the purpose of deflating our enthusiasm to respond to this attack. That tells me responding to the attack is more likely appropriate than I had previously suspected.
That leads me to something bigger than just a local thing which by itself would not seem to merit US intervention.
I could just be over thinking which I am prone to do, but when I'm lied to I seek an understanding of why I am being manipulated.

Why the heck else would they be down there except to practice polygamy and why in the heck would you pick a fight with drug lords over anything. Seems to me they brought this on themselves and were let down by their leadership. Fools.

These people who were unfortunately killed were as negligent of their children's lives as the people who transport their children one thousand miles to steal across the boarder. They put their children's lives in danger so they can live their FLDS lifestyle.

Why a group of Americans would decide to settle in Mexico in full view of the local border scum defies explanation, anyway. The previous skirmishes the Americans had with the neighboring farmers over land and water rights is suspect. Local resentment over a group of white Americans who were exuding a "we're Mormon so we're better than you" schtick may be another reason. However, if/when we start to witness similar ambushes on anybody on the US side of the border, it will be crystal clear what is going on.
As #1 points out, Trump's border security measures have affected cartel profits and this attack may be a prelude to a larger counteroffensive. Bottom line - there is only one group in Mexico that would have no problem sending a message by murdering American women and children - the cartels.
If the cartels were behind this, there will never be an "official" Mexican Government determination of what happened and why because the government officials want to stay alive.

Through family sources and knowing the bad history of the LeBarons vs the cartel, I believe the gun men knew very well there were women and children in those vans. It was not mistaken identity.

Those children were innocent victims and many of you are blaming them. Shame on you. I do have a suggestion for the polygamist Le Barons. Just come home. In our permissive.gender fluid, anything goes society it should be OK to declare yourselves roommates and get on with your lives.

There is no reason for any sentient U.S. citizen to go to Mexico. That should be a starting point for any discussion

You people see numbers worse than this in the innocent people killed on the streets of Chicago every month and nobody blinks an eye over it. Just because it happened in Mexico makes no difference. Innocent people were shot by criminals. Period.

So the bottom line is that these Mormons fled the restrictions of law and order in the U.S. and went where there is none. Anyone who goes to Mexico is taking a big risk.

It is interesting the Mexican campesinos say they were “defending the environment”. Prepare for more this side of the border.

A lot of speculation that points in numerous directions, but nothing conclusive. It sounds like an all around bad neighborhood.

I don't read the Daily Beast, so I'll just give you my take.
Consider the possibility that none of the cartels want to see a strong, successful AMLO presidency. And with USMCA Mexico would be well on the way to becoming a modern industrial economy where Mexicans have choices and opportunity and the ability to feed their families without turning to illegal means offered by the cartels. In addition, a strong relationship between AMLO and PDJT can have nothing but bad results for the cartels and their lawless businesses.
So given their outlaw culture and the only tools they have at hand, they massacre Americans in Mexico to try to bait the US into a military response and derail everything. It is not terribly different from the continuous attempts to bait America into sending military into the Middle East (pick a country, or group, they all try it the same). Yeah, it's not how any of us would approach it. But they don't think like we do.

Let's get down to basics. It was done to send a message. Get out and stay out. Whatever the big family was involved in apparently turned bad. The men of the family could have double-crossed the cartel in some way that was serious enough to get their women and kids killed as punishment. How many times do we see these similar kinds of things in Hollywood movies? The basics are all there. In time the real underlying story will come out and I am sure it will be even more shocking.
