The University of Virginia canceled the 21-gun salute portion of its annual Veterans Day ceremony – citing gun violence. James Ryan, the university’s president, posted a statement on Facebook explaining that there were concerns about firing weapons on school property in light of recent school shootings. He said there were two specific reasons. "First, to minimize disruptions to classes, given that this event is located at the juncture of four primary academic buildings and is held at a time that classes are in session; and second, recognizing concerns related to firing weapons on the Grounds in light of gun violence

I could not call the U*niversity of Virginia 'elite.'
After all, Dead Ted Kennedy attended U VA, after being kicked out of Harvard for cheating on a a Latin test.. (Dead Ted should have said, 'mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maximum culpa, but since he didn't know Latin, he could not utter those words.)
Translation for you people - through my fault, through my fault, through my grieveous fault.

FTA:The blowback was apparently so significant – that President Ryan promised to re-introduce the 21-gun salute next year. The notion that students might suffer some sort of disruption because the ROTC is honoring our veterans is repulsive.
I'm glad they got severe blowback. So sick of some ignorant snowflake derailing an honorable tradition.

Today’s snowflakes could never have prevailed over the Third Reich ... they would have joined forces with Neville Chamberlain and marched for peace wearing pussyhats. America’s adversaries now know that just being patient enough to allow snowflakes to prevail here will allow them to be the victor in any future confrontation. And when fools elect fools, the party is over.

If It wasn’t for gun violence, these little snowflakes would be speaking German. Have they ever in their entire lives attended a history class? Morons.

When I was young, Vermont was an independent conservative beautiful place. It's still beautiful. When I moved to Virginia, it was an independent conservative beautiful place. It is still beautiful also, and other than the northeastern armpit, is still conservative.

Well finally we have taken the necessary step to keep our inner city youths from shooting each other and the random seven year old who wanders into the cross fire. Heck this could even cause the drug cartels to lay down their firearms and fight their turf wars with rubber bands and water balloons.

Side note. 21-gun salutes are reserved for Presidents, visiting heads of state, and Memorial Day observations of the fallen. Veterans deserve thanks and maybe a gun salute - but not 21.

They fire 3 volleys, and often the firing party consists of seven firers, causing the uninformed to do math ("Oh, no! I was told there would be no math!") to come up with 21 guns. Heaven forfend they would hear the Salute to the Union when 50 rounds are fired!

Does that mean that if someone had a really powerful stereo system and played the sounds of gunfire a high volume they could cause a total panic on campus? The cannon fire in the 1812 overture? Oh dear. I hope they all stay out of south Chicago.

The University of Virginia, once an elite public institution, has fallen to this. It's cowardly president is unfit to lead anything, much less a major university.
