When I was a kid, I collected baseball cards. I grew up in an isolated and not especially large town, but it did have one comic book and baseball card shop that I spent a lot of time in, salivating over the Mark McGwire rookie card in the display case. I couldn’t afford it — it was worth maybe $5 at the time — so I would usually just buy a pack of Topps or Donruss cards for 50 cents and hope I got lucky in what I found. Obviously, I didn’t get as lucky finding the cards for my favorite players as I would have liked.

FTA: Whether it’s federal judges issuing dubious national injunctions against his immigration policy or holding impeachment proceedings that don’t follow basic precedents, Trump’s opponents often only end up exposing how creaky and, frankly, dangerous the machinery of government has become.

Great article. I love the term 'regulative fiction' - as a description of the fake narrative given to us by the media & the politicians. President Trump has pulled back the curtain on the government corruption. He has refused to go along with the fake narrative on 'how Washington works'. He is like a bull in a china shop and the china is all fake.

So, is the best we can expect if Trump wins in 2020 is more doubling down on impeachment, new technology deep fake videos of Trump murdering two year old black kids and a news media and Democrat party saying it's all true, knowing full well that it is not yet taking actions against Trump based on the deep fake with the GOP falling down, rolling over, soiling themselves and giving full credibility to what they too know is a lie? That's a little more than regulative fiction, just like the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax, Balsey-Ford hoax, Ukraine phone call hoax, Orange Man bad meme hoax is quite a bit more than yet another one thousand word description of the obvious. "Regulative fiction;" nice replacement words for strong delusion and lies. I feel so much better now while the lies and delusion keep getting worse as we afterburn towards Gomorrah.

Sorry, this doesn't resonate with me. It's a "Trump is kinda OK but has a lot of problems but his opponents are worse" article.
Here's a news flash. This is a political WAR. Wars are not all neat and planned. Wars make a lot of mess and break things. First, this war is necessary because "the machinery of government has become creaky and, frankly, dangerous". It is also been made clear that the bureaucratic government has decided IT is in charge, no matter who the voters elect. Thus you have Comey, Brennan, Clapper, Holder, Lynch, Yates, their minions, the toadies in the State Department and the EPA and the Department of Educations and the IRS and, frankly, all over the place. As Trump has Constitutionally implied, "I am the BOSS!", their response has been anger that those who "resist" are being sidelined. This is a clarion call! This attitude MUST be eradicated from the bureaucracy. If you are not willing to follow the ELECTED political leadership, you have NO PLACE in the government.
Second, when the enemy is strong and entrenched, simple, predictable methods of overcoming them will not work. You need to go big to win. The results will also have some level of unpredictability. You may claim victory but have quite a mess to clean up. The cleanup may be as hard as the original war and if you are not careful, your original purpose can get perverted.
Trump is fighting and winning the war and frankly, making a lot less mess than might be expected. I worry if the rest of our elected "Representatives" are up to the challenge of rebuilding and restructuring to prevent a quick recurrence of what was happening?

I don't know of a person who would say that Trump is perfect... except maybe in his execution of policy, legislation, things like getting the wall built... but can anyone deny that the Donks have had major moral, ethical and legal issues that got papered over. Before it was obvious that Biden was milking his position for ... hahaha, emoluments and bribes laundered thru kin, Limbaugh was gleeful that the human gaffe machine would be Veep. And he was/is the gaffe machine. But did anyone hear that, see that, in the 8 years of his veepocity? Trips to pedophile island, personal-hackable servers (and over 200 NOCs in China being outed and killed), and, yes, pallets of cash are not, we are assured, the moral failings that a bad tweet, a spare bad nick-name, or a 10 year old tape with the p-word are.
Enough.

Mark misses the prospect of extreme Antifa-led violence and terrorist attacks. America's societal future is heading toward a civil conflict that will settle the"regulative fiction". There's a big difference between these. The heart of the matter is that the corrupt DC way of doing things has been and still is under assault by a President who aims to stop it in its tracks.

They hate him because he has done more for the country than all of them combined. This shows how lazy, self-serving, and worthless most of them are.

The sad truth is that thanks to the MSM and Dims, Washington DC lies about everything. We here have known this for years, as has Donald Trump.
Thank God he has the mettle to take charge and make changes to benefit America and our fundamental Constitutional principles.

The reason why the Washington establishment lies about President Trump is because they can and because they've gotten away with it for decades...not anymore.
Like other great Presidents before him President Trump is an original through and through. The only thing he's beholden to are the American people. He's an outsider who made it big in business and on network TV. They also despise him because he's exposing them for the filthy bottom feeders they are and the organized crime syndicate located they've created in the nations Capital. President Trump is not okay, he's one in a million.

Agree with #4. And I stopped reading when he began quoting David Brooks.

I wasn't too pleased with the whole tone of the piece, and when I reached this line:
"In a vacuum, perhaps what Trump did with Ukraine smells of impropriety and judged by the standards set by George Washington would be impeachable."
I just stopped wasting my time. Anyone who can actually believe that line of total bull hockey, without any basis in fact, is too deeply immersed in the evil slime that is DC and has lost their bearings, seriously.
There was NOTHING even slightly out of line with the Ukraine call. Nothing at all. That Mr. Hemingway thinks that somehow it "smells of improptiety" tells us more about Mr. Hemingway's apparently moderate TDS than it does about anything actually done by the President.
Nothing to be learned from continuing to read this piece.

Washington has taught the electorate to expect glacial slowness in every action EXCEPT when they are pushing a Socialist or Communist agenda. Then they move with lightning speed (as in the case of Obamacare!). Now, the Democratic Party who have rented out the House Chamber in OUR capital, have decided to pursue this Impeachment Kabuki Theater over CHRISTmas holidays. No melting glacier there. Just a jet blower having at the iceberg they propose.
If tonight is the first time you pray for your president, you are almost 3 years too late getting started. Every prayer will be heard so play catch up.

Republican/Patriots move slow. Democrats move fast without logic reasoning or planning. We have to pass it before we can read it. We have to impeach before we figure out why. We have to convict before we prove the crime or even decide on which crime.
Patriots meditate, pray, and hold sacred the process by which the independence was won, the constitution forged, and the sacredness of individual freedom and liberty in any prosecutorial process. Our enemies use that reverence against us.
