The bell in the Independence Hall tower rang at 9 a.m., and Mark Sanford took a deep breath. He grabbed a giant check for “one trillion dollars,” stood next to a tiny wooden lectern, and asked me if I was ready for him to kick off a news conference announcing his bid to challenge President Donald Trump in the 2020 Republican primary. It didn’t really feel like a news conference. I was the only reporter there.

Comments:

It must be realllllyyy lonely on the Appalachian Trail . . .

If you read the article through, Sanford actually sounds reasonable and realistic. Why he doesn't face reality now and simply admit the truth that he's a relic and irrelevant? At least he didn't break out in a song this time.

Potomac fever is a terrible thing. Unelected and untreated you become an embarrassment to family and friends and ultimately die a pitiful figure known only in the footnotes of a few forgotten doctoral theses. Compared to Mark Sanford, Harold Stassen was a giant.

At least he’s got heart. I take exception to the statement that Trump is “obsessed” with crowd sizes. Of course he’s delighted with seeing a huge crowd at every rally; why not? What does that reporter expect?

Talk about a rampant ego!!!!!!!! Where does this man come off thinking he can run for President after the stunts he has pulled and the people he has damaged, especially his ex wife and children, not to mention his constituents. He is ALMOST at the Eric Swawell level, but not close. (Watched Martha McCallum try to deal with his idiot last night on The Story and,........! I wondered why they continue to put this fool on t.v., and then realized it is because he is SO dumb SO bad!

This is vintage Hunter Thompson material. “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.” That quote was apropos of Nixon but Sanford recaptures the ineffable cluelessness of post-Watergate RMN. I am not familiar with Anna Orso but she’s showing some solid gonzo instincts by covering a politician as patently insane as Mark Sanford. Keep up the good work, Anna! Thompson’s death left a giant hole in political reporting that has never been filled.

Mark is from here. He has clearly stated on talk radio shows he knows he is not gonna win and he just wants to bring attention to the deficit. We think it is a rather dumb way of going about it but, whatever floats his boat.

My Uber driver a few mornings ago didn’t mind the relatively short ride we embarked on. “Every trip counts,” he said, “no one is more or less important than the other.” (snip)Every person has a story that can help others . . . I think that’s the power of the new movie Unplanned. It’s the story of a woman, Abby Johnson, and her desire to help women, to have a purpose, to do something good with her life. She believed she was doing that when she worked at a Planned Parenthood clinic, but realized the horrors of the abortion industry and resigned to become a pro-life activist.

Planned Parenthood has long proclaimed itself to be a pro-woman medical provider of comprehensive health care services to women . . . Such self-righteous congratulatory proclamations have been partially unmasked. In recent years, Planned Parenthood has been exposed for what it truly is – the world’s largest provider and promoter of abortion, for which it receives millions of tax-payer dollars.

First it was deplorables, now it’s Nazis. Hillary Clinton offered a sharp rebuke of former President Trump’s most recent campaign event in Ohio, saying it reminded her of a Nazi rally. “I remember as a young student, you know, trying to figure out, how people get basically drawn in by Hitler. How did that happen? I’d watch newsreels and I’d see this guy standing up there ranting and raving, and people shouting and raising their arms. I thought, ‘What’s happened to these people?'” Clinton said Friday at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.

Prince Harry has launched a last-minute bid to tone down his bombshell autobiography amid fears his final draft 'might not go down too well' in the wake of the Queen's death, The Mail on Sunday can reveal. The memoirs had been signed off ready for an expected autumn release, but the Duke – who is writing the book as part of a near £40 million three-title deal – has asked to make some significant alterations. His request may be seen as a sign that he is ready to take a more conciliatory approach to the rest of the Royal Family, but could cause problems for his publishers.

How quickly we have gotten there under Biden, where law enforcement is politicized. Kyle Seraphin told podcaster and radio host Dan Bongino over a bombshell, two-part interview that agents are routinely directed to spy on Americans with little or no basis, the bureau’s management ranks are hopelessly politicized by inexperienced corporate climbers, and that hundreds of experienced agents are staying on despite their disgust simply to collect their pensions.

On reading about the Saturday arrest of pro-life activist Mark Houck, I thought the author at this alternative site had to be exaggerating. It struck me as beyond belief that two dozen or so armed FBI agents would swarm the house of a Catholic father of seven, rifles drawn, and arrest him in front of his weeping children for anything short of murder. I have had to recalibrate my belief system. The “crime” fell quite a bit short of murder. (snip) As has become much too obvious, only one side of the abortion debate has been awarded federal protection.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday he wants almost $300 million in federal funding to fight “rainbow fentanyl”—highly-addictive pills that look like candy and could have a devastating effect on young people. The $290 million in funds would be used to sustain 61 Overdose Response Strategy teams that would help try to curb fentanyl, including the new “rainbow” kind, the New York Democrat said at a press conference. “This is fentanyl, this is a Sweetart—you tell me the difference,” Schumer said while holding up pictures of both the deadly pills and the tangy sweets. “Halloween is coming up… this is really worrisome and really dangerous.”
