The estate of musical legend Prince is objecting to President Donald Trump's use of a Prince song before a campaign rally in Minneapolis Thursday night.
The Trump campaign played Prince's "Purple Rain" as the audience at the rally waited for the president to begin speaking.
Prince's estate released a statement after the rally saying it "will never give permission to President Trump to use Prince's songs."

Stadiums and arenas have their own lists that they own.
Pres Trump picks songs from off those lists, plus he has a few favs he pays to play, if necessary.
Most artists know this.
Apparently "estates" of dead artists are not as smart.

Anytime these artists become indignant at someone using their music, I want to laugh in their face. You all have only your greed, and that of your unions, to thank for the situation that allows that to happen. Tough toenails. You can object all you want to. You signed a contract to extort money from the general public, not only when they buy your music, but anytime your music is played in a public setting. (I’m sure you’ll get around to privately played, as soon as you can figure out how to make that happen, as well.) Once someone pays for the rights, they can use your music. End of story. I have NO sympathy for these people.

Well, I don't like Prince. Sounds like sour purple rain grapes to me.

There are plenty of other very famous musicians that are more than happy and willing to let trump use their songs for free. I bet country stars like Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, and many others would step up in a country heartbeat. All he would have to do is put out the word and ask.

Donald Trump did not play that song, it was the band contracted by the Trump Campaign. Chances are Trump himself never heard the music.

This is just a purple fog in a teapot. I would love to see the Actual Writ, or a Stop and Desist Order. Bet there ain't one, but more liberal lip flapping.

Not Tim McGraw, #6. He and wife Faith Hill fundraise for Democrats. They were big Hillary supporters also.

How does the estate of Prince know what he'd say? He's dead.

Purple Rain is a horrible tune anyway. Maybe Trump should play Chocolate Rain, its a horrible tune but maybe not as bad as Purple Rain.

I don't think artist s really own the rights to their songs,I think the publisher does.
The Trump people I am sure paid royalties for the use.

Prince Estate: you ignorant fools. The music is for sale in the public domain. Once a customer has paid for it, they can use it as you wish. Once a customer has purchased it, you no longer own it, Prince Estate. I hope this helps you understand, Prince estate, but I doubt you are capable of overcoming your ignorance.

I recall that Rush had a similar problem regarding his theme song, My City Is Gone by The Pretenders. If I remember it right, money solved the problem.

Arenas and auditoriums usually have a blanket license, usually BMI/ASCAP to play any music publicly. The artist has no control over who can and cannot play their music once it's licensed for public performance.

That song is available for purchase by anyone. This thing comes up often, where a lib artist "demands" that a conservative stop using their song for campaigning. Their demands are impotent and they know it, but the media likes to play it up as if it's a real threat of some kind.
But this time it's NOT the artist, it's the people who control the estate. It takes real big brass balls to claim what a dead person would think about someone they never met in life.

Personally I think he should play the theme from High Noon. He is definitely Gary Cooper come to town to clean up the mess. And Melania makes a nice Grace Kelly too. The movie won 7 academy awards way back when Hollywood was making great movies instead of the filth productions they are swamping us with now.
