Fifty years ago tonight, followers of Charles Manson murdered actress Sharon Tate, her unborn child, Jay Sebring (hairstylist to Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Jim Morrison, and other stars), coffee heiress Abigail Folger, her boyfriend and director Roman Polanski’s boyhood friend Wojciech Frykowski, and 18-year-old Steven Parent, who unfortunately visited the property’s caretaker to examine a radio for sale at the wrong time. Street urchins killed beautiful people and then delivered an encore to their ugly performance later that weekend at the home of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. I had friends who lived behind the house where this happened. Fortunately, they were gone at the time. When they got back, though, there were signs that someone had tried to break into their home. The “what-if” is chilling!

I recently refreshed my memory about the Tate-LaBianca murders. Good to not forget the depths to which human depravity can delve when self becomes god. It's also good to remember those who made excuses for and even those who reveled and wished to emulate Manson and his terror. Manson truly was the perfected product of the 60's.

I was 15 and living in the San Fernando Valley with my family. Dad was a WWII vet and LA cop and even he was rattled. In the summer we used to sleep with our front and back doors open with just the screen doors locked (no AC). That stopped, and never resumed, in the summer of '69. Everyone was scared and on edge. I read "Helter Skelter" as soon as it came out, along with the rest of LA. I was familiar with all the places The Family frequented; the movie ranch and the eastern side of the Sierras. The scariest part was learning about their "creepy-crawly" expeditions where they would enter houses at night and crawl through while the families slept...all in the Valley. The trial played out on the nightly news on the TV in the kitchen while we ate dinner. My memories of that time are surreal. I had already experienced the assignations of JFK, RFK and MLK, but my personal introduction to the horrific scope of human evil was from Charlie Manson. God bless Debra Tate for dedicating her life to make sure non of these cold-blooded murderers ever get out of prison. However, there is a tale of redemption. One of our parish priests once did prison ministry and knew Tex Watson, who has become a Christian and evangelizes his other prisoners. He accepts responsibility for his actions and preaches the Redemption of Christ. Last I heard, he has never petitioned for parole.

I read some other blog where the poster was a kid shooting birds or bottles up in the nearby hills, they get chased by the cops and hide in a cave where a bunch of hippie chicks were hanging out. He said they were nice and everything but guess who they were?

If you haven't read "Helter Skelter" you should. It's hard for normal people to believe the depravity some humans(?) can sink to. But maybe it can help one understand the type of thinking/acting that can lead to mass killings, whether shooting, bombing or any other way. And "progressives" want us to give up our guns!

They were all over the west, the first LSD into Mendocino County was through them (and an unsolved homicide at the same time) as the passed through, they also lived in the caves in Shoshone (Southern edge of Death Valley)

#6, I read Helter Skelter when it was first published. I was in college at the time. It was, without a doubt, the scariest book I’ve ever read and I used to read a lot of Steven King before he went left-wing wacko. Fiction horror writers have got nothing on Charles Manson.

Manson found his Shadow and kept it as his reality. Same as these mass killers this past weekend. Same as what Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn described in the Gulag Archipelago.

What I can't forget is that some of the rabid clan got released from jail early so they could become professors to school young minds on how to go about what they did and cover it up better..so much for pretend life sentences.

Our thinking this week, amid all the carnage and grief and finger-pointing, has been in part on Beto O’Rourke, the presidential candidate from El Paso, where 22 people were killed last Saturday. Our sympathy is devoted to the dead and their families, of course — but Beto has been on our minds, too. We keep coming back to a moment last Sunday when, for a few seconds, all the pretenses that are part of running for president in our age of constant exposure were peeled back, if only briefly. There are times, it seems, in most presidential campaigns when the facades get stripped away like so many layers of paint.

Joe Biden possesses the elixir of ordinariness, despite the appearance of having picked his hair and teeth out of a catalog. One of the traits of ordinariness is inconsistency. Another is hypocrisy. These are pardonable flaws among the ordinary, but we expect our leaders to at least remember their lines. Biden’s performance this week shows why he might win the Democratic nomination, but still lose the 2020 election. On Wednesday, Biden and Cory Booker attended Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, to launch an opportunist attack on Donald Trump for, in Biden’s words, ‘fanning the flames of white supremacy’. On Thursday, after Elizabeth Warren and Beto O’Rourke

The Trump administration asked a federal panel to revoke the exclusive right of a public sector union to represent immigration judges in collective bargaining Friday. The union, the National Association of Immigration Judges (NAIJ), has been at odds with the administration over substantive policy directives and the independence of the immigration courts. Federal law defines management officials as “any individual employed by an agency in a position the duties and responsibilities of which require or authorize the individual to formulate, determine, or influence the policies of the agency.”

Rep. Joaquin Castro learned a very important life lesson the other day. It turns out the gun-toting, Bible-clinging Trump supporters in San Antonio don’t take kindly to a politician who disrespects their brisket. Castro, D-Texas, recently published a list of President Trump's top San Antonio donors. He also doxed their places of employment. “Their contributions are fueling a campaign of hate that labels Hispanic immigrants as ‘invaders’,” Castro wrote on Twitter.

There was a secret meeting at a sidewalk cafe near the National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden, a meeting that seemed coincidental, almost an accident, just two old friends running into each other on a warm summer day. One of the men was Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, the other was an emissary from the White House. Kennedy, 82, was determined to personally carry a message to the president without it being leaked. A day or two later, an armored car took him to the White House, where he told President Donald Trump that he was retiring. Ultimately, all hell broke loose. After open carry went into effect in Texas on January 1, some businesses were inconvenienced by the size of the signs they had to put up, and other businesses were inconvenienced by the fact that they were forced to choose a side in a culture war when they mostly just wanted to sell hamburgers. But one corporation decided to punt the inconvenience over to a particular subset: its store employees. At Walmart, the official company policy regarding open carry is that customers are allowed to bring visible handguns into the store, but that store staff are responsible for verifying that the customer has a proper license for the weapon.

August 10, 1969: SAN CLEMENTE, Calif.—President Nixon accused his predecessor Lyndon Baines Johnson of complicity in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Speaking with reporters on the first day of a 10-day stay at his Pacific Ocean vacation home …. Of course, that never happened. Obviously. How could it, how dare it? But had it happened, such an accusation—by a president, against a former president—would have convulsed the United States and the world. Today, President Trump accused his predecessor, Bill Clinton—or possibly his 2016 campaign opponent, former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton—of complicity in the death of the accused sex-trafficker, Jeffrey Epstein.
