Despite endless gun violence reports put forward by the establishment media, the dirty little secret is firearm homicides have plummeted over the past 25 years. Yet most Americans, particularly Democrats, believe firearm murders have risen period. Washington Post analysis shows Democrats, followed closely by independents, are more apt to believe firearm murders have increased. And this feeds the Democrat psyche which is already more prone to support an expansion of gun control laws. But the reality is that the high water mark for firearm murders was 1994 while 2017, the most recent year with complete data on incidents, shows a sharp drop. There were “16,136 [firearm murders]

Concealed carry is a significant part of this. John Lott's book, More Guns, Less Crime compares county by county before and after CCW legislation, each county compared to itself, and shows conclusively that rape, murder and other violent crimes drop dramatically when CCW laws come into being. The antigun left went hysterical when the book came out, they made all sorts of claims against him and his methodology. But none of their hysteria had an basis in fact, and his work has never been refuted by any legitimate work, although he and his book are regularly smeared. The facts are there.
There are added demographic reasons, too. And there are still high crime local areas, largely with the expected high concentrations of violent demographic subgroups. And frequently there are areas where people are not permitted, by law, to be armed to defend themselves.

Take out the gangbangers in Chicago and the number would fall even more.

Yes, I did know this. From the early 1990s violent crime has been dropping across-the-board. Yet, the democrats are bad-mouthing the bi-partisan effort of increased policing, modernization of police departments, and truth-in-sentencing/three-strikes you're out rules as being "racist" and "mass incarceration". I can't help but suspect that they have ulterior motives in wanting to reverse these trends. More criminals on the streets will mean increased crime which would give them more excuses to implement gun control laws. Their true motive for gun control laws is controlling the population, not preventing crime.

#7's post is interesting. Linked to that page is this graph showing murders by country. The highest 10% or so are the countries from which we are seeing the highest numbers of Illegal Democrats.
Hope for the best - prepare for the worst

Much/most of what ordinary Americans "know" about violent crime and guns is wrong, propaganda from the Enemedia.
Mr. Lott's crime research site has a lot of good info for those who are interested. I met him and we had a few drinks some years ago, and discussed his book and his background. A very smart and interesting guy. At that time he had just come out with his first book on gun control, and was under furious, angry personal attack by the anti-gun folks. He was genuinely surprised at the vitriol about what he considered to be just another research project. He was not funded by NRA or anyone else in the gun control movement, was not a gun owner, or NRA member and was an economics professor looking for good research projects for grad students to teach them proper statistical research methodologies. He discovered that the field was rife with intentionally misleading "research" work, and has taken up the gauntlet to get out the facts.
